although bob marley gets tons of recognition, he doesnt get enough. seriously, he is a prophet. his lyrics have more of an impact evey time you hear them. his music is the definition of wisdom. people think education comes from schooling.... his ideals make more sense than any shit you learn in school. what would the world be like today if he was still alive and performing???? i hope the CIA all die a slow death. all the government agencies. sometimes its overwhelming to think of some of the shit theyve done. peace to all the aquarius's out there.... one love....

Eh, Bob Marley's music is truly amazing, but his lyrics and ideas are pretty damn basic if you ask me.

NO CANCER, NO DIE good one!

People need to stop playing the Bob Marley Legend album.

Even my old vice-principal in junior high would play it. It's just over-done.

It's been on the top100 ever since it was first released, but it's time to move on!

I'm saying that too many of the poo-poo dreaded, trust-fund-afarians only want to know about the 'Chant down Babylon'-era Marley.

There's a huge body of work from his early rocksteady and riddim days. And to talk about him like a prophet without knowing his many styles is just silly.

(I'm not directing that at you jah, because you seem to know what's up)

so kids...

start here and work forwards.

I gotta agree on the simplicity steez, and to me thats what makes it work. So many people are empty because we're always trying to find that profound sense of meaning (even when we're sober) in every aspect of life. And in alot of those areas ,no matter how hard we look we can't come up with answers. All the Marley music I've heard (I still haven't heard it all) comes from simplistic TRUTH.

theres stuff older than that album. i have one of their ska/rocksteady albums from Studio One. its pretty good but i think his reggea is better. i dont have it in front of me but i like a song about his Mother Leaving or something like that. i think its Where Is My Mother or Where has My Mother Gone.

the music reminds me of The Three Stooges and thats too great.

I was never a fan of his earlier rocksteady stuff. Me and my brother had assloads of rare tapes that are probably still somewhere around the house, this was back when I was 10. Nowadays I almost can't stand listening to Legend or Natural Mystic, cause it's been sooooo played to the ground by my friends who think that's all he did...

Anyways, my problem with his lyrics are the following: Say I am walking down the sidewalk, and I come upon a large red ball. Many singers would rhapsodize about the meaning of the red ball, why it's there, offer crazy and interesting ideas about, etc etc. Bob Marley says "You have a red ball ahead of you." In certain cases, he would add "You should smoke." And people are like HOLY SHIT HE'S RIGHT, THERE IS A RED BALL IN FRONT OF ME!!!

There's no point in singing about "basic" or "simple" ideas if anyone can arrive at them through common sense. The things he talks about are much better dealt with creatively by tons of other authors/songwriters. He gets props for being able to reach a lot of people through music, but I feel that it's sad that people have to realize such basic and obvious things from this guy.

An alarmingly large percent of Bob's fans are kids who got stoned, realized that reggae is amazing to listen to while stoned (mainly cause a lot of it is ABOUT getting stoned), and then noticed this guy was saying things which are true. WOW, HE'S THE CRAZIEST ZANIEST WISEDEST PROPHET EVER!! The fact is, people talk and deal about these things every day, and people are just too numbskulled to notice them unless they're stoned. yeah, thats what a lot of people seem to think. ive heard about as many people say that exact same shit as ive heard "no woman, no cry". the problem isnt the kids who listen to marley because it sounds good when theyre stoned, its the kids like you who think you have to have some sort of right of passage or something to be able to listen to him without being a poser. i grew up on bob marley. since the day i was born i was hearing bob. and i smoked weed long before i ever really started to appreciate it. i always liked it, but i never thought too much of it because it was the shit my parents listened to and none of my friends were into it or something. but that doesnt really give me more of a right to listen to it than any other kid. i agree, a lot of kids listen to it cus they heard it was cool or because it advocates smoking weed.... so what. and the fact that his ideas are so simple is what makes the world so fuckin sad, and one of the things that makes him so fuckin sic. not many people knew what was going on back then. and they still dont. most people in america, whether they feel his music or not, still have no fuckin clue about what hes saying. or they just dont give a fuck. how many of you actually live by these "simple" ideals??? i bet barely any of you. its one thing to believe something, its another thing to act on it. anyway, all his albums are good. if youre sic of legend (which is a definite possibility unless youve had your head in the sand the last 30 years), theres plenty of other good shit: bustin out of trenchtown, rastaman vibration, catch a fire, kaya, millions of compilation albums that are dope..... if you get tired of one thing just rock some shit form a different era for a while, then when you havent heard legend or natural mystic for a long time, itll sound dope as fuck again.

(that may sound like im snapping or being a dick but its not really intentional. no disrespect intended.)

whoever wanted to read the "high times" article....

i have it but im not going to type it all out for you. basically (very basically) it goes like this:

bob marley and tosh (mainly) were saying a lot of stuff the CIA wasnt likin. they probably wouldnt of cared if they didnt become international superstars, but since they were, the whole world was listening to what they were saying. so, before the "one love" peace concert in jamaica (i think it was a day or two before) an assassin went into bobs place and unloaded on him. his friend got shot a couple times and bobs stomach got grazed and he got one in the arm. regardless, he was still going to play the concert. so he went to an undisclosed location utnil the concert to be safe. someone sent him an anonymous gift before the concert; a pair of boots to wear during the concert. when he stuck his foot in the boot he punctured his big toe. when he looked to see what cut his toe, he found a piece of metal lodged in the front of his boot. i guess he didnt think anything of it and went and did the concert. do you get the idea now?.... he had had a lot of heat on him from the CIA. while the elections were going on in jamaica, he was told he would be killed if he came back to jamaica before the they were over. anyway, you can decide if you think that toe prick may have had anything to do with his cancer....

avils, im about to check my mail.

ps. if you dont want to get sick of bob, get some other good reggae. dennis brown, steel pulse, peter tosh, barrington levy, the bantons, burning spear, augustus pablo, gregory isaacs, black uhuru, ziggy and some of his other kids' albums are good, gladiators, humble soul, jimmy cliff, lee perry..... theres a few to check out.

