TV Turnoff Week

hey hey...

it's TV Turnoff week 2005!

  • TV Turnoff Week is no ordinary social ritual.
The goal is simple: to shake up routines and get people
questioning the role of TV in their lives.

Sure, it’s a statement against dead-end couch culture.
But it's also about cleaning up the mental environment.
Like our oceans and air, our shared mindscape is littered with pollutants --
distorted news, manipulative ads, violence and top-down culture.

How can we fight back? In years past, we've smashed TVs, postered
schools and offices, aired ads, and performed anti-tube street theater.
The hottest idea this year? TV-B-Gone™ -- a key-chain remote control
capable of turning off virtually any television. It's the ultimate tool for reclaiming our commons.

here's some info from the source: TV Turnoff Week

For those of you who know me (in a online sence anyway)

know that's I'm a very rare TV watcher who lives with a person

who has been known to be infront of the TV for 14 hours a day.

I usually only watch the new Simpsons on Sunday, the Daily show

before I got to bed, and maybe a movie or two durring the week.

(and the UEFA Champions League games if a friend is over)

So it's not that hard to cut TV out of the diet, and I hope everyone

gives it a try, if only for few days.

This annoying little zapper has been turning TV's off all around the globe.

Even though it's a prick move to do, sometimes you just need to escape.

If you're in a sports bar and a UEFA match is on, dont you fucking dare!

But it just seems that it's impossibly to avoid the hypnotic flicker sometimes.

So what are your thought on america's 'Drug of Choice'?

Is it fair to turn off a TV in a public space?

How much TV to you watch daily?

Bonus Fact:

3 hours of TV per day is 21 hours per week. Add a bit more for the weekends

and you've just spent an ENTIRE DAY in front of the bootube.

I'm sorry, but with an entire day wasted, there's no excuse for dirty laundry.

not all TV is stupid.

some of it is really educational and rewarding.

Take for example: NOVA on PBS. That's a top tier show.

and when the show is done, turn off the TV.

You wont find anything better by flipping.

one nation

under God

has turned into

one nation under the influence

of one drug

[chorus:]

Television, the drug of the Nation

Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

(2x)

T.V., it

satellite links

our United States of Unconsciousness

Apathetic therapeutic and extremely addictive

The methadone metronome pumping out

150 channels 24 hours a day

you can flip through all of them

and still there's nothing worth watching

T.V. is the reason why less than 10 per cent of our

Nation reads books daily

Why most people think Central Amerika

means Kansas

Socialism means unamerican

and Apartheid is a new headache remedy

absorbed in it's world it's so hard to find us

It shapes our mind the most

maybe the mother of our Nation

should remind us

that we're sitting too close to...

[Chorus:]

Television, the drug of the Nation

Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

(2x)

T.V. is

the stomping ground for political candidates

Where bears in the woods

are chased by Grecian Formula'd

bald eagles

T.V. is mechanized politic's

remote control over the masses

co-sponsored by environmentally safe gases

watch for the PBS special

It's the perpetuation of the two party system

where image takes precedence over wisdom

Where sound bite politics are served to

the fastfood culture

Where straight teeth in your mouth

are more important than the words

that come out of it

Race baiting is the way to get selected

Willie Horton or

Will he not get elected on...

[Chorus:]

Television, the drug of the Nation

Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

(2x)

T.V., is it the reflector or the director?

Does it imitate us

or do we imitate it

because a child watches 1500 murders before he's

twelve years old and we wonder why we've created

a Jason generation that learns to laugh

rather than to abhor the horror

T.V. is the place where

armchair generals and quarterbacks can

experience first hand

the excitement of warfare

as the theme song is sung in the background

Sugar sweet sitcoms

that leave us with a bad actor taste while

pop stars metamorphosize into soda pop stars

You saw the video

You heard the soundtrack

Well now go buy the soft drink

Well, the onla cola that I support

would be a union C.O.L.A.(Cost Of Living Allowance)

On television

[Chorus:]

Television, the drug of the Nation

Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

(2x)

Back again, "New and improved"

We return to our irregularly programmed schedule

hidden cleverly between heavy breasted

beer and car commercials

CNNESPNABCTNT but mostly B.S.

Where oxymoronic language like

"virtually spotless", "fresh frozen"

"light yet filling" and "military intelligence"

have become standard

T.V. is the place where phrases are redefined

like "recession" to "necessary downturn"

"Crude oil" on a beach to "mousse"

"Civilian death" to "collateral damages"

and being killed by your own Army

is now called "friendly fire"

T.V. is the place where the pursuit

of happiness has become the pursuit of

trivia

Where toothpaste and cars have become

sex objects

Where imagination is sucked out of children

by a cathode ray nipple

T.V. is the only wet nurse

that would create a cripple

[Chorus:]

Television, the drug of the Nation

Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

(4x)

well thanks.

Sometimes there's great TV, and then there's the Jacko trial re-enactments,

the crappy movie marathons on TBS, motorcycle soap operas on Discovery....

and endless reruns of 'Friends' with a never ending loop of canned laughter.

I'm moving in a month and I think I'm going to just go with 'rabbit ears'.

It would be interesting to see what the next presidential election would be like if there were a large organized sabotage campaign aimed at taking out various crucial television broadcast related targets.

Or next time there's a war being sold would work too.

I don't have cable and hardly have time for tv nowadays. i have netflix so if i'm watching tv its usually a film, or tv shows on dvd that i enjoy. i have no problem with just chilling out for a one of those show when i get the chance. its nice to sit and chill. but i don't often veg out in front of the tele.

but as for no tv this week... i remember this no tv week from last year.... its not going to happen, the nba playoffs just started and i will enjoy the few games i can get on network television.

(TV party tonight, TV party tonight, TV party tonight, TV party tonight)

We're gonna have a TV party tonight (All right)

We're gonna have a TV party all right (Tonight)

(We've got nothing better to do, than watch TV and have a couple of brews)

Everybody's gonna hang out here tonight (All right)

We'll pass out on the couch all right (Tonight)

(We've got nothing better to do, than watch TV and have a couple of brews)

(Don't talk about anything else, we don't wanna know)

(We're dedicated to our favorite shows)

That's Incredible, Hill Street Blues, Dallas, Fridays

We sit glued to the TV set all night (And every night)

Why go into the outside world at all (Its such a fright)

(We've got nothing better to do, than watch TV and have a couple of brews)

TV really shows what its like out there (Its a scare)

You can go out if you want (We wouldn't dare)

(We've got nothing better to do, than watch TV and have a couple of brews)

(Don't talk about anything else, we don't wanna know)

(We're dedicated to our favorite shows)

Saturday Night Live, Monday night football, Jeffersons, Vegas

I wouldn't be without my TV for a day (Or even a minute)

Don't even bother to use my brain any more (There's nothing left in it)

(We've got nothing better to do, than watch TV and have a couple of brews)

Hey wait a minute, my TV doesn't work (Its broken)

What are we gonna do tonight, this isn't fair (We're hurting)

(We've got nothing better to do, than watch TV and have a couple of brews)

(What're we gonna talk about, I don't know)

(We're gonna miss our favorite shows)

No That's Incredible, no Monday night football, no Jeffersons, no Fridays

(No TV party tonight)

Guest westy

I didn't give a fuck about tv up until last week when I got free cable hooked up......So needless to say (cartoon network) I'm watching too much now, but I go through phases. Adbusters is badass. Forgot about it till this thread. Thanks.
