Pints of Garvey XT-70 Violet. Goes up to $100 a pint. I'm holding on to my last 24 pints. Works great in my NYC Mop that I created. http://www.nycmop.com

  4. OK guys....lets not let this get personal. It is all good. We are all learning.

Hell, I am still learning new things everyday of my life. I think every person on earth learns something new every day. Weather it be ink or other things in general.

We all are into graff...it should be a brotherhood.

    Peace.

  5. bumsuck, i had meant methylene blue when i said gentian blue, jsut got a little criss crossed. i was aware garvey makes blue ink also but i had remembered reading somewhere that only their violet and red is any good, and personally i don't like red. maybe i'm mixed up with feibings? i dunno who cares.

omen you said the pigment marsh is thin so does it dry fast? like i said most of my stuff that gets buffed happens within a day or so; if it rides for a few days and then they try a buff it's usually good for a while longer. preciate the knowledge. im def gonna order some white marsh and figure out some dope colors. peace.

Yes, marsh Pigment dries very fast. It dries just as fast as rugular dye type ink. That is because, it is just like dye type ink...with a pigment compoment. People that make their "own" paint ink is just what it is...watered down paint with thinner or whatever, that alone makes paint take forever to dry.

So, to make your own paint ink is whack, it fucks up your markers and it is buffable, it does not drip well and it vsucks. Even krink sucks. It is just like watered down silver spray paint that takes forever to dry...it is overrated. If I was not getting it for $5 a jar. I would not have bought it.

Garvey Blue ink is great. But, don't bother with blue garvey when you can get a quart of blue dye marsh cheaper and it is just as good. It don't come off. In fact, if they stopped making garvey...it would not be a big deal. Because Marsh is made well, it is cheaper, it comes in more colors and it even comes in pigment. Garvey is good shit...don't get me wrong. But, marsh is just as good. The problem is nobody has really used marsh (except for maybe black). So, you have to see for yourself. The majority of the subway insides that were bombed and could not be buffed...were bombed with Marsh and Flomaster (they were the same componets...more or less. Flomaster went out of business) You could get marsh in 100 different colors in dye and in pigment, it came in 4 oz cans as well as pints and up. But, we got the 4oz cans so we had a choice of so many different colors (the silver pigment was the bomb). Those days are over now. Garvey was a treat back then...we were lucky to get it and when we did, it was always opened. Because, it was snatched from the market, it was before they used price tags, they stamped the price directly on the product with garvey. It was hard to get do to the fact they only sold it to supermarkets in bulk, there was no net back then and Garvey was more or less called "Supermarket ink" not garvey.

instead of getting gentian violet, get violet garvey, it's color is from gentian violet and it's already mixed porpotionally to be the strongest it can be.

gentian blue doesn't exist, the closest substitute i can think of is methylene blue. but hell, i'm pretty sure blue garvey get it's color from methylene blue, and its already mixed as good as it can get, so you might as well get it.

OMEN, does the ultraviolet Marsh stain as hard as violet Garvey? and does it last outdoors by itself, or does it fade like straight garvey does?

I have never put the ultraviolet marsh side by side with violet garvey for a buff test. However, the ultraviolet is a bitch to buff, it has a better color than garvey and you get twice as much for a few bucks more than garvey cost.

However, to ensure it has staining power as well as long term outdoor use. Mix violet garvey with violet pigment marsh. I don't normally mix inks for staining reasons (because, these inks are so good, there is not much more you can do to them to make them more permanent. you will have a bigger chance of fucking up the original components the chemists used to make their product. Being these inks are industrial, they made them as permanent as possible. The garvey is stamping ink for prices to go directly on the metal/plastic and if they could make it more permanent they would have...look under at the bottom of a soda can and you will see numbers in ink. Try to buff it and see how hard it is to remove). I mix it for making different colors. Weather I am trying to make it darker or I use the "paint" pigment to make a whole different color. With a white pigment marsh as the base, you have your pigment and then you can mix in your dye type for your color. It has always been a success. Because, you have the staining power of the dye and the weather proof with the pigment. So, in essence, all you need is garvey and marsh pigment...period! Straight violet marsh pigment will last years outdoors and it is a fresh color and you can get more ink for the price. Garvey stains hard. But, it is not weather friendly like pigment marsh is. The garvey fades just with the dam sun hitting it. Why that happens, I don't know. Because, it never comes off on alot of surfaces...no matter what you try to buff it.

But, if you use garvey on a porous surface outdoors, it sinks in and stays there forever.

