DETO
Release Date: Unknown; that will depend upon when Matt Groening and crew decide to call it quits on their last season, and move to the big screen; the 2001-2002 season will be #13, and the stars are signed until season #15 (2003-2004); so... it's possible one could guess that would mean a 2005 or 2006 release (allowing for a year or two after the end of the the series for the film to be made), but that's just a guess. Note that if the series is renewed further, 2010 is just as likely! Type of Animation: Traditional; a few years back, Corona posted a very popular April Fool's Day joke page that described a live-action movie project, but that's not going to happen. When The Simpsons come to movies, they'll be the animated characters you already know. Distributor: 20th Century Fox Production Company: Gracie Films Cast (Voice): Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson), Julie Kavner (Marge Simpson), Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson), Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson), Hank Azaria (many characters), Harry Shearer (many characters) (note: each of these actors, except Yeardley Smith, voice several other characters as well; see IMDb listing for more); expect plenty of celebrity guest voices as well; but, heck, some of them might not even be celebrities yet...! (as of 7/3/01) Cast Notes: Michael Fleming of Variety reported on 5/15/01 that the six central voice stars signed on for two feature films when they renewed their contracts for more seasons. It's very likely that other voice cast will also make the transition. See this IMDb listing for the regular cast list, and this IMDb listing for guest appearances. As of 7/3/01, there is no word which specific characters will make it to the feature film, although I have a feeling many will (even if it's just "made-for-DVD" cameos, like the TV show often has) Director: Not announced yet. Screenwriter: Unknown; it will surely be writers from the show, probably several. Matt Groening will probably be one of them. Based Upon: The long-running (since 1989), award-winning animated comedy series on FOX, created by Matt Groening (of the Life is Hell comic strips), which have spawned music albums, cereal, parade balloons, t-shirts, you-name-it. Sequel Note: The cast's new contracts include not just this film, and the next few seasons, but a second film as well. Joke Note: Back in March, 2001, while talking to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Cindy Pearlman, exec. producer David Mirkin joked that he'd like to see "lots of Simpson sex." He was kidding. Unfortunately, like people on the Internet are prone to do, this quote was taken out of context and spread around like gospel. Filming: There is no animation start date for this project, and there probably won't be until the animated TV series comes to its conclusion, years from now. Premise: 7/03/01 - Absolutely no details have been revealed about what this film could be about. Simpsons Movie. Why inevitable? In a time when many animated TV shows (Pokemon, South Park, Recess, etc.) make the transition to film after just a few years of success, The Simpsons is the towering grand-daddy of TV comedy (animated or otherwise). Its lifetimes doubles or triples other shows, and yet, it never made the quick scramble for big screen bucks. It will, that we now know is all but certain, but the very crucial detail there is that it won't happen until the TV series comes to a point where Matt Groening and crew are ready to call it quits, and there's no sign that's happening soon. The Simpsons at 12 is just as funny, clever and original as it was at 4 (yes, there are occasional hiccups, but at its worst, The Simpsons is still one of the best TV shows). The Simpsons is a TV show that works on so many levels, it's mind-boggling to consider. First of all, it is wicked satire that manages to cram dozens of references and subjects into every week, challenging the audience to keep up. It works on another level, though, as broad comedy, which means "kids like it too." Even if you don't get *all* of the jokes (and admittedly, I don't either), there are probably a few in each episode that you do get that surprise you for even being there. I remember the first time I saw a Twin Peaks joke on the show (there have been a few). I thought "geez; it's been a few years since the show went off... does America still remember TP?" The point was that the Simpsons writers understand how to insert "in jokes" for all sorts of "fans", not just fans of the show, I mean fans of anything. Yes, the show's politics are left-leaning, but there's a good dose of anti-PC jabs here and there too. The Simpsons, I think, accomplishes a rare thing by being animated. No idea is too big or impossible for them to imagine, no joke or image impossible to make. Live-action satire is limited to what actors and crew can accomplish on a limited budget, but The Simpsons, because it *is* animated, can do anything for a joke. Being "animated" hasn't always been easy for the show. It has historically been snubbed in the "Best Comedy" Emmy's category, victim to prejudices that (I suspect) animation is "for kids", or "not a real show." Maybe that's what you get for being too original, too groundbreaking... some people just don't get it. The audience certainly does. Although not in the top 20, The Simpsons' ratings stay comfortably high season after season, giving FOX a reliable Sunday night opener (when it's not delayed by football). As a feature film, the sky appears to be the limit here. First of all, you have to remember that this film is probably years and years from happening. I'm writing this in 2001, with pretty high confidence that the TV show is going to last until at least 2004. Then, after they wrap that last episode (which they're working on right up until release), Gracie Films will have at least a year, maybe two or three, to work on this project. That's presuming the script is anywhere near ready by the time the series ends. With the writers working on the TV show every year, exclusively, they're going to be pressed to find time to develop this film on the side. So... the movies may be a very different environment by the time The Simpsons Movie hits screens. The earliest possible year would probably be 2005, the year of Fox's Star Wars Episode III. I've held off on posting this page (until now, 7/3/01), because I knew this film was so far away, but the "buzz" is already starting to build, as fans, starving for over 10 years for this film, continue to wonder what the film might be like. What wacky adventures can Matt Groening take the Simpsons on in 90+ minutes that are impossible in mere 30 minute (less with ads) episodes?
