  1. Yeah, he killed himself. Considering the content of most of his stories it's not very surprising, he was deeply haunted. I suppose that's often the case with good writers. I don't really see how brief interviews could be made into a movie. At least a decent one.
  2. Gotta give DFW some credit for his short stories though, some of them are real hard hitters. Good Old Neon is a great one and the brief interviews from 'Brief Interviews With Hideous Men' are very good, especially the final one. I think the only book that's really exhausted me, meaning I fell asleep numerous times while reading it, was Walden. I did finish it though.
  3. Hopefully, it seems like this week is going to be make or break for them. It sucks that the Michigan/Michigan State game this weekend is only airing on Big Ten Network. Wanted to watch that, it should be a good indicator of how the rest of the Wolverines' season is going to pan out.
  4. http://esl.about.com/od/grammarintermediate/a/cm_your.htm Hate to be a grammar nazi but this is annoying and it just makes you sound even more ignorant. Also, insulting people really doesn't prove any points. You don't have to come in here guns (and shitty grammar) blazing.
  5. fuck ohio state. Can't say much about the Cal/Oregon game except Oregon came to play and Cal didn't...anyway I'll be satisfied as long as USC doesn't come back to win the Pac-10.
  6. Oregon looked shitty against Utah even though they won. Fumble city. Cal's gonna stuff the run and intercept Masoli a bunch of times while Best does his impression of a rhinoceros on PCP escaping from the zoo.
  7. I assume you're talking about The Brothers Karamazov. I read it probably 7 years ago, when I was younger and more impressionable, and it was the first Dostoevsky novel I picked up as well. That said, it was the scope of his vision as a writer, the depth of his understanding of human psychology, and his deep knowledge of myriad timeless religious/philosophical questions that moved me so much. There is also a major character, Ivan Karamazov, who I felt I could really relate to. It's hard to explain why I liked that book so much in just a few sentences, his achievement really is massive; there's a fairly literal reason why he's known as a "giant" of literature. Read it, it may seem slow at the start but once you get into the meat of the novel you won't want to put it down. It's a very profound book, and in my opinion (as well as many critics) it's his best.
  8. His books have their flaws, but I get a lot out of them. The Brothers Karamazov might be the best novel I've ever read, Crime and Punishment definitely earns its status as a classic, and The Idiot really struck a chord with me, to the point that I actually went back after a few years and read it again. His books can drag on in places and they can take like 150 pages just to get into at the beginning, but he's for sure one of my favorite writers.
  9. Riley did fine today but...one man offense right here.
  10. One of my favorites from Bukowski. Just started this beast:
  11. Somebody needs to hit that big blue wall with some gigantic black and white straight-letters...or silvers.
  12. Yeah, just hope they don't come out flat again this time. Also I think the CAL student discount only applies to season tickets..I know plenty of students & faculty though so I'm hoping to find someone with season tickets who's going out of town the weekend of the USC game or something. That Boise St. vs. Fresno St. game was great.
  13. What? You just took that sentence out of context. Obama says, right in that quote, that he "made the decision to bar these practices." He then says that he is "absolutely convinced" that the best way to keep the country safe is to "make sure that we are not taking short cuts that undermine who we are," i.e. to make sure we do not use torture. Reasonably clear language there. I don't really see anything between the lines suggesting otherwise.

  17. Yeah I'm debating getting a ticket to the Cal/USC game. Problem is I don't think I know anyone who else wants to drop $100+ for that, and I know the price is only gonna go up as they both keep winning. I better just hide under a bridge on campus on game day and jack some unsuspecting USC fans...
  18. As much as I hate USC, i'm still glad they beat ohio state...also USC looked very beatable which bodes well for Cal in October. I'm glad Michigan pulled it off, I think we're looking at a 5-0 or maybe even 7-0 start. I don't want to get ahead of myself but much bigger things could even be in store, looks like Rich Rod finally found a quarterback and got his system running.
  19. OK...the point is that you, casek, and the person who wrote the article casek posted are all buying into an extreme misinterpretation of what this guy Holdren is about. I'm not being skeptical so much as pointing out the abundantly clear fact that this is just anti-Obama propaganda. Look at the other shit the author of that article has written. And before you accuse me, I'm not a rabid obama-phile. This just seems obvious to me. It's hard to know what to say to people who spin the facts this much. Also, overpopulation is widely considered to be the root cause of the Rwandan genocide. Something to think about for those who don't believe overpopulation is a problem...
  20. The holy shai-hulud is right. I didn't know there were so many Fremen on 12oz. /yesnerd
  21. Yeah I think I can get free tickets for E. Washington too. Don't know if I really want to go. Won't have to worry about Cal coming out all sluggish this year, none of that east-coast morning game bullshit. Best is gonna run right through them. I know it's early in the season but I'd like to see a Cal-Ohio State rose bowl...with Cal kicking the shit out of them.