But, for street bombing, if you want your tags to last forever...you have to use pigment.

There is no need to add break fluid, fish oil, saw dust or whatever some dudes mix with their ink to fuck it up. Just use it raw dog.

No, marsh stains as hard as garvey. But the pigment marsh lasts

longer outside, but might not resist the buff. So what to do? Mix them

    it's been said, read back.

I could not have said it any better brother. :)

you mentioned white pigment marsh as a good base for making other colors. i'm curious if you have ever tried mixing it with addivtives i.e. gentian violet?

i'm trying to figure out a nice strong dope looking blueish ink. i'm gonna order some white marsh formt he site you sent (by the way props for that link). i'm thinking of a mix of marsh, a little bit of garvey, and gentian blue.

also, does the white marsh mix alright with paint?

    [/b]

Hmmmm, white marsh is paint (paint type pigment) and it will last well over 20 years out doors (marsh pigment that is...mixed with nothing).

As far as making a dope blue color...you can get Garvey in blue dye type, it has a nice dark electric blue color that stains just as good as the violet.

If you take a look at the Marsh site I posted above...you can get black pigmeant and violet pigmeant and a couple of other colors in pigment. I think you can get a whole quart of black marsh dye for 17 bucks and pigment for 22 I think. That is a hell of alot of ink and the ink mixed with nothing will last forever outdoors...it is paint type ink and it is so thin that you could put it in a miniwide or pilot type marker and it will flow nicely...even the drips will last 20 or 30 years..maybe more, outside.

Mix some dye type in it and you can make your colors. Even the marsh dye type ink is very good, it comes in more colors than garvey and you can get not pints but quarts for a really good price. The marsh "ultra-violet" dye type ink is pretty high power. Most people have never used it on this site. But, I have and it is just as good as garvey and you can't go wrong with the price and the amount...then you have marsh pigment and that is fresh too. The pigment violet mixed with blue marsh dye type is fresh. Hell, you can make plenty of fresh colors. The good thing with pigment marsh is it is just like mixing different color paint to make your own color. Get a can of white for the base...all the marsh pigment is just as thin as the dye type. They used to make marsh silver in pigment and it was great, it dripped, lasted forever, would not ruin your nibs and was just good ink. I am sad they took it off the market.

It is hard to make something that is made by the professionals that would be any better.

I tried for years and realized to stick with a Garvey/Marsh pigment (paint) ink combo. The marsh site can also get you colors not listed...they just have to order it for you...at the same low price.

Omen, that is exactly what a chalk marker is but bigger..So why did you say toy's used 'em..?

Save the drama homes. Your bullshit is not needed or wanted on this board. There is nothing you can teach any of us here. I was being sarcastic when I made that statement. I had a moderator clean up that other thread with your comments and me feeding into them. I could not believe I was letting some kid like you, make me get stupid. That thing was squashed and yet you still want to cause problems...just leave it alone now.

As far as technikal, he is not brown nosing anyone...he is just calling things as he sees them. I have ALOT of solid data on this thread that is useful for serious people. So, instead of trying to start problems for no reason. How about trying to learn something and maybe it will give you some ideas. Causing drama is only going to get you banned and your posts deleted.

Why you want to continue bullshit is very toy of you. We are here to talk about ink. Not cause problems over petty non-sense that was already squashed. Others give me the same respect as I give them and I am sure technikal and the rest of us serious people feel the same way.

There is nothing you can tell me about anything. However, if you show some respect, you will get respect. An attitude like yours will get you no where fast and it does not impress anyone at all.

Did you think others were going to jump on your bandwagon and start problems on this thread with you? If you did, you are mistaken.

I may have made a witty comment (on another thread). I was just joking around. But, for some reason you took it personal, like I hit some nerves or something.

So lets squash this bullshit before it gets out of hand.

    How does that sound? ;)

  8. Rap & hip hop sux....G-Unit, gimmie a break!

The only rapper I remotely enjoy and I think is the best is Eminem.

The rest of the rappers these days come a dime a dozen...they are all clones that have no talent, they use a beat box and shout in a mic.

You can't compare it to real talent like rock groups that make real music.

Plus, common sense dictates why Eminem is the best rapper, just like the best writers are... Hmmmmm?

I grew up on old school rap from the very early 80's and that had style. Now it is just a rerun of the same old bullshit, tec-9's, smoking blunts and killing Whitley.

    They are garbage.

When I see a white kid walking around like someone he is not...with his pants hanging down, a fade type haircut a doo rag and talking like he is from Harlem but lives in the country. I feel like putting my foot up his ass.

