I always liked them but I was never a big fan.

Recently I bought 70 cds from some homeless dude, it had VU, White/Light White Heat, and the Self Titled CD. I have not stopped listening to this shit since.

Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground (Sometimes Nico) are geniouses.

I'm listening to The Gift right now, which reminds me of that Gorrilaz thing where they had someone read a story about the Monkey, except Lou Reed wrote it and it's way better.

DISCUSS HOW GREAT THE VELVET UNDERGROUND IS AND HATE ON MY NON-L333TNESS.

My advice is to download any and all pre-1980 Lou Reed/ Velvet Underground that you can, and listen to it lots. You could argue that they're not the best rock band of all time (you'd be wrong), but it is pretty much universally accepted that they are the most influential.

I'd go for VU, White Light/White Heat, Loaded, and Rock and Roll Heart for starters.