See, like you said, that's what makes the world so sad... the fact that there's realities to life and people just don't see them unless it's being sung to them, packaged in an easily-digestible musical format (among all musical genres, I think reggae would be close to the top of the list of most approachable genres). If most people in america don't realize the things he's talking about, I believe it's because there's a lot of stupid people in America, not because he's particularly brilliant.

A lot of kids listen to it cus they heard it was cool or because it advocates smoking weed.... so what? SO WHAT?!?! It creates a large amount of roaming idiots who think themselves more knowledgeable than others. At the very very least, it annoys the living crap out of me.

I don't think there's any need for a rite of passage or a test to be able to listen to Bob, anyone and everyone should listen to his stuff, it's goddamn amazing. But listening/enjoying someone's music and pronouncing him/her a messianic prophet because you agree so much are two different things. And I've found that most people who do the latter follow strict patterns of marked stoner thinking, which I have very little patience for.

As for the records you mentioned, I got pretty much all of em (Kaya is the personal fave), and I too grew up listening to him (actually, I grew up on Judas Priest and Molly Hatchet, Bob came about when I was around 9-10). It was the official soundtrack (along with Ziggy, Black Uhuru, and Yellowman) to my family's life for a long time, and for that reason I get shivers when I listen to it... so many images flash in my head. I think Legend and NM are still amazing, but it once got to a point where it was unbearable. Trust me, a LOOOT of people began listening to Bob in PR from '93 onwards, and it became, as most things in our culture, treated like a trend along ith surfing. I get fed up when shit like that happens. beer,

dude, its not that his ideas were ingenious, its the way he presented them that makes him so great. he put more emotion into his music than anyone. ALL of his songs are good. some are better than others, but i dont think anyone could name a bob marley song that isnt good (to me of course). the way he put his messages across are what made him a prophet. im not a rasta. i dont especially think that haile selassei was jesus christ. but i believe in what bob says. how is he not a prophet?? your inerpretation of his music will decide what he is to YOU. you compared it to surfing.... to some, surfing is something thats cool; to most people who surf, its life. surfing is amazing. its spiritual. seriously. its the samw with bob. some people listen to it cus its cool, some listen because it helps put things in perspective. it makes sense. it is annoying when someone you dont respect takes something thats personally important to you and uses it for all the wrong reasons... but you never know if that person is going to get teh message after a little while of listening to it. his/her reason for listening could change. although it is annoying, i still say id rather have people listening to it than not. as long as it doesnt turn into a trend for you....

another good one is rebel music. that song "roots" is so fuckin ill. i dont think ive heard it anywhere else but on that album though. pick up the "songs of freedom" set and youll have some shit to listen to for a long time...

YELLOWMAN

and you know who else was burning up my dad's record collection?

----> Third World !

And just as a rider to the mamski/jah disscussion...

Bob Marley makes very clear statments about religion, which is why so many people would dub him a 'prophet'. But simply because he spread the word of Emperor Sellasaie to a new audience, does NOT make him a prophet. It makes him a preacher. Prophets get direct instruction from a higher power, if you believe in such things.

And about the ganja...

It's very easy for people to take a vice, and then fabricate acceptance.

There's way too many 'poo-poo-dread-heads' out there who justify their

pot habit as a part of some spiritual movement. THERE'S NO GOING HALF WAY!

If you want to claim certain aspects of a religion, then dont counteract the others!

I want to shake these fucking kids and yell Rastas dont shave! It's not kosher!

yeah.

"me say, Yellow like cheese... girl you can luv me any way dat you please... ooooh, like cheese..."

Dude was FUCKED UP, I was traumatized when i finally saw a picture of him. But I enjoyed his shit over all other kinds of reggae, it was just so good.

Anyways, jah, I fully agree with everything you said on that last post. I think his genius lies in the transmission of the message, not the message itself. And I have looked and looked for a crappy Bob song and never found one. At some point I thought that it was simply impossible to create a crappy reggae song, but once I found those I realized that Bob simply ruled too hard.

The reason I mentioned surfing was not a comparison, it's just that surfing and listening to reggae became synoymous in the island. People picked up surfboards and grommed the shit out of every beach, and picked up Bob Marley records cause they believed them to be essential to the surfing lifestyle. It disgusted me cause I knew most of those surfboards would be left in some garage corner after a few years. Save for a very select few of extremely dedicated friends, my premonitions held true. So when I say EVERYONE had Legend and NM, and EVERYONE had the SoF box set, I mean EVERYONE (and even while having the box set, people STILL played Legend the most). It was played in all of my friends cars. It was played in retail stores. Like 12 radio stations popped up playing strictly Bob. I was gonna get that box set, but after realizing everyone had it and I was gonna be listening to it anyways, I decided against it. Now that I'm in the US things are different, and I'm giving it serious thought. My musical tastes have shifted to ridiculous things, but reggae still holds a warm spot in my heart.

I always seemed to enjoy Ziggy and others (Yellowman remains my favorite) more than Bob Marley, I guess because it was more carefree and happy. Bob sounded a little sad and solemn sometimes, and it wasn't until later that I realized he was much more serious about what he did. The other day I was coming back from PR on the plane, and I decided to pop the headphones to see what the hell they were playing on the plane stations, and guess what... "Tomorrow People" by Ziggy was just starting... oh man did that feel good... OK, the coffee is kicking in, I gotta get to work. beer,