Most people don't know where the style of wearing your pants hanging off your butt came from. They just do it to be accepted and think it is cool.

The style started in jail. When you went to jail a lot of the times the prison clothes did not fit (meaning it was too big) So, you would see inmates walking around holding up their prison greens up or they just let them hang. Somehow that developed into some sort of street style and 99% of the people that wear their pants that way, don't know where the style stemmed from.

Also, wearing your sneakers and boots unlaces or with no laces also came from prison. Because, they would take your shoe laces away when you went in for processing and the same with a belt. Hence, the pants would hang down and your shoes would flop. The removel of the belt and or the over sized prison greens developed some sort of style that you see idiots wear on the streets today.

I spent 7 years in prison and saw it all. I am not proud to say I was in Attica, Sing Sing, Rikers Island, etc; But, it made me hard and it made me strong and see things in a different light.

ink you can put in those bottles! where do you get those? Actually omen

the nib on the face paints kick ass, they last forever dont rip or pop off.

It would be hard to fit, even the smallest strip of eraser in the hole

anyway. Just clean em out and there good.

Being I never used them, I just assumed the nib was not as rugged as a thick strip of felt.

But, if you can bomb rough surfaces from brick to rock to glass with them, then they must be OK.

However, I will stick with what works for me. If I did not have the stuff I have now I might use them. The nibs on my mops made from erasers are extra wide about an inch and a half of rugged drippyness. But, I suppose those face paints are fuctional...they beat a blank.

    ;)

  10. Those chalk, face paint and Squeezie look proper. Just take out that bullshit nib that comes with them and put a thick folded eraser in as a nib and tear shit up...of course after you take the garbage that is in those containers out and put in the correct ink Garvey/marsh--pigment. Marsh pigment is just as thin as the dye type, it is just pigmented instead. So, it will not clog up anything. I use straight Marsh Pigment in my miniwides and it flows like fluid.

I guess if you can't get your hands on an arrid "type" container they are the next best thing. The good thing about arrid & round 4oz shoe polish containers is you can put the cap back on regardless if you have a fat eraser strip as the nib. The eraser nibs will last forever, they won't wear out and they don't get snagged on shit...they go over everything and are drippy as hell.

    Peace. :king:

  11. I would never use "face paint." Just get pigment ink....that way it is weather proof and you won't fuck up any markers. "Face paint" is not made for any type of marker. But, Marsh pigment is and of course garvey works with anything. Mix them together and you have the best ink you can find and or make...You will never fuck up a nib and marker again and you can get both inks cheap. It beats fucking up your markers all the time.

i see you don't too much dig the ban roll on deodorant because the ball doesn't pop off easily. here's my rememdy for anyone who can't find the arrid.

take a sharp knife and stab a whole right through the ball. then grab some pliers and grip inside the tear and yank the ball out. if any of the rim bends slightly, you should be able to shape it back up with the pliers or your hand. pour out the deodorant, or try using some of it first you smelly bastard, and bam, a nice carcuss for a dope mop.

omen, couple questiosn for you since you seem to be the wise man here.

have you ever tried a mix of violet garv xt70 with marsh black dye type? i have done a close to half and half mixture of xt70 with black pilot, enough pilot so that the ink comes out black. shit stains hard as hell indoor and outdoor, but fades just a little in the sun, so i'm wondering if dye type marsh would be any better than the pilot.

second question is have you used black pigment marsh with garv? i usually bomb with one light color for dark surfaces and a dark color for light surfaces, usually an otr with garv/pilot and a ban/eraser mop with silver rusto/mineral spirits/dot3. seems to me white marsh with garv would be more on the lighter side, so is the back as good as the white?

also how does the pigment ink do by itself? preciate the wisdom. peace

When I first started making mops...I used ban containers. In fact it was all I used, they were glass and a plastic ring held in the ball and you would simply pop the ring off the container and out came the ball and you cleaned it and made your mop. The arrid is like the old ban containers...with the ring. The only difference, the container is not glass it is plastic.

The problem with the new ban containers is not getting the ball off, you can pop it out with a screw driver. But, once the ball is out, there is just a tiny hole instead of a hole the diameter of the bottle. So, that prevents you from shoving a wide eraser strip down into the container. So, if you can't get arrid...just get the 4 oz round shoe polish container. Take off the foam nib, pour our the shoe polish, clean it, dry it and add your ink and fold an eraser strip and shove it in the opening. It is drippy and works like a champ. Plus, it hold a lot of ink.

