Surf/Garage/Psych Awesome Thread Full of Great

I expect participation from Gnarly and Casek in the least.

I am going to focus on 90's revival because that is the majority of what I listen to. Hopefully someone here is a little more into the 60's stuff, I've just never had the stamina to wade through the plethora of bands from then, and then trying to find the records (and the money) just seems like a really tall order that I have yet to feel like dealing with.

First up is The Mummies.

mummiespic.jpg

The Kings of Budget Rock.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mummies

excerpt:

The Mummies are especially known for their matching, tattered mummy costumes they wore on stage and their impertinent and insulting attitude that they brought with them.[2] They created and promoted the concept of 'Budget Rock', which rejected professionalism and star status in favor of a simplified do-it-yourself aesthetic.[3] As part of this concept they performed and recorded only on outdated and often damaged equipment. For a tour vehicle they used a garishly painted 1963 Pontiac ambulance. As part of their lo-fi manifesto, they released their music only on vinyl for many years, allowing 'official' CD format releases only in the 2000s.

Pretty much my favorite band of all time. I have never seen them live (they broke up when I was 9) and I was out of town for their surprise reunion show last year (faggots)

Recommended album: everything. everything. everything.

Second, The Royal Pendletons

royalpendletonssmokincover.gif

[no official website that I could find in my brief search]

[no wiki]

Out of New Orleans. Great rock and roll. I am actually not even certain if they are still together, I doubt it (seeing as how most of the bands I listen to stay together for no longer than a couple years)

Recommended album: Oh Yeah, Baby!

Third, The Church Keys

312732.jpg

The band that formed from several other awesome bands. Only ever put out 1 album but damn is it good. Not a lot on these guys seeing as how they were around for a very short time.

Unfortunately all I can find is this, which is nowhere near their usual energy. But they weren't around for long enough to have a plethora of videos of them on the interneck.

Recommended album: Work With It!!

*From what I recall they do have a website, it is a geocities or lycos website though and it is terrible.

I'll do more tomorrow, this thread has been waiting for about 2 hours now to be posted. I got side tracked and started ordering records and now it is time to go to the bar.

Re: Motherfuckin' Surf/Garage/Psych Awesome Thread Full of Great

Iloveboxcars, i was going to let you start this and I'm glad you did.

Being that I'm from Memphis, i've grown up on Rock and Roll. That sounds cliche', but I'm surrounded by that and blues. It's unavoidable. I'll probably be focusing on more 00 garage / punk and some 80's - 90's garage, but probably wont be hitting anything prior to that. I'll leave it up to boxcars and casek to contribute that and maybe give me a more solid foundation in the roots of garage. Anyhow.... with all that said-

Oh, thanks for that Fatso Jetson. I've heard the name but I never bothered to check them out.

Gnarly already did Jack Oblivian but I'm going to go ahead and do The Oblivians as planned anyway.

The Oblivians

FinalSolutionsGonerfest1.jpg

The Oblivians were an American garage punk power trio that existed from 1993 to 1998. In the 1990s, their blues-infused brand of bravado, crudely-recorded punk rock made them one of the most popular and prominent bands within the underground garage rock scene.

Formed in Memphis, Tennessee, the band consisted of three members -- Greg Cartwright, Jack Yarber, and Eric Friedl -- who alternated between instruments on stage and in the studio, each member serving as vocalist, guitarist, and drummer, in turn.

Los Cincos

I don't know anything about this band and do not feel like finding anything out, but I like their sound.

http://www.myspace.com/loscincos

Immortal Lee County Killers

366374.jpg

The Immortal Lee County Killers has been called "Truly the place where punk meets the blues."Weise often referred to punk blues as the "fucked up blues" and the "real punk blues". Taking influence from Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Pussy Galore, MC5, Skip James, Bad Brains and The Gun Club, ILCK approached the punk blues genre with reverence and originality, lending credibility to a genre that had sometimes been previously employed as a musically ironic post-punk and garage rock aesthetic. They did not take influence from blues-rock, preferring the older Delta blues and Chicago blues styles

The Phantom Surfers

PhantomSurfers_2_thumb.jpg

Also contained members of The Mummies at certain times.

Aside from releases this is the only information on their wiki:

The Phantom Surfers are a surf rock band formed in 1988.

more to come.

Re: Motherfuckin' Surf/Garage/Psych Awesome Thread Full of Great

I have a lot of this stuff, so I'm not really sure where to begin.

Black Diamond Heavies are good. They're about as lo-fi as it gets. And I liked the first two Black Keys albums. The Make-Up was good, Ian Svenonius has always been into lo-fi.

I'll have to look through my compilations and see what's good.

"In 1967, a bunch of US and Argentinean kids recorded a magical album which has remained unknown for many years due to its extreme rarity, with less than a handful known copies to exist.

Released in 1968 in Argentina by a label called Phonexa, the Schibbinz album could be regarded as the ultimate teen garage folk-rock album ever."

this thread just blew my mind. been kinda leaning towards this stuff lately, but haven't taken the time to do any homework. all this stuff posted totally kicks ass.

only thing I can contribute is this track by fluffy lumbers. I don't think they even have an album yet or anything though.

Retainers - LP

Ripping fast, lo-fi, drunken, stoned garage punk. These guys put on one of the best shows in Minneapolis. Good people too.

sinksstepcover.jpg?t=1261103703

Sinks - ST EP

Another from Minneapolis. Bass player from the Retainers on guitar and vocals. In the same vein as Retainers, but even more lo-fi. This one was recorded live on 2track.

sinksnomoneycoverresized.jpg

Sinks - No Money 7"

Recorded live on 4track.

51NT10KGMEL._SS500_.jpg

Jay Reatard - Blood Visions

Pretty poppy, especially compared to sinks and Retainers. I'd still consider it garage punk, it's just catchy as hell. Still lo-fi and reverbed out, even though it's clearly recorded well.

l_a0f12f1c715cb1868d18ccf33f525ab4.jpg

Fag Cop - I'm Fucking Dead 7"

This is the scummiest, noisiest, most fuzzed out, stupidly lo-fi garage punk (kinda). I doubt anyone is going to be into this at all, but i could see 1 or 2 of you possibly loving it. It's probably more of noise rock, but its pretty much all garage punk riffs and solos underneath all the noise and feedback, some of which are quite catchy.

"Six tracks of mean-spirited super-shitty boom-box-recorded ear-piercing pinned-in-the-red ridiculousness."

The Sleaze - Smokin' Fuckin' Cigs

Moronic, snotty garage punk from Minneapolis. The singer has what might be the most obnoxious voice ever, and there is a one note solo, but the A side is still retardedly catchy and gets stuck in my head for days. Its so obnoxious and basic that it's great. The Bside track is kinda weird.
