OK, here we go again, this stuff is worth the hassle of retyping for all you freight aspirants. Before you even consider the mission, lighting, and chillness aspects of your fr8 work you need to know what's up with yards so you don't get killed. I will post a bunch of sub-topics as I think of them. HUMPING. No, not that kind. In the fr8 world humping is a process used to break up trains and sort, or "classify", the individual cars and get them to the right tracks in a yard. Basically, the train is driven backwards a short distance, and they slam on the brakes. At the same moment a brakeman jogs alongside the moving train and throws a lever that uncouples a car or group …

Can someone recommend any good benching spots in or around the Bend, Oregon area? Any info is appreciated. Too lazy to go find them myself, am new to this area and I got other shit going on. Want to find some like-minded peeps out here. Feel free to DM to avoid blowing up your spot. Thank you in advance ~ Wavey

Recently moved from Minneapolis and I've been having fun getting flicks of familiar writers. This box truck by Quasar totally kills it.

Going to crack open the vault on this one and put down some oldies but goodies from the days of film. Starts around 97. Over the years I've caught a lot of firsts, ones that got away, some unfortunate RIPs, and some with good stories behind them. If any of these speak to you in such ways I hope you'll share in a PM or in the thread. I hope new and old heads will appreciate a time when car counts were high, car selection was good, open panels were plenty, some history coming in installments while I have time. Here we go.....

I'm not sure if this topic is cool here or not, but when I'm in the yards, I see tramps occasionally. I see graff artists occasionally. Usually, I don't see ANYBODY, not even yard workers. There is a big difference between Hobos and Tramps. There are really very few hobos left. Modern tramps consider hobos to be the old timers from the steam train days of the Great Depression. There are a few of them still alive. Steam Train Maury Graham in Napoleon, Ohio, is one of the best known hobos in America. (He rode back in the late 1940s and '50s. He's in his eighties now, but he still goes to hobo conventions once in a while. The best known convention is the second wee…

I've been benching for years, when I go check out the layups I take pics but I don't really do anything with the flicks. Since Instagram is limiting in the image quality and facebook is dead to me, I decided to do my part to get this forum back into the swing of things. I just got a new camera so I have energy to get out there and check shit out. It will start with the fresh bench but eventually it will go to the archives. I have about 5+ years of bench waiting. Enjoy!

Some flicks I've taken over the past year or so. Some from the East Coast, some from the West. Unbiased (at least, I try).

Some pictures from the master piece era during the early to mid 1970's. Here are a few examples of some trains that RIFF 170 had painted during the 70's. It was hard not to be blown away by the concepts and next level work by RIFF when it rolled by.

If you're a nerd like me, you watch a ton of railfan videos - and might see some graff along the way. Post videos and who you see in them. Bonus points for screenshots.

This issue obviously doesn't get addressed often enough, because I keep hearing about dumb shit going down and spots getting blown. All the veteran heads can skip this thread, except to add any minor points to think about or incidents where violation of these concepts brought heat to them personally. Anyone fairly new to trains should listen up. I'm going to talk at length about a bunch of related points. THE MAIN ISSUE. The main issue here is longevity of chill spots to paint freights. Any sane writer who is not a malicious shithead must agree that keeping a chill spot to piece freights is a good thing. The primary thing that blows spots is letting people (rail worke…

Pretty sure this says Vaivo. Seen on Tour de France the other day. Seeing as supposedly over 3.5 billion people worldwide watch the tour that's got some eyeballs on it.
