I'm cold turkey on soda or soft drink right now, not sure what you call that in the UK.

I had withdrawals over the last three days.

I call soda like coke and lemonade just soft drinks
If I drink soft drinks I tend to drink ting or Lipton ice tea

I'm on some excessive caffeine shit myself, about 8 cups of coffee in the morning (1 or 2 very large cups + a thermos full, but for measuring purposes...), then 2 more large cups worth of tea later on in the day. No sugar, or milk products go into them though so at least I've got that going for me.

    Pork But.jpg

Wifey and I just got this slow cooker from amazon yesterday. First thing we made was a Pork Shoulder aka "Pork Boston But". I picked it up from the Tompkins Square Park's farmers market last night on the way home. Wifey hooked it up overnight last night and god damn is this shit good. Planning on going to a very low carb, zero wheat, zero sugar diet over the next week or two as an experiment. I'm basically going all meat, with lettuce wraps, the only carbs (if any) will come from quinoa, or rice.

Most anyone who knows me, knows I can be cool sometimes, but can cancel out that coolness by acting like a complete dick at other times. I'm not really ashamed to say I've struggled with anger management issues for as long as I can remember. A large factor of that might stem from traumatic brain injury, or TBI for short. After a year in therapy, and performing cognitive exercises I've found some relief from these anger management issues, and have it much more under control now. This has allowed some very significant personal & professional success.

I still have "moods" that give me violent images when I perceive even an unintentional slight. Sort of works like when you see a tittie that might pop out of a dress, and you can't stop thinking about it, with vivid pornographic scenerios playing out in your mind. The violent scenarios in my mind are sometimes just as hard to shake off. Sometimes I literally see myself knocking people out that step in my path as I'm walking down a crowded sidewalk. I tense up, sometimes even ball up my fist, it's very stressful. I noticed some relief when I ate a big leftover ham, and unintentionally cut carbs for weight loss purposes after Thanksgiving. Hopefully that relief wasn't a fluke, and coupled with my cognitive exercises I can achieve some relief.

@Mercer Damn dude, got a recipe for that slow cooked pork shoulder? Whats special about that slow cooker beyond one of those sub $12 crock pots?

Congrats on all the rest. I remember that one time me, you and Julio had a screaming match at the 12oz studio... LOL! Still good times, but glad you got a handle on that. Seems like you're in a good place. Got to come visit me one of these days.

I hear you on the anger management stuff, mercer. I came back from Afghanistan with a whole lot that I couldn't direct anywhere good. Eventually diagnosed with PTSD, but I wonder if there's other shit related to sleep deprivation involved. I went to group therapy for a couple of years but didn't really feel like I was gaining any control, got divorced with that at the core of our problems. Six years on I've calmed down a lot, but have that same violence porn piece sneaks in every once in a while and I can't focus on anything but that.

I got slighted by my new boss (officially employed through a staffing agency, he told me to tell the guys I work for thanks for the xmas bonus, when I didn't get any bonus his response was "you weren't on the list of names getting the bonus that is why you aren't getting it." No "i'm sorry, I shouldn't have included you in that conversation about the bonus." no "my bad" no nothing. All I could think about was shoving a fucking screwdriver in his guts for a few hours. really hard to be productive...)

I've never looked at diet being related to all that.

Surprised portion control has not been mentioned. A lot served these days is size large, or extra large if you're in the Midwest! I used to just inhale everything on my plate like Homer Simpson... these days I'm fine to eat half and take half to go for later or whatever.

On diet/anger, I wouldn't hold out too much on one solving the other. "Noticed some relief when I ate a big leftover ham..." lol, that's not anger soothed, that's "The Itis" you get from eating too much pork product and needing a nap.

Not sound like a pussy, but taking magnesium supplements and using lavender oil on my pillows has worked freakin wonders for my sleep patterns. My mom used to do shit like that for me after college cause I could fall asleep until the sun came up and slept in 1.5 hour increments until just getting up. Magnesium is very hard to replace naturally via diet. It also happens to get depleted quickly via stress. It's properties help regulate mood and depression. Thing is your body adapts to intake quickly, so to keep it effective you want to take it for a few days in gradually increasing doses and then stop for a week or two before cycling back.

You can take magnesium as a pill (usually as magnesium citrate and I've seen various drink powders. I've taken both and see them work with differing impact at different times. For the powder form, here's one that's been great for me: https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Vita...ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1516385228&sr=8-6

Likewise, try the lavender oil thing. Just a dab off your finger on each side of your pillow before going to bed. Smells like sleeping at a new chicks house, but shit works. Here's a quality one: https://www.amazon.com/Radha-Beauty...ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1516385374&sr=8-3

My experience is that portion control doesn't matter when you eat clean. I don't count calories in any way, only carbs. Target is 25g a day unless I'm being strict, in which case I keep it as far under 10g as I can. Beyond that I eat anytime I want and as much as I want. These last 6 or 7 weeks I'm down 20+ pounds despite eating anytime I want with no thought to portions.

I do think portions matter, but believe its more in regards to high carb and processed foods since those have an affect of not satiating your hunger the way fat and protein does. Since I'm not taking in carbs, I don't think about portions at all.

I'm going to have to look into that pressure cooker thing. Personally my favorite method to cook is using an offset smoker I had built out in Oklahoma a while back. Weighs like 2000 pounds and when used properly makes everything taste amazing. Since moving to NW Montana, I've had a real tough time finding good smoking woods (believe it or not) so havent been able to use it as much. Also the altitude and cold have totally thrown me off, so relearning what works here. Anyhow, the smoker is the opposite of what I generally need since I want to set and forget and have a quality meal ready to go at about the right time each evening. Made a decent beef stew in the crock pot the other night that was super easy. Definitely going to look into the pressure cooker thing, as well as that book.

Anyone got any particularly good Keto / Paleo recipes to share?

Wifey is really into cooking, all the recipes reside with her. Our apartment is overflowing with cookbooks RN, and she pretty much has designer kitchen everything. She'd never let me funk up the kitchen collection with something practical like a $12 crock pot lol.

I think the shouting match was with Scott. Back then I would have never jeopardized any comradery with someone who had weed as gourmet as Julio's. lol

I'd really like to come through, unfortunately vacation time this year is already booked. If things go well, I should be out west this Fall/Winter when my vacation re-up hits.

Once again. there's a Joe Rogan Podcast that deals specifically with combat veterans with PTSD and Diet. Hate to keep posting JRE podcasts, but his podcast is pretty informative on so many relevant subjects in this thread.

I related so hard to dude's description of his anger management problem in this podcast, it convinced me to give changing my diet a try, at least to enhance some of the other things I'm trying. I've been on it for a week now, and haven't noticed any changes in brain chemistry yet. Getting way more results from exercise TBH. Either way, hope you can get some relief. I'm still struggling against it, but at least enjoying the fight now so to speak.

I find it very fucking interesting that the two top things partying around in my brain just happen to be at the top of the thread zone......33 was an insanely stressful year for me and I’ve finally reached a point where enough is enough. Had to buy that next pants size.... Now shit is real. Definitely trying to make some changes.
