Smart Posted March 7, 2002 Share Posted March 7, 2002 'Rap' doesn't mean rhymes, though rhymes are also raps and mc's are rappers... in it's purest sense it means MC's and a band, where the dj, if there is one, is more of another instrument, as opposed to being the sole basis of rhythm and music in the band... with the advent of looping break beats, the dj became more and more the foundation of the music and this led to 'Hip-Hop'... now flash forward to all the kids that didn't even listen to rap or hip hop in the 80's and now it seems like 'Rap' is hip-hop that you don't like, and 'Hip-Hop' is reserved for hip hop that you like, and the underground...
