  1. Bacon, Kane, Kwest, Rath. Burners and style.
  2. This guy stayed at my house a while ago... Tagged my fridge with magnets. It's still there lol
  3. Yes sir! I checked my sign up date.. 2001. Damn lol. We old. I still pop in every so often to lurk, hoping the PWA and new version can get this a little traction.
  4. Tried out the beta, here's my initial feedback. Platform: Android, Google Pixel, Firefox - All updated with the latest. - FF install was smooth. open the UI menu, tap install, add to homescreen. Boing boing. - I was already logged in through FF, that carries through. Boing. - Opens full screen with phone UI buttons visible. - I tried to write feedback here within the PWA but couldn't get the keyboard to stay active, it kept disappearing. Had to go back to browser tab version to do this. - Surfing around has a 4-5 second delay from tap to execute when tapping links. All links, not just the odd one. - Scrolling performance is pretty laggy. A little choppy, jumps around sometimes, and 50% of the time the initial swipe-to-scroll doesn't register, requiring multiple swipe attempts to continue down the screen. With longer photo threads it's pretty annoying. Some JS performance benchmarking and testing is in order for sure, but probably not worth it with this version as the new one is launching soon? Definitely need to keep on top of memory leaks, and some flame chart audits are good. I have a love/hate relationship with offloading everything into the front end, and much prefer native server, and nowadays SSR. Overall baseline performance is just better with SSR and progressive enhancement. I really like the caching opportunities and installation aspects of the PWA, but the caching can be a bit of a maintenance hair pulling lol. Solid first beta, but for now will have to stick to the browser tab version as it's much more performant. Boing Boing.
  5. Dems fightin words... Who the hell @'d me ... Get off my lawn.
  6. hahaha, yeah, i'm almost there too. I don't yet hold things further away, I do sometimes need a nice bright light to hold things under though. I quite like the aesthetic on desktop too, but adjusted the copy in these boxes slightly. I've added letter-spacing: .75px and dropped to font-weight: 100 instead of the base 400. It's so much more enjoyable, and so much more readable. That's the tricky thing with forums like this. It doesn't much matter when browsing the photo threads, it's only when getting into in-depth convos and reading long form responses. Definitely a balancing act. Ultimately it all circles back around to the topic at hand in some form. If i've been molded into a social media junkie, as most have to this point, with the UX being quick hits and limited engagement, when creating a space that's the opposite of that, or trying to get people away from that, extra care and research in something often glossed over and overlooked like this issue, would only benefit. I've run into it too many times to count over the years, and for the most part, the users have no idea why they don't like something, or don't stay, or aren't engaged - even if the content is what they're there for. I'm just in a unique position, being someone who builds this stuff, to be able to analyze, pop open the dev tools and mess around, look under the hood.
  7. During the day I don't have much time to browse anything on a desktop, as I'm neck deep in code. But my downtime, phone on in front of the TV, phone on browsing and reading before bed. I turned 46 this year, so i'm right there with a lot of people, but don't yet need glasses. But I do need to be mindful of eyestrain because of the hours I spend in front of a monitor all day already. I frequently use the reader view for a lot of articles, or save to Pocket for a better reading experience. I've managed to ease my eyes just a little bit more here in the last 10 minutes, by updating my userStyles css for 12oz, changing the link colour from straight white to e1e1e1. White is too electric on the dark background. Super subtle changes that make my experience pleasurable, and seems as though i may not be the only one. I wish it was this simple on a phone, although I am looking into firefox add ons to let me do this.
  8. That is indeed the one and only reason I'm not here more, my eyes and brain just can't take it. I was also mistaken, the mobile font size is set at 13px, with a tight line height. It's says 1.6, but that doesn't seem right, although because it's Roboto and not a standard font it could be. There's a lot of UX research out there about readability of fonts, uses, etc. with Roboto not being a very friendly readable font on mobile unless it's at least set to 15px, usually 16 - which is most users default font base size. Roboto is a great font, and great for Headings and other uses, just not for long form. in the css: 'at' screen and max-width 767px - .ipsType_normal is set at 13px. ".ipsType_normal" is the selector you're looking for. As a test in my dev tools i've reset it to 1rem, letter-spacing .1px, which is much better, and makes my eyes go ahhhhhhh... I didn't mean to hijack the thread with something not so relevant, as I do have quite the opinion on the topic. Also didn't see the bitch thread that @ravenmentioned.
