Not long after the Washington, D.C., temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kensington, Md., was completed in the early 1970s, some audacious vandal, who to this day remains anonymous, noticed a resemblance between the temple and the fabled Emerald City from the motion picture The Wizard of Oz and acted on it by painting "Surrender Dorothy" on the railroad bridge that crosses over a portion of the outer loop of Interstate 495 as it approaches the temple (doctored image pictured here). The graffito has been scrubbed as often as the vandalism has been redone, and the concrete bridge has gone through unpainted periods as well.
