Mr. Mang
maybe you can help? i need some advice form people.. i moved out west interned for a company last year that i have been associated with for a few years now off and on. they are good people and let me live here at work for free close to a year. i eventually moved back for a semester to go to school because no jobs were available. bummer, but no worries. after the semester ended, a job opened up that i didn't exactly want, but took it anyway and moved back out. it semeed like perhaps by spring/summertime the job i wanted (and the company needs..) would be available. i have been here a little over 2 months and have been pretty unhappy. i don't like the city i'm in, don't have any real close friends, and there isn't any opening for the job i want (or any more jobs) in "the forseeable future" as my boss put it. great. i'm stuck in a dead end job thousands of miles from home in a city i'm unhappy in. what now? i usually adjust really really fast to new living situations, but everything changed since ive been back. my bosses (the owners) approached me this morning and asked me what was worng because they know that i haven't been the same the past 2 weeks especially... just really depressed and whatnot. what should i do? option1: stay with the company. it's by far the longest job relationship i have had. they're good people. stick it out in an expensive city i don't like and a job that might not get me anywhere. i've only been working here full time a few months. option2: move up to SF soon where i have some friends, love the city, and find a new job somewhere. skating and art scenes are really big and fun (both i love). lots of people. rent is a little cheaper (believe it or not). try things up there although the future is unsure. option3: be a pussy and move back home in shame. ok city, dirt cheap rent, and a couple of friends. !@#$%
SF is fucking awesome i know people who have had great times [living] there even with no money and no job i'd do that if i were you... what is your priority? a resume? or your happiness? fermentor666
Don't move back home, you will be so depressed and angry at yourself and you will start sleeping all day and staying up on the internet all night. I'd say move to SF and try and start new there, look through classifieds for jobs that you're qualified for and I'm sure you'll find something, especially in a city as diverse as SF. InfiniteWisdomOfThePezDisp
ok, #3 is not an option. you're young enough that it should be the absolute, drop dead, last resort. if the job you currently have has nothing to do with your field and doesn't help you progress towards your goals then leave. try to get you homies to hook you up with some cheap rent while you are jobless. once you get a good job throw a little scratch their way as a thank you. if it does, stay and try to find new friends. there have to be other people that skate. try to find some clubs (not bars) based on interests you have and hang out with them. in the mean time, shoot some resumes off to people in San Fran and other locations that have the job you want. if you're still unhappy after that, move to San Fran. Zack Morris
if you stick it out and another job opens up at the company your working for the fact that you stuck it out to get something better witht he company should shine through and help you get that job if you are remotely qualified for it....or you could also put a hit out on the guyt hat has the job you want. honestly I don't know what to tell you to do. I think you should just sit and brain storm of allt he possible outcomes that would come from the choices that are layed out in front of you, decide which one you would like to happen and which one is most likely to happen. This is an important desicsion in your life that you should put some serious thaught into and figure out for yourself. You will be much happier with what happens. Quoted post I hope it's a balance between the two. Option 2. Whatever you do, like fermentor said, don't move back home. Staying where you're at seems to be a waste of time, energy and money. Take the chance and move.
mkonji
option 2 for sure
!@#$%
prioritizing is important. of course life is a balance between responsibilities and happiness and such. it's about what is MORE important at the time. priorities change, life is unpredicatable. btw..i wouldn't stick it out in hopes of a reward. companies do promote from within sometimes yes, but they also love to string people along..everyone knows what a pain in the ass it is to find a new job, even worse if you also have to move.. most companies i have worked for have been long on promises and short on delivery. hiring new people is a pain in the ass too, if your boss was cool enough to level with you about the likelihood of a job you want opening up soon, listen to him..it's not going to happen anytime in the next year at least. boogie hands
if youve only been working full time a few months you may want to tough it out a bit longer. things change so quickly in business....for instance if you asked the owners of my company if my positon would be available anytime in the near future they would say no. fact of the matter is it will be......they dont know it, but it will be wide open by april or may. there are always people unhappy with their jobs and there are always better options available so you may want to stick it out and see what happens. on another note if your so unhappy, to the point where bosses are asking you whats wrong, you may want to go ahead and leave. ive been down that road and generally speaking, your situation isnt going to improve.....you could even end up getting canned. Mr. Mang
i really appreciate all the help. you guys rule! seriously. moving home is definitely an absolute last resort.
CACashRefund
Option 2, apparently youre not happy where you are and nobody really wants to move back with their parents after theyve had the kind of freedom people who have moved out have. Moving to the scoe can be at the very least a learning experience for you. I say go for it man.
26SidedCube
It's easy to handle being out of your element, but not in a hole. It's simple to manage being in a hole, but not out of your element. It'll drive you into a shitty, dark place being both out of your element and in a hole with no one to confide in. I recently moved back home to get myself out of debt/ legal limbo and rid myself of an ongoing (4+ years) depression... am I ashamed? Fuck no. Anyone who faults you for moving home to clear your head and get established before venturing out into the world to stake your claim is on some 9th grade shit and hasn't had much contact with the real world and the granny-panty flavored shit life can shovel down your throat when you're uncomfortable with that little, subjective thing YOU call YOUR life. Of course, don't ever make excuses or feel sorry for yourself.. like someone said, prioritize, plan, and act accordingly.

Quoted post I know this isn't addressed at anyone in particular, and you're absolutely right. If you're in any kind of trouble, physically, mentally, financially, and moving home would help you out then there is nothing wrong with that. I, myself, just had to have surgery and had to delay school and move back home for a few months. It was neccassary, and there's no shame in doing so like 26 said. Once I healed up, though, it was time to get the hell out of there, and I did that, too, got a new place the other week. But if you're just bored and frustrated with where you are at now, pick SF over moving home, at least you will have options where if you're at home you might get stuck in the same routines that made you want to leave in the first place. The luster wears off your parents house real quick if you're moving back in. You could think of SF as starting a new life, or just experiencing a new surrounding. Plus, I hear SF is a happening place.