As far as mixing dye with dye. It does not make sense. If you are looking for dye type ink that you don't want to fade...all you need is to get marsh pigment and mix it with the dye type ink. That way you have the staining power of the dye and the long last non fading with the pigment type ink. You can make fresh colors with white marsh pigment as the base. It depends on how much dye you use to darken it. Half white and half violet Garvey violet makes a very decent color that won't buff nor fade.

However, Marsh also makes different colors of pigment, they even make violet pigment and you can use that straight up without mixing it with anything and it will last 20 years. I mentioned that I put a tag on a metal lamp post with pigment marsh around 1982-83 and it is still there almost as bright as the day I wrote it...it has been there so long, it is now part of the lamp post. So, common sense says mixing it was not needed.

Just scroll back to the last page and go to the real Marsh site and you can get quarts for a really good price....A quart is a hell of a lot of ink, and it is from Marsh...one of the best companies. Even marsh dye type violet or ultraviolet is very good. All you need is garvey and marsh or just marsh pigment in your favorite color and a good marker/mop and bomb. No more wasting time trying to enhance something that does not need to be enhanced...Just make your marker and get up...it is cut and dry. :)

    Edit,

Here is the link (below) to the source...get your marsh here to prevent getting ripped off. You can also get a marsh 99 metal valve marker in round or chisel tip for only 9 bucks. Graff sites charge anywhere from 18 to 25 bucks for the same marker. So, it is better to go to the source for good prices. As for Garvey...go to Art Primo if you don't have an account with the Garvey company.

I think if you live in a non-urban area that has no places to use ink...spray is more handy. Weather you are doing a peice or tagging. Because, you can get up with spray on anything. But, in cities like New York. You can use a marker on ALOT of places. There is so many smooth things to tag on. As a young writer...I was always more into bombing the insides of the trains and I would do throw ups once in awhile on the outsides. As I stated on another post. I could take my time bombing the inside of every car, stay warm and not be seen my the vandal squad. So, when that train rolled on monday....I had up to 50 drippy tags in every car on the entire line and on the outside you just see the piece and it is gone. But, on the insides. People had no choice but to look at all the tags while they rode the train.

You have two kinds of writers..you have artists and you have bombers that strictly tag. I figured I could get up more and quicker by being just a writer...instead of spending a long time on a piece. Plus, if you tagged with a fat cap on your paint. You could see it big on the streets and the outsides of the trains.

Right on, dog. I live in a city, but i guess i just don't have the feel for markers. It's no NYC, but there's a healthy scene and plenty of surfaces. I usually bring at least one marker with me when I go out, but my medium of choice is definitely spray paint. I much prefer a clean brick wall with a can of rusto gloss black and a fatcap. It's bigger, and I'm more comfortable with paint anyways.

I guarantee I'd be the guy doing the outsides with pieces back in the day. You might catch an inside or two once in a while, but I'd try to stay up with the burners and simples. It's just my nature.

    [/b]

Thats is cool. When we went bombing we went in large crewz. So, we split up...some of us would attack the insides and other dudes would destroy the outsides. If they did a murel...they did back to back names. While we were hitting them up on the insides, they were hitting us up on the outsides...it got tough in the mid to late 80's. Because, they were cacking down and it was impossible to do a burner. So, you would see more throw ups in the later 80's on the trains and the insides were fucking bombed!

I am the same way, but the reverse...I carry ink supplies more than I carry paint. But, I always carry one flat black with a fat cap and one silver with fat can to tag with and I carry thin caps if I am going to do a throwie. But, I try to stay with at least two cans of spray...one dark and one light. So, I can hit on places ink can't.

Here's my cap stash.  I have some nice friends.

You new school writers are lucky to have caps that are made for graff writing.

When I was hiting the trains...we had to get our caps from the supermarket from different products that sprayed shit. The fatest cap I ever used to this day came off a hair spray can. It was a little fater than a NY fat cap or a rusto orange. The entire cap was red and we would have to pop the lid take the cap and put the lid back on and go to the next can till we had enough. Then there was the "foam" caps that were wide too...It came off a bathroom foam cleaner. We also had to make them by melting the hole to widen it or to make it smaller.

Testors spray paint came with nice caps we had to hook up. But, as you can see from the old school pics of subway graff...our caps did the job. It just would have been nice if we could get different caps like you guys can get now.

