So, I'm fairly new to painting and I only have a few ups. I came to ask you guys for an honest opinion. I live in this small town with nothing, surrounded by larger cities where I can paint with the shit smell in the air, dirt, and constant construction. I came to a conclusion that I wanted to give up letters and move on to something that I feel represents me and has a meaning (not that yours don't mean anything) and thought that I believe in. I wanted to do trees, go around posting apple trees, etc (maybe even plant a few seeds around here and nurture them). That being said, a few days ago I found out there was a painter that goes by "PLANTREES," who is from the same sta…

Winner of the Sydney Film Festival Documentary Audience Award, Martha: A Picture Story is Australian filmmaker Selina Miles’s illuminating look at a remarkable figure: intrepid American photojournalist Martha Cooper, known for her trailblazing documentation of street art and graffiti culture. With disarming curiosity and a razor-sharp eye, Cooper became a champion of the underground. As a lone female intern at National Geographic, staff photographer at the New York Post in the 1970s and in her freelance work, she captured renegade street art, Japanese tattoos, ancient Mayan culture and American gentrification. The New York Times dubbed her 1984 Subway Art book the…

Been into mr choes work for a while now, but only recently got into creating with the sprays. There's a cool video with him quickly painting RZA's portrait where he sketches with spray paint to start off. How does he sketches like that? Is it can control? a certain cap? low pressure can? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBFsP8X35AM What do you guys think of his art anyways? Like it? Hate it?

Ok. I know a lot of you will think this post is silly, but no one is making you reply. I'm almost 21.. and yes, I live at home. It's a problem I will have to confront head on someday.. ANYWAYS.. This morning I awoke to an odd letter on the table. I took my toothpaste with me to my girls the other day and when I came home, I left my bag out. So this morning, my moms goes diggin thru my bag lookin for the toothpaste and finds my mask, tips and paint. Oops. My mom is a pretty hip lady. I told her the truth (that I paint a lot of legal and semi-legal (read: wallofames) spots.. I also told her that was ALL I do (a lil white lie). I don't think she'd be as cool t…

Decent read over on GQ all about Kaws: https://www.gq.com/story/kaws-profile-brian-donnelly-short-circuited-art-world I'm still gutted I didn't take a Kaws poster alteration I saw in London all those years ago. I'd be rich if I sold it now!

This might not be the right section of the web site to post this thread, if not feel free to move it. but i figure this is where it will get the most play, from reliable sources..instead of some youngsters trying to order from mom and dads credit cards. i have placed around 5 orders from bombing science in the past year, for painting jobs. i have emailed these guys and get some automated response. my orders haven't ever gone through! i get one email that tells me the order is being processed. then 6 hours later, get another that says something went wrong. i have changed my address with my bank, made sure there are no restrictions on my account. of course wouldn…

I have never hit a train in my life, I would like some info based on my current situation. Okay, lets say all of the train yards in your area are territories for different crews, and the only one that is open is the "pre-buff yard". Now lets say for fear of getting your ass beat by yard cops, or crew members you avoid these yards. BUT... You happen to know (100000% for sure) the leader of a crew and where he works (he doesn't know that I know about his involvement in the crew) . Would it be a bad idea to ask him about painting there? Or is it one of those "sometimes its better to ask for forgiveness rather than ask for permission" type situations? Mind you, I really…

Start this new topic to talk about graffiti magazines, collecting mags was very popular in the 90's, remember those good times before the internet came and kill the graffiti magazines! i remember the frst time i was involved with graff mags, a guy in my highschool give me a mag called "Intox"(french mag...i'm french) , it was a mag on street culture with lots of graffiti pics, in that mag there an ads about another french mag called "xplicit grafx" , i start subscribing to this mag, it was the really beginning of my collection! Some weeks later, i was visiting London and i buy a hip hop mag called "hip hop connection", at the end of this mag there were an ad section,…

So my homie has a sick paint recipe, it bleeds through buff paint, it's resistant to chemical buff, and leaves a nasty ghost. What type of paint/additives could i use to make paint bleed through buff paint, is it a combination of solvents, a shit ton of break fluid, or just something simple im overlooking.

i realise theres a possiblity of this getting closed but i searched and found nothing like this so maybe if this stayed open it would save countless threads being opened like in the past. okay. im about to put in a order from a company that carries a fair number of caps. my problem is i dont know much about european caps whatsoever. i dug through threads for 2 hours care of the search option to no avail. basically im hoping that this thread can be an area where we can talk about caps that we have never heard of. if i had them id take them out and use them to find out what the differences are but i dont have the money to order all of them to experiment with. so he…

From the Village Voice Dec.24,1980 In Praise Of Graffiti THE FIRE DOWN BELOW By Richard Goldstein. John Lindsay hated graffiti, He vowed to wipe it off the face of the IRT, and allocated $10 million to its obliteration, But the application of vast resources is no match for discipline and determination, as we should have learned in Vietnam. Graffiti survived Lindsay's defoliation plan, and it has thrived on every subsequent attempt to curb its spread. In 1973, there may have been a few hundred ghetto kids writing in a few definable styles. Now thousands call themselves "writers." They come from every social stratum and range in age from nine to 25. Their signat…

