effyoo
in case you never heard of this project, read this Entertainment Opening 'The Gates' of Central Park February 13, 2005 BY WYNNE DELACOMA Fine Arts Critic If all goes according to plan, and plans have been in the works for more than 26 years, tens of thousands of people will stroll the paths of New York's Central Park over the next two weeks, winter weather notwithstanding. They will go there to bask in the golden glow of 7,500, 16-foot-tall orange vinyl gates hung with 1 million feet of saffron-tinted rip-stop nylon. The latest project of the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, "The Gates," opened Saturday morning. Cocoons at the top of each gate unleashed 7-foot curtains like suddenly dropped venetian blinds. Along 23 miles of Central Park's pedestrian paths, spaced approximately 12 feet apart, the gates and their wind-blown curtains "will be a golden ceiling creating warm shadows'' for pedestrians, according to the artists' statement. Viewed from buildings surrounding the park, "'The Gates' will seem like a golden river appearing and disappearing through bare branches of the trees ...'' the others in the 'huge fucking picture' series: The World At Night Paris By Night (picture is broken though)

anonymity1
I hate how some artists just try to be more extreme than the next person. Its like, who can waste the most fabric, or use the most clay or who can paint the biggest canvas. Get creative you fucking wasteful bastards. heavyLox
This thing is awesome and many of you are really missing the boat. I have no problem with tryin to get something and then not liking it, but it seems like a lot of you dont even give it a second thought before you dissmiss it as crap. This has little to do with Extreme amounts of fabric, cause any jack ass who can raise enough doe can do that. However seeing a space you see all the time, in a new way based on a new element being intorduced into it can be really effective, and may be done by anyone, But its not, its dopne by Christo. They have been wanting to do something in the park for going on 30 years. thats a fucking long time to be waiting in the cut for the right time to make it happen. It took almost as long to wrap the house of parlament (it may not have been the house of parlament) in germany. Not to mention ALL the money was raised by selling drawings, and prints of drawings; This guy can sell drawings like they are toilet paper. I am impressed.
