  1. Re: Tsunami Slams Northern Japan After Massive 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Coast

Yeah, been watching this for a few hours now. Watching the tsunami live here:

    http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/

They showed whole towns being swept away from a helicopter. cars and trucks jst getting swept off the roads as they try to escape. Fucking insane.

They say there's tsunami warnings for Hawaii now too. I remember reading that someone on here just moved there or something...

  2. Count... awesome on 3rd place in your race!!

Rubbish... in Vancouver BC for an art show, for a week. Probably won't race till POC or some crits around that time.

You've had some ok weather for the past few days if you brought a bike up with you. I'm going to check out the show as well. If I'm looking at the right event, it looks to be pretty good.

  3. the main advantage the machine has is how fast it rings in to answer. ken and brad probably both know most of the answers but aren't able to ring in fast enough to beat the machine to answering.

this is pretty much just free advertising for ibm like when deep blue played gary kasparov and beat him. their stock went through the roof. there were also allegations that deep blue had help in beating kasparov. publicity stuntin'.

    From this link: http://www.livescience.com/12859-3-strengths-weaknesses-watson-computer-jeopardy.html

    — Watson cannot time its buzz-in to the reading of a clue or "buy time."While playing "Jeopardy!" contestants can buzz in when a light goes on after host Alex Trebek stops reading the clue (click early on your button and you're penalized a crucial quarter-second). Watson does not have speech recognition software that allows it to "hear" Trebek; instead, clues are transmitted electronically to the machine, so it gets to "see" a clue the same time that a contestant does.

Due to concerns that Watson could beat humans to the buzzer, IBM hooked Watson up to a signaling device that requires a physical pressing of a button, the same as human players. Ultimately in this setup, however, the advantage goes to us air-breathers because we can time our buzz-in to Trebek's clue reading.

"The reaction time of a machine is faster than a human, but that's not what matters in "Jeopardy!" — what matters is timing," said IBM's David Gondek, a researcher on the Watson project. "The best players read the clue, try to determine when Alex will finish reading, and then buzz in." Gondek said that "Watson is a strong buzzer, but Watson is not anticipating Alex's reading, it is reacting to a signal. A human can come in before Watson."

Also, as mentioned above, Watson is not programmed to buzz in until it has high confidence in an answer; a human can buzz in, though, and by rule have five seconds to work with before having to provide an answer. Human players, in other words, can take a risk and buy themselves time to come up with an answer, which is not a bad gambit if the category is an area of familiarity. Watson does not have this strategic luxury.

  4. i want say they took all the places of where daily doubles have been in the history of jeopardy and made an equation to guess where it was going to be

probably one of the easier algorithms they had to make

This is exactly what they did. Read it in some article a few days ago. I can't even fathom what sort of math went into getting Watson to get the subtleties of the questions on Jeopardy

  5. If you're truly serious about what you want to do I would save up some more and get a tower with as much power in it as possible. I know 3 people who were in your position about a year ago and 1 went with a MAc Pro tower quad core with 10 gigs of ram and the other two skimped. 1 has already upgraded, the other wishes they could and the dude who made the big purchase said it's the best thing he has done. Saves him a ton of time in rendering, etc. Not to mention once he got a job he was able to work from home sometimes because his box was like the one at his job and he can count on the performance to be at a pro level.

And if you're thinking getting the laptop will be good because you can carry it around and work anywhere, don't bother. A 17 inch Macbook Pro is a pain in the ass to carry around and you basically have to bring an office with you to work somewhere else. A workstation at home is definitely the way to go.

So, if you can't get a big ol' tower, go for the imac.

  6. Actually a mate and i were talking about this the other day and how more and more people are growing up with their mindset focused on online social status, appearance and what not.

And how the fuckers are obsessed with creating their own fluffed up propaganda to make themselves appear more attractive (fat bitch downwards photo) or successful than they really are (posing next to another persons baller car).

And how people who need to peg and rank themselves all the time are obviously lacking in substance.

Oh and how this mindset is only creating more fucking wanker PR, marketing, events, fluffbag oner people studying at fluffed up private colleges who at the end of the day dont contribute much to society

I agree with all of this. In the industry I work in, everyone has a blog, twitter, facebook, linkedin, quora, and a bunch of other profiles. I don't really partake otherwise in the whole deal. I've found 99% of the people who are not worth talking to are the ones who create 90% of the content on these outlets. They're trying to create an 'online presence' that sets them up to be a so-called 'expert' on the chosen niche. The thing is, the people who are doing big things and actually moving the industry along barely partake in these masturbatory exercises. When they do tweet or whatever, you can bet it's worth listening to what they have to say.

And don't get me started on when you meet one of the 99%ers in real life. It's a non stop buzzword-fest and regurgitation of obvious 'insight' into things that are happening that they picked up off of other blogs and shit.

tl;dr: The more you facebooktweetblog, the less you have to say.

  7. Re: UNBOXING • 24-pk mystery box if beer

When I was in London, these dudes were talking about TMNT.

Then less than 30 minutes later, I passed a church having a table sale and they had an adult TMNT costume hanging up.

I bought it for like 2 dollars and stuck it away in my purse.

We went back to hang out and dudes ordered some pizza.

I said I had to go put on my pizza party outfit and came out as a Ninja Turtle.

    They were all like "WHAAAAA?"

    It was pretty cute.

That's kind of what I'm all about.

And then did they call you a legend? English people are always calling others legendary when they do things of an awesome nature.

  8. The best part of it is that the tickets were so cheap that including a place to stay it's under $400 per person.

So far it looks like we're going to the Bruce Lee Statue, riding an escalator that is a km long that has bars all the way up, hitting up Victoria Peak, and another mountain that has a giant statue on it, blowing up firecrackers on Chinese New Year, going on a mission for the best dumplings in HK, going to Kowloon for cheap beer and the shadier (awesomer) side of the city-state.

Again, if anyone has any cool shit do do, post up. Will report back with a picture thread when the time comes, of course.

And Symbols, i just might get all the dead skin on my feet eaten off by tiny fish. I'm kind of ticklish, so we'll see, haha.

  9. Re: fuck my life

Wasn't this guy always coming on here and acting hard because he was from some place in Chicago? Now's he whining and crying because some girl didn't want to be his valentine anymore and had a bit of hard luck?
