the adware/spyware thread

test pattern

Recommended Posts

there have been a few threads on this. i'm sick of it, though, and i ask thee, users of 12oz, to step forth in nobility and honor! bringeth thy answers to me.

a lot of times, my computer just gets FUCKED with spyware. i believe it is because my little brother looks at porn every day on my computer. this shit pisses me off to no end. anyway, i usually just format and the problem is solved. last week, i did a gnarly format. i set it up nice, kept only the essentials, and downloaded drivers, players, etc. within 45 minutes of just formatting, i already have some again.

i use ad aware to scan and delete tracking cookies that seem to keep popping back up, but that's about all it will delete. there are two folders in my program files directory that i can't delete because they're in use by another program. one is "microsoft frontpage" and the other is "xerox." i looked in my favorites today, and there are about 7 things added in there called stuff like "Free XXX Online!" and similar shit.

any ideas on completely ridding myself of this shit and keeping it that way?

its def. because of ur little bro looking at porn. however, it should of dissapeared when u reformatted... maybe instead of reformatting, u just reinstalled ur os. my suggestion if it keeps getting bombarded with spyware and all that jazz, is to reformat again, and delete the partion this time, and create a new, and then go from there.... but thats just my 2 cents. other wise, kick ur bro's ass, and cripple his hands from future "dates" with porno.

also, mozilla (firefox) is a really good webrowser, that will solve a lot of ur adware/spyware problems...

1. ad-aware 6......works like magic...its a free download from the internet

2. if you have internet explorer, you need to delete your cookies on the regular! (go to tools, then internet options)

3. also delete temp internet files, (go to tools, then internet options)

4. do this on the reg and run a spyware program like ad-aware...

5. download a pop up blocker like google toolbar....this is a great popup blocker....(recommended by 12ozers...it works!)

6. DONT LOOK AT SHADEY PORN SITES, AND DONT LET YOUR BROTHER ON THE COMPUTER.

YES, I KNOW THIS PROBLEM...

I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM ON OLD COMPUTERS BUT WHEN I GOT MY NEW LAPTOP I "SAFEGUARDED" EVERYTHING BEFORE IT WAS INFECTED...

FOR THAT PROBLEM, I CAN ONLY TELL YOUO TO TAKE IT TO A PRO..

BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THAT CAN BE DONE.

I think the only surefire way to prevent this is to not visit sketchy sites. But you can prevent alot of this crap by using adaware like they said.... basically everything they said and mozilla.... get a firewall if you don't have one. That prevents alot of unwanted connections. I also use a local port scanner so I know what ports I have open. Bout to hook up a trojan scanner. I got an anonymous surfer as well so I can use anonymous proxies.

Holla at me if you want further details.

if you use ie... go into the tools > internet options menu, and then the advanced tab... disable any sort of automatic install.

also, go into the privacy tab and choose at least medium high setting... or, even better, do a custom setting, by clicking on the advanced button and over ride automatic cookie handling; block third party cookies and get prompted for first party cookies... this way, if it's a site that iyou know you don't need cookies (like a porn site), a window pops up and asks you if you want to accept.. if you say no, you'll never be bothered w/ that site again.... but make sure you don't block a site you want (like 12 oz), or you'll have to go into the edit button int he privacy tab and accept the cookie.

also, if you get a pirated version of ad aware, you can get ad-watch, which will prompt you if any thing tries to install spyware on your system.

all this might seem like a lot of effort, but it really only takes like 5-10 minutes.

You should download this program called Spybot Search And Destroy. It's basically a companion to ad-aware, but for spyware and other things that ad-aware misses. It goes through your hard drive and finds all the shit that gets put on deletes it.

You can download it here: http://download.com.com/3001-8022-10289035.html

All the protection in the world can't stop your brother from looking at pr0n though, you should just revoke his living priviliges next time you find a sticky keyboard.

this is one of the reasons i am glad i use a mac... never have to deal with any of this shit...

i was at my mom's on sunday, and tried to use my little brother's computer...

as soon as i open IE, it gets so flooded with pop up and the like that it was damn near unusable...

downloaded adaware, ran it, and it took an hour or so, but in the end it deleted 1137 files or programs or whatever...

shit was ridiculous...
