I think avatars would be a bad idea just because it gets annoying reading through a thread and seeing the same pictures over and over, but maybe you could just have an on/off switch so that people could choose whether they like it or not.

I'll be sittin in my house at night and the raccoons just walk on up, stand there lookin at me, and then just walk away. They also really like to walk around on my roof at night which is annoying as hell.

If you're gonna go into one of those ESL programs in Japan, do it with the japanese government. I just spent some time there and I met several English teachers, who all went through the japanese government, and they all said it was the best way to go in terms of pay rate and your options.