Starting this re: a question about leaking cans (and I don't mean diarrhea!) but it can be open to any general info. To my immediate question, does anyone know anything about stored cans emitting vapors? I've always heard people say don't sleep in the same room as your cans for this reason, but does anyone know more on this? Have definitely taken the cap off of cans before and smelled vapors, storage warnings on cans really only covers flammability. Wondering if a bunch of stored cans in an area could have an effect on other areas. As for other info, I really think little is known about the effects of inhaling vapors when painting, other than it's bad shit. I'm …

Story time. I dated a cops daughter, retired cop, I should say. We dated four times, the last being in high school. I was fairly certain I would marry her, but that was Catholic high school for you. We would visit Haight street, she stepped on my Ramones poster, and now I am fairly certain that she is a running coach. She taught me so much about the darker side of the city, much to my own graffiti career's detriment. Discuss at will.

I tag in a minority filled neigborhood that you can say it's kind of ghetto. You can see heaps of people in white tees and wife beaters at mid-night, all grouped together. I've read the Beginning Bible and Spray safe! threads but could find anything if bring a weapon is a good idea. I'm always cautious, I get so nervous that I literally sweat a pound every time I go out bombing with my friends. My friend has a bayonet, but he never brings it! He's afraid that it would make it worse if the popos caught him. My dad has a blackhawk .44 magum but I don't want to mess with it, besides it's heavy. Anyways, should I bring like a butterfly knife with me or something? Do you br…

This idea of this thread is for people to post what older graffiti items they are hunting for. Hopefully it will help people connect and better their collections. A few things I am looking for: Original The Lines Toughest VHS. Old Canadian graffiti photographs. old issues of Xylene magazine. #1-6 of old zine called Invasion.

I am trying to find a photo of a very distinct graffiti or graffiti painting. The style is very similar to Mear one and it could be by Mear one or a very similar artist, but I have sofar failed to find it through Google image search. The picture is divided by a hanging bridge over a creek, to the left a dystopian polluted world with riot police trying to storm over the bridge. To the right green sunny nature with an alternative / rock crowd. In the middle of a bridge stands a long-haired guy with a machete threatening to cut the bridges suspenders.

I've always had a great appreciation for these crews, but have taken a much larger interest after seeing all the photos collectively in the Bench. The thing is I know very little about the crews other than the writers who are in them..... It sort of sucks that graffiti writers don't have history books that they can go back to and trace how crews were formed and how the different styles emerged.... I thought it was great being able to read how BA came about, on their website..... I was hoping that the writers on here who have a grasp on the history of these crews could take the time to tell the story...... What's the difference between the two? Who started them,…

I was roaming around L.A. On foot taking pictures and catching tags. I was headed to an area I've been before to see if there was anything new. A car parks and someone from the car says something to me,it was from a distance, so I approached to see what was going on. When I got there it was to writers from DSK crew, one of em was Avoe, I forget the other ones name though. It was nothing but good vibes. Music , jokes, and painting. They were working on a crew production that has been in progress for months. We talked a little and then I turned the corner down another alley. Staring down this alley there was about 6 different writers doing Pieces and character work. They wer…

Down to the core are there only two types of writers in essence besides straight up taggers (handstyles)? What I mean is that is a writer either more dominate in "Throw Ups" or in Fill-Ins? Sure people can do both styles but once they get to doing murals, pieces, Wildstyle, BlockBusters, Burners, Skyscrapers, Hangovers, etc. their art style is reflected by their comfortability in Filling In or doing it like a Throwie. What I am saying is some prefer to do letters first and then fill them in (Fill-In) while others do the background and color first and then create the border/outline (Throw Ups). How do you feel about this? Should one focus on both or is Throwin' …

Hi there, Our names are Patrick and Kasper. We are two NYU journalism grad students from Rhode Island and Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and we're currently shooting a short documentary on graffiti/street art in NYC. We have already conducted some interviews and shot some work in Bushwick, but we're still looking for more NYC based graffiti writers / street artists who want to talk with us about their work, recent developments in the scene and the commercial value of graffiti. We're specifically looking for someone we can shoot while he or she is painting. Also in case someone does not want to be shot recognizably that still would be of great value to us. We are a …

These are just some rough thoughts on the addiction side to the game… I’ll hopefully be updating this in a timely fashion... Many get into graffiti at a time of their life when they aren't fully "matured" yet, you know teenage issues... hate the world, hate your environment, self whatever. You might be very insecure about yourself, not sure "who you are". You may feel isolated, lonely, weak... (When you are getting up you sure as hell don't feel that way, at least I don't. You feel like you have control over the whole fucking world for however long it takes for you to catch that tag or do a throwup. It's like "BAM" what you gonna do!??!) So when you start writi…
