Johns' record company EMI announced the pair got engaged shortly before Christmas. An EMI spokesman said the couple were currently on vacation in Australia. They had not yet set a date for the wedding, he added on condition of anonymity. Imbruglia, 27, became a household name in Australia and Britain as a teen star on the soap opera "Neighbours." She later moved to London and in 1998 released her debut album, "Left of the Middle," with the hit single, "Torn." Imbruglia was voted best new artist at the MTV Video Music Awards that year. Her second album, "White Lilies Island," was released in 2002. Johns was seen shopping for a ring In the past Imbruglia, who is also the face of cosmetic company Loreal, has been romantically linked to "Friends" star David Schwimmer. Johns, 23, is the front man for Australian grunge-rock outfit Silverchair, whose hits include "The Greatest View." They won best group at the 2002 Australian Record Industry Awards. The pair, who married near Port Douglas on New Year's Eve in 2003, cited distance and career demands for their decision to split. "While we are very sad that our marriage has ended, we want to make it clear that our parting is amicable and we remain friends," the pair said in a joint statement last night. "This mutual decision has not been taken lightly or quickly. "However, our career demands and our lives in different parts of the world have brought us to the point where unfortunately this difficult decision was necessary for both of us. We have simply grown apart through not being able to spend enough time together." Rumours of a split surfaced early this week when they did not spend their New Years' Eve anniversary together. Imbruglia, who launched the David Jones end-of-year sales on Boxing Day, left Australia on January 2. The rock star and pop princess had weathered constant speculation about the state of their marriage, with many asserting that Imbruglia being based in London and Johns in Sydney and Newcastle would drive them apart. While in the UK, Imbruglia has often been photographed at A-list events, including attending a party with Little Britain star David Walliams. Johns, meanwhile, has been concentrating on his music career, including launching a successful collaboration with musician Paul Mac. Both Johns, 28, and Imbruglia, 32, have publicly joked about -- and dismissed -- the unsubstantiated rumours about Johns' sexuality. Many music industry types speculated their marriage was on the rocks when Johns did not thank his wife during the band's several acceptance speeches at the ARIA awards in late October. Imbruglia did not attend, with a representative saying she had to remain on the Adelaide set of independent Australian film Elise. But only weeks before, they were backstage after one of the band's Across The Great Divide concerts in Melbourne, "holding hands and giggling like school kids", according to one observer. Imbruglia and Johns first met backstage at a Silverchair gig in London but sparks flew at an ARIA awards after-party at the Gazebo Hotel in 1999. When Johns was crippled with reactive arthritis in 2002 as he launched the Diorama album, Imbruglia took time out from shooting her feature film role in Johnny English to help nurse him back to health. Both committed to making their marriage work despite pursuing individual careers and interests.
