So, I didn't get in to art college.........

I don't know what to do. I'm so upset, and I can't do anything about it, except put a stupid little post on the internet. How ineffectual is that exactly? A large part of how I fucking see my life and self just fucking died, and its epitaph is a pointless little post. A nice metaphor for the rest of my existance. I want to die

there are three art colleges. One is too far way. the other also rejected me.

I did very well in my Leaving Cert, I can go to just about any school I want - to do just about any course. Except the art colleges - I had to prove I was good at art for them. Clearly I failed

i feel like ive been kicked in the stomach

i love how you word things...

you sure are an effective writer... *hint* *hint*

or just sit back and keep telling yourself "ehh im just ahead of my time, their too feeble to understand me"

nah seriously tho its cool, i didnt go to college so i can get my certifications for building computers an everything, the test cost 300 dollars and i failed it twice, i spent 2,500 on courses and w00t there went 3100 dollars of the money i earned picking cigarette butts up outta the car parkinglot in front of a major route so i was seen by like millions of cars a day. i was only getting paid at like 7 something an hour so that money was like 19 years of work... get your shit together and try again i guess...

my cousin got into the new york college of arts or some shit by drawing a sheet on a clothsline blowing in the wind while people were getting rejected doing their rendition of famous art pieces and shit who woulda thought?

im about to take a shower and start studying again, probably to only spend 300 more dollars to be told im a failure again. i figure if i hit 6 or 7 times ill just get certified  or become homeless trying

See thats just it. I'm expected to succeed. By everyone - My family, my girlfriend and my friends all believe that. Some time in the past a random teacher told my parents that I was intelligent and gifted. And like all parents they took it to heart and ignored all the evidence to the contrary.

And they all believe it with such enthusiasm. Even my friends, who should be begrudging and sketptical about such things, believe that I can turn my hand to anything. And it just isn't true.

Kudos to you for paying your way. You can hold your head up regardless of what you achieve in tests - you are acing the hard part.

real job doesn't = desk job. there are more options open than sitting behind a computer. as you said, your leaving cert kicked ass, you have your pick of what you want to do (well, except art college). but seriously. you don't need an A at school to mean your are good at art or whatever.

I know. I should have been a bit clearer about my meaning.

I refuse to attend a course based on it's job prospects. I want to attend a course that I feel will better myself as a human being. For me, that does not include buisness, computers, IT-anything or any of those airy-fairy "communications" courses

(now this is not meant to piss on other people's courses. I don't feel that these would better *me* as a person.)

who the fuck says your gonna be broke and homeless when u get out of art schooL? i always hear that ignorant bullshit. i know plenty of people that get out of art school and are very happy with their lives.

bodice...have u thought about coming to the states for art school? your more likely to be accepted here since you'd be an international student. try looking into SCAD (savannah college of art and design) its a great school.

If your doing art for your self, enjoying what YOU do then why be bothered if an establishment doesn't think your work is great? A lot of Art schools judge work on the "Principals" of art, not just the aethstetics which is more over where people put most of there time and effort.

I can understand you being upset with rejection from the colleges but what was it that you were going there for anyway?

Art doesn't come from text books. I can Understand that with a teachers help you may be able to work better with certain mediums, and certainty a degree in art does help you gain recognition a bit quicker but if your work is good and more importantly its what you enjoy doing im sure it will be noticed eventually.

So you wont get into college for art, is there nothing else you enjoy that u cant look at as a major and take art classes also in your curriculum? As hinted earlier you are a good writer......

there are no courses with art in the curriculum in any serious way. I agree with your take on college's role in "real" art, however I cannot teach myself to bronze cast etc.

oddly enough, your arguments against art college are precisely why I don't want to doa writing oriented course. I believe that with writing - you get taught the basics and then you read your heart out for vocabulary. Either you are a writer or you are not.

Quit Sniveling and Come to the States

Bodice Ripper---I'm sure Ireland is a wonderful place, but as far as I can see it has rather limited possibilities and potential. It's homey, but too fucking small. Apply online to as many American colleges with an art program as you can find, and don't overlook the little rinky-dink colleges in the middle of nowhere. They desparately want to provide the kids in Podunk, Iowa with some diversified experience, and I think a genuine Irish art student qualifies as exotic in Podunk. Yes, you have to endure a zillion dumbass questions about Ireland, green beer and all that shit (I know, I know, St. Patrick's day is just another day in Ireland, but it's a big deal in Boston and New York) but they will finance your education, or at least partially finance your education, because you are so wonderful and you speak English with a cool accent. Hopefully, you can also draw, or paint so do something artistic enough to justify them spending a bunch of money on you. If you're poor, all the better. Bi-racial? Cool. Your neighborhood full of IRA gun thugs and burned out cars? Fucking outstanding. Come to Podunk and show the cowboys a little Irish class. Once you've done a year or two at Podunk State College and you know your way around the U.S. financial aid/grant/scholarship maze, you can transfer to Parsons or Chicago or Reed or Oberlin or some other place where entertainment doesn't involve drinking beer, horses, pick-up trucks or a large bonfire. Besides that, The U.S. is delightfully unconcious. If you're lucky, most of the student body will be majoring in shit like welding, diesel mechanics, irrigation technology and hotel management, and you will be the guiding intellectual light to a couple of thousand redneck teenagers whose idea of art runs to the Norman Rockwell school. The art department will probably be run by a frustrated Jewish intellectual socialist who went to school somewhere like NYU. He'll be delighted to see a genuine artist show up.

Most small towns like Podunk were built on a rail line. My Podunk was right on the high iron between Pasco and Spokane, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We got about three or four freight trains a day.

Don't give up on art school. Get accepted to an American college, get a student visa, pack a ruck and some art supplies and catch a $200 flight to the States. Bring a sleeping bag and a good pair of boots. Leave politics and moral outrage at home.

Two English girls I knew back in 1975 jumped the Canadian border and went to work here in the States as nannies. They worked here two years illegally, banked all their money and moved to Matzalan to learn to surf. Last I heard they owned a restaurant in Mexico.

that might say a little something about your work....ive never seen it but perhaps you lackaesthetic or creative qualities that the admissions board sees fit to succeed in their school.in that case.i wouldn't just bitch and moan because thats just boring.get yourself into some art classes..refine your skills and try again...you may think you know more than you do.

It's not cause I can't draw. It probably isn't because my ideas were good enough. The chances are that its because I didn't have enough stuff.......................

(ps, I might post some of the pieces later, but right now I cannot stand to look at it.............)