Don't get me wrong, dude. I haven't bought a cap in about 5 years. Those bags are either gifts or hook-me-ups from homies. I still raid the cans of Krylon workable fixatif, clear coats, graffiti remover sprays, testors, elmers spray glue, you name it. I usually buy a couple cans at the store, pop off the stocks, and replace them with thins or whatever off clear coats. I just put the stocks back on the clear coat cans and no one's the wiser.

I got a couple of those jifoam caps years ago from an old schooler NY friend. I saved a couple to display, but the ones I used were pretty nice. I'd do outlines with them on simple stuff. Not the best line quality, but decent output.

Racking paint is ridiculous nowadays. You can probably get over on Walmart or Home Depot, but you're talking just a can or two in the belt. With all the cameras, it's not worth the risk to me just to steal $5 worth of paint. Smaller, independent hardware stores are much easier, but then I run into the moral issue of stealing from an actual person. Some corporation isn't going to miss the $1000 or so I could rack from them on a yearly basis, but a mom and pop will. That could be all it takes to put them out of business, what with all the strain Home Depot and Walmart already put on their livelihood.

I'd rather work for a living than live up to some outdated, immature ideal that a bunch of 15 year olds invented as a way to "keep it real". It doesn't really apply to dudes over the age of 18, when you really have something to lose. After you hit 25, I think you have issues if you rack all your paint. Nothing wrong with pocketing a can or two if the situation arises, but get a damn job, yo.

    [/b]

I don't doubt you can rack paint in the suburbs in big stores like you mentioned. But, New York is on lock down and there is so much crime that they take no chances now days. I am sure if you live out in the country...it is a lot easier to rack paint, than lets say The South bronx or Harlem. But, at one time it was easy to rack in The Big Apple.

If I was younger and did not have much cash and lived outside of the cities. I would be racking like a motherfucker.

    Peace.

You have two kinds of writers..you have artists and you have bombers that strictly tag. I figured I could get up more and quicker by being just a writer...instead of spending a long time on a piece. Plus, if you tagged with a fat cap on your paint. You could see it big on the streets and the outsides of the trains.

But, ink was always my thing. Even though I used a hell of alot of paint in the last 25 years. :king:

Here's my cap stash.  I have some nice friends.

You new school writers are lucky to have caps that are made for graff writing.

When I was hiting the trains...we had to get our caps from the supermarket from different products that sprayed shit. The fatest cap I ever used to this day came off a hair spray can. It was a little fater than a NY fat cap or a rusto orange. The entire cap was red and we would have to pop the lid take the cap and put the lid back on and go to the next can till we had enough. Then there was the "foam" caps that were wide too...It came off a bathroom foam cleaner. We also had to make them by melting the hole to widen it or to make it smaller (with a pin or a paper clip).

Testors spray paint came with nice caps we had to hook up. But, as you can see from the old school pics of subway graff...our caps did the job. It just would have been nice if we could get different caps like you guys can get now.

    Edit,

Back in the 80's Racking paint was very easy...they had no cameras, no eletronic shit and they did not lock up the spray paint. We would walk out of the store with up to 50 cans at one time in our coat. Then we would go to store to store. Now, it is tough to rack (in New York City). I would not do it anyway cause now I have cash (enough to buy anything I need or want).

But, it must be a bitch to get on paint for free...unless you have a sponser.

Cool.  Thanks for dropping the knowledge, Omen.  It's about time we got someone like you in here.

@Old Growth....It is my pleasure to talk about things that people can use to help make a true graff writer.

I always have a spray bottle of KABOOM and a scrub brush just in case I get a drop or an ink spill. I had some Garvey spray on out tan rug and I rushed and sprayed it with kaboom before it had a chance to soak in and fuck my the carpet...my wife would have killed me if I fucked up the carpet. So, you have to be ready for that to happen. When I work with ink I use the bathroom or the kitchen over a piece of cardboard with latex gloves.

Once the ink sets in...you can more or less forget about getting the stain out.

It dyes the carpet. Paint type ink comes out a little easier. But, Dye type ink like Black Marsh or any type of Garvey has to be addressed as soon as it is spilled.

When I was living with my folks. My room looked like the 1 train. It was fucking bombed! I would test my paint and mops and markers by doing tags. My friends would do tags, even throw ups. I had Kel Tags, Min tags and a dozen other famous writers that visited me tag on my walls and when we ran out of wall, door and ceiling space. I started to tag on my furniture, my dresser, my desk, my bed, the sides of the TV, the fish tank, even the windows. My carpet was full of stains and drips. My folks were mad at first and they just accepted it...Lol
