  1. Well, after countless mechanicals and DNF's, I finally got something to show: took the W at tonight's cross race (!) Now upgrading to A's and gonna get schooled by the pro's... good stuff.
  2. SHIT. Sounds like my broken hand story - didn't find out for 5 days later. You raced on a fucking broken wrist eh? Gnarly! Get well soon - you may have a chance to snag some late season racing if it heals up in time. Ninkrossi was cool, although "flat" and "smooth" apparently was code word for "not flat" and "not smooth". I knew my bike was in trouble because the shift cable was nearly blown, but salvaged it via last minute tune-ups... still, by the 2nd lap my shifting was totally fucked and I decided to cut losses, save some for PIR (a good decision evidently) and call it a day, having already had my entry fee waived via volunteering. Course was cool but I HATED that fucking N: (12oz. dudes- this photo is deceptive: it's taken atop a hill and kind of obscures the steepness that that N is built on.) Sounds like you have the same last number as me - 1, hence the back row call up. If I didn't have callup points for PIR I probably would have just spent the day heckling FPDX riders. But you know what last row back week means: first row this week at Hillsboro. So I'll probably just take my upgrade and do my first A's race with a start line advantage, and find out what it's like riding in the same row as Molly Cameron and the other hot shots.
  3. joker how'd your race go? i got 2nd place out of a B field just shy of 100 people! still hungry victory before upgrading to A's though.
  4. Ugh, the lack of knowledge on this page... First off, you don't weld lugged steel, you braze it. Secondly, I can tell you just by looking at the bottom bracket juncture that your bike was a low-end mass produced frame from the 70's. Consider it as good as totaled, because the cost of repair and repaint is going to vastly exceed the market value of a similar steel frame from the same era that actually fits you. Unless you have some kind of sentiment attached to what's essentially a 40 year old department store bike, count your losses and move on. The good news is, unless you're riding dirt jumps and DH, the bike is likely to just suffer a slow death as opposed to catastrophically failing on you. I wouldn't necessarily recommend riding it indefinitely, but it's probably not going to explode on you mid commute.
  5. choc & soup, you guys tried out cross yet? looks like i'm gonna be in your neck of the woods for SSCXWC at GGP this year. also, joker - you been racing the wednesday night alpenrose series? watch out - we've been getting slashed tires left and right, including the one that took me out of 1st place contention last night. some kind of mystery sharp rock is wrecking havoc on dudes' high-end tubulars.
  6. hot rig, but the roadie in me wants to see that stem flipped and slammed.
  7. 1st place to flat tire with 2 to go/DNF yet again. Super fun course though.
  8. http://www.behindthebarriers.com/ new episode up
  9. Joker, let's just say my tires are cursed.
  10. Welp.......... I'm resigning from posting about bikes until something good happens.
  11. Don't worry, tomorrow's another day. Biggest one day cross race in the world. My field's gonna be like 200 people...
  12. Well, I was rolling in 1st place again today. Then I pinch flatted. We'll see what tomorrow has in store. 4 DNF's in a row, 5 mechanicals in a row.
  13. Praying for the cross gods to keep me mechanical-free in tomorrow's CX race. Also, a W would be nice :D
  14. Another cross race, another mechanical. This time I had a 45 second gap on the rest of the field with 2 laps to go. Chain dropped and got totally lodged in the chainguard. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
  15. UGH FLATTED OUT END OF FIRST LAP. i'll get my podium in the B's eventually... when my bike cooperates for once.
  16. http://bicycletraveler.bicyclingaroundtheworld.nl/first-issue This is looking pretty sweet. First issue, download the PDF free online. In other news, it's Sunday. It's cyclocross. I prayed for rain all night last night. Stoked as shit.
  17. Computers wise, I really just like the Cateye Strada wireless... I've never used cadence even when I've had it available, and would prefer to have a separate watch for HRM when I'm out running for CX. Also, the stem mount for that computer is the best.
  18. Soup, it's an ongoing debate and I go back and forth. There's one (old) school of thought that says that intentionally bringing insufficient food and bonking at the end makes the body adapt to less food and run more willingly on fat reserves instead of carbohydrates. I think this is the way to go for weight loss, but if you're already skinny, it doesn't do much help. There's another school of thought that says if you start starving the body, you're going to end up losing muscle mass and not be able to go as hard. I think this is pretty much on the money; especially during intervals, going in underfueled or not refueling between sets is a recipe for disaster, or at least not being able to go as hard and as long as if you were refueling. I'd say there's truth to both schools of thought - lightly starving yourself near the end of the ride will shed some weight if you don't make up the lost calories by eating yourself into the ground after the ride, but sufficient fuel (carbs) is best in the long run. Additionally, just the act of doing LSD miles in the winter will push the body towards running more on fat reserves than carbs, although that's partially due to slow twitch muscle recruitment. In regards to Gu and gels, they're awesome during races (especially on the starting line of a crit; that's my secret weapon when I attack off the line), but relying on them during long training rides is kinda expensive. I'd just throw some maltodextrin or dextrose in your water and have a steady backup of solid foods, or at least Honey Stingers/chomps.
  19. iPhone 4. Yeah looking at it during the actual ride my readings were off as fuck, but a few hours post-ride it somehow swung back into accurate measures. One water bottle is a mistake! Last time I pulled a stunt like that, I had to take an emergency stop to accumulate some of these: Gu works super good as insurance on a long ride - otherwise I just come packed with Clif Bars and PBJ while training cuz cheap, easily storable and good size-to-calorie ratio. Definitely been bailed out finishing the last 10 miles of a century with a Gu though, whereas if I hadn't had it I would have been passed out on the side of the road.
  20. Just checked Strava again and it recalibrated my shit to more accurate readings... awzum. Gonna have some fun with this...
  21. Just downloaded Strava on my phone and clocked it up for today's Sunday ride. My stats say I rode 126 miles and averaged 30.6mph... what gives? Actual distance is more like 80 miles with a 16.1mph avg. according to my CatEye. In other news my cross bike is back on the road and it rained today!! This is totally awesome, save for the fact that my ride flaked so no racing this weekend for me. My legs are absolutely thrashed after today's mixed terrain (40% gravel) ride though. I did this: http://www.rapha.cc/otto-miller--round-one Joker you gotta join me on these Otto Miller rides. They're slaughtering my legs! Choc, if the rental place doesn't mind you getting your bike extra grimey come whenever you're on vacation here, same goes for you. Otherwise we can stick to good ol' pavement...