  9. I've been one of the ones who pops in from time to time, and who has popped in to check on things throughout the years. I'm old school digital, not really a fan of social, and much prefer venues like this. I enjoy the reading, long posts, long thoughts, sometimes I contribute, sometimes not. I agree with much of what people are talking about in this thread and others about social media, evolution, next steps for social society in general. For me, I've been designing/building sites since the 90's and have been swept up in phone culture, unfortunately, primarily because it's my job. From performance to readability, to feature sets, new api's, I'm constantly on my phone - this post no different. I find myself on my phone, most times. For me personally, it's a no brainer to want to be here, on a stable platform, with others, creating content with other like minded people. Unfortunately for me, and may seem like a trivial thing to most, I physically can't stay here for long. I've mentioned it in passing a couple of times over the years, but I physically can't read this content for very long, on my phone, before my eyes burn out with strain. body copy font of Roboto, at 14px is too hard to read. I had to take breaks reading the the first post. It's not a very friendly reading font. On a desktop, I use my own CSS overides for post copy, minor - letter spacing, line height, line length, straight verdana - but on a phone it's much more of a pain in the ass as we don't have access to the same browser internals. That's my 2¢, and the most important reason I'm not on here much anymore.
  10. Yep.. saw the contest. I'm still kicking around.
  11. Are you still doing tweaks and or bug fixes? Pretty solid on my phone, good work, but have come across a couple things.
  12. Burp.. I've been in and out of here the whole time, thought i'd say hello.. Would tend to agree with Raven in the fact that sentiment is tipping back to communities like this. I've been working in digital since 06 up here in the north, a lot of years at equivalents of Comcast/Conde Nast - Dev/UI/UX/IA/Strategy "Social" in general is played out, run it's course, and the in it for a minute zombies are starting to wake up, look for something deeper, more meaningful. Hopefully a good user experience, performance, here, will help draw some people back. Looking forward to it. K.
  13. Raises hand. Pretty sure 2001, and this is my second account.
  14. I have my settings set for "text only". You've also assumed i'm surfing on a computer. I should also add that "monitor larger than 1900" is limiting on a number of levels, and clarify my thinking on this. - My TV is 1920px, I surf on it quite a bit. - People change their default system font size quite often. 12px is actually too small reading on my phone. - I surf on, and many people surf on, Game consoles - sitting 10 feet away. Ever tried to read 12px from 10ft away? Pixels are an older unit of measure we used to try to accommodate every and all browser, and to force a box around a design to make it look exactly the same everywhere. This is old thinking and unfortunately by sticking with pixels for the new design the site is handicapped from the got go, already outdated and not very future proofed. It is quite safe to use EM and REM as new units and could even use VH, VM, vmin, vmax (with fallback) and CALC. By building a responsive website, which this website is kind of, you're trying to appeal to the greatest number of browsers possible, the greatest number of variables within those browsers as possible, the greatest number of user settings as possible on the largest number of devices as possible. You can't do that with pixels. Pixels aren't flexible enough to do that. A web browser is inherently flexible, we're the ones that break it by putting boxes around everything and using pixels to try and control it.
  15. Nice, I was hoping there was a thread started for this.. Gotta say first that this type of redesign/rebuild is no easy task and a fuck load of work for a site this large, kudos to the team for getting it up and going. i'll just reiterate the above, the site is clunky. I've noticed a few things: - random links don't work, seemingly random anyway. - some thumbnail images in the little features around the site sometimes come in at 3 or 4 megabytes, sometimes multiples on a page - can't have a 10meg site on my phone (http://whatdoesmysitecost.com/test/150407_8W_476). - can't get to the author bio pages on the blog/news on my phone - fancy hover on desktop conflicts with touch events on phone. - default font size is still 12px, but I routinely check the site on a monitor bigger than 1900px - increasing the font size doesn't increase width of site (it could) making the site break in spots and awkward to use because it's so skinny. All css units are still in pixels making things difficult. - I routine surf the net in firefox developer browser - 12oz shows up as simply a blank white screen in this browser. - too much trying to be too fancy with all the animations, tooltips, hover interactions, modal windows, sticky headers. Shit man... There's just too much code plain and simple. The browser needs to do too much work, uses up too much memory and too much cpu. - come across a couple pages where the layout was broken - dropdown menus open when you hover over / don't retract on hover out - really annoying to have to click the page to close once open. - a slew of things with galleries and carousels across different devices - tuning off JS visually hides the content, that's a fundamental issue - sticky menus on a phone take up WAY too much screen real estate making the site super annoying, and too hard, to surf around and digest the content. re-thinking the UX on that one could do for an upgrade. - some really funky things going on with modals on my phone. Building my own user styles to override some of the site styles to make some visual/usability things better for me. Hopefully you guys are working on bug fixes and cleanu up and plan to roll some out soon.
  16. not sure what your definition of new is but that piece is October 2012 - not even 4 months old.
