You see graff mags from around the world and theres only a handful which are half decent, but if u ever had thought that you could do something better than whats infront of eyes.

If you ever had a genuine urge to make one, and had enough pix, writers to interview and stories, how would you go about it?

i'd get David Mack, Jim Mahfood,Shepherd Fairey,Dalek,Kaws and especially Evan Hecox to do the layout and graphic design. Shepherd and Upski would do writing.

It would be a totally multimedia graf zine. Crayons, Watercolors,Inks,Markers,Scanner,Photoshop,Quark.

Nuff said.

and every issue would include a flipbook or sticker or stencil or some other goody

Id keep it with alotta flicks, less words and advertisements, and definately not a "fashion" section. Id include some interviews and stories, but it would mainly be pieces on every page. I like the idea of including stickers or sum type of extra goodie, id include that also.

i'd have alot of pages 100+, flick sections would be divided by pieces, throwups, simples, handstyles, and rollers, uh... there would be 3 or 4 interviews somewhere in there, action flicks included... reader submission stories/editorial section, and a few ads in the back with a lil comic... and it would be bi-monthly. prolly too much work for a monthly, but if i had the right staff i'd make it monthly. but i wouldnt have a mag to begin with but thats the whole point of the question, whatever.

wtf is pagemaker and quark-x press sorry but ive never heard of them.

What would the go be with paper, what so your all saying that u'd make a magazine yourself (printing yourself is what i mean) isnt that a bit dodgey?? I know its easier but wouldnt it be better to do it quicker, easier and more productive buy just sending a cd rom of your layout to a printers???? Photocopies of your own mags is fine, id probably do it myslef if i had a decent camera to take pix.

Whats the matter with having adds in it aswell, it'd get u some extra cash cos they (the advertisers) would have to pay to be in your mag, but theyd be spread out throughout the mag so they dont clutter up space. My idea of a mag -->Maxium pix, burners/walls, panels, some bombs/throwies/tags and a some articles and interviews.

Naked woman, hhmmm yer but its only be half decent if they can shove a spray can, maybe even a hardcore montana, up her twot:crazy:

They are both excellent page layout programs. If anyone out there has a decent mag they must be using one of these.

No... don't even try to make it yourself unless you want it to look like shit. Most pictures do not reproduce well photocopied and color pictures would cost an arm and a leg going to Kinkos or whatever. Sending it to a print shop... they have a press which spits out pages by the second and you really can't beat the quickness and quality of a press. Ulitmately it will end up being less than a quarter of the cost or time if your trying to doing it yourself.

Nothing. Thats how you pay for your printing.

the facts are that you're not going to go to 'press' w/ a small shitty mag.

sounds like you can afford a b/w zine...

no shame in that...just make sure that everything is high contrast...

this limits the flix you can use...but there are some good b/w magazines that are printed...high quality...regular paper...

use a real printer...not kinkos...and you don't need a press...but they'll photocopy it and fold it and staple it for you...

since you don't know what pagemaker and Q are, you'd probably be better off using microsoft publisher to put it together...as you probably already own it...it's glorified microsoft word...

start small...and grow the zine...i reccomend the b/w photocopy version because it's cheap and you don't have to put a lot of leg work into it yourself....and it can be super playful, done by hand for layout if you want...old school typesetting style...

www.nightgallerycabaret.com enter, then go to home, then GAK magazine...it's a highquality monthly b/w mag that looks good...and it's cheap...

look at fwis zine too...same principal, except concentrating on delivering it in pdf format over the web (also something to consider)

I like the mixed media approach and the extra goodies. It should not be all pretty pieces. If thats all you do or have ever done then your not a writer. If you dont know any design programs you can, either cut and paste-which could turn out very kool.(some of my favorite little zines have been all black white in this style) or take a class at community college to learn some basics. Or be real business man and get other heads to do the work.

Although i dont think fashion should be in a graff mag you also have to figure out a way to cover your overhead.

i wouldnt do interviews. as much as its fun to read and pry into peoples lives that not whut graff is about. lots of flics. do spotlights of certain places in each issue. but dont favor one individual writer. graff mags in my opinion should show whuts going on in the rest of the world not to idolize the individual, thats whut the walls are for. make sense? no advertisments unless they are a real graff company not something like jnco just trying to make a profit off of this. give colums about the area and, state whos up but try once again not to idolize anyone. and if you must do an interview just give the person a few pages of there stuff. a lot of mags will have interviews with like 3 flics. i duno i might be wrong but fuck it. im a nobody.:D
