Yes, but knowing a few phrases will help. It's possible to get around Japan with only English. Most people speak SOME English, some speak it great, and some don't speak it at all. Other places I recommend if you only speak English are Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore. English is widely spoken in those three nations and Singapore is nothing but a diverse mix of Asians but English is their first language. Beautiful women and very clean and safe there too.
