seriously,

skateboarding is NOT a sport.

FUCK SPORTS.

There are no scores, there is no out of bounds.

There are no point spreads, there is no winner or loser.

No one is ever picked last in skateboarding.

There are no referees, coaches, or sudden death overtimes.

Skateboarding is NOT a sport.

Skateboarding is form and power and grace

Its motion and balance and technique.

Its stance and foot position and STYLE.

Skateboarding is not a sport.

FUCK SPORTS

Skateboarding is dancing.

Haha, I hear you. What up with those fags that think sports is stupid? This guy last night insisted he come over and watch the leaf game. Why, I ask? All season long he’s bashed sports in general, calling it “an opiate for the masses” (LOL) and such. So here he is in my basement, where I’ve told him to keep his mouth shut while the puck is in play. What does he do? “Uhh, the Leafs aren’t skating; they need to start dumping, blah, blah, blah.” Fucking nimrod. Guy needs one of his canvases smashed over his head.

Skateboarding kicks ass, but I never learned how to ride in a straight line, even. I was never one of the cool kids that got to wear hook-ups and birdhouse and those nice dcs.

wow... I've never seen skateboarding look so gay.

and YES it freakin' is a sport.

Do people judge skateboard contests? YES!

Are there professional skaterboarders? YES!

look at it this way.....

You can go skiing all by yourself in the backwoods

or you can ski on a slalom course in the olympics.

You can ride a bike to work and it's just a commute,

or you can ride in the tour de france and it's a sport.

You can do flips and handstands like a monkey,

but do it in front of judges and you're a gymnist.

see that point ?

i hear ya.

but, at least to me. the point of basketball (or whatever) is to play games and win them. sure people shoot around and practice alone or whatever, but to what end? preparing for competition.

some skateboarders ride in contests and are judged. but there are plenty that never do. they make all their cheese from sponsors. you dont have to compete to be a pro. and i dont see how being pro makes it a sport.

put it this way....what i do on a skateboard is not a sport. yes, its physical, athletic and sometimes dangerous, and alot less gay than ballet. but its never to win, to beat someone else, to be the world champ series playoff superstar.

true that. i didnt mean they are inferior product. just that they are the american eagle of skateboard shoes. (or some such company) im just sayin i see plenty of vapid teenage girls with DC products on who im willing to bet my life dont know why danny way is the fucking man, or who he is at all for that matter.

that's all a question of personal motivation.

Pretty much every human activity has become

a sport if people are willing to watch it and

someone else is willing to put up some kind of prize.

ok... you're using point based team sports.

Think of the difference between the 'season stats'

of football and just one pure and simple touchdown.

One guy wants to throw a perfect ball.

Another guy wants to make a perfect catch.

Yet another guy want to make a perfect tackle.

Instead of fighting gravity on a skateboard,

they are fighting a block or a tackle on the football pitch.

stats and paychecks asides...

Is that perfect touchdown pass any less of an art that a 360 flip?

and if you say that the touch down is art too...

then what if you have a judge and a prize on that '360 flip.

Hasn't that skate trick become a sport?

The two are interchangable when you break them down to raw elements.

its not any less of an art. but stats and paychecks wont be aside ever. at least in professional atmosphere. whereas they can be in the pro atmosphere of skating. the MAJOR factor in throwing that pass is scoring and winning the game. if the 3rd string quaterback comes in and throws a dead duck pass that some benchwarming loser barely catches, but indeed does catch . then they still are heros, no matter how shitty it played out.

BUT

if some toolbelt comes into the park im at and has booty style, pushes mongo and lands ugly splayed feet 360 flips. fuck him, hes in my way, and taking up precious space.

i dunno, its a pointless argument really, but i love having it.

like the way I went and quoted myself to deliver the closing 1-2 punch?

If there are grounds to judge it, it can be a sport.

And you going to tell me at any decent skate sport there arent like 40 'judges' sitting around taking score at any moment?

You just proved that by saying

"he park im at and has booty style, pushes mongo and lands ugly splayed feet 360 flips"

judge not lest ye be judged?

I'm going to have to agree with Kilo on this one. His points about skiing, biking, and gymnastics were very on-point. It totally depends on the circumstance, but I still consider skateboarding to be a sport. Although it was once considered a form of expression, it has slowly evolved into a form of competition. Most professional skateboarders nowadays DO participate in competitions, which would label them sportsmen. There are exceptions to everything, but majority rules mang.

HAHAHA touche.

i mean obviously you can argue it out to the bare details, and "prove" me wrong. i basically just bring this up all the time because average joe thinks that X games is all there is to skateboarders.

and sure there are kids in dirt driveways who play ball and may have the same purity of heart that i have about skating. but to me, competition doesnt belong in skating. i dont like contests, because its all subjective in the end.

In sports;) there is a defined winner and loser. but with skating its all about personal opinion, which takes it out of the context of sport to me. by that rational, figure skating isnt a sport either, and well..so be it.

If syncro swimming and 'Ice Dancing' is a sport, then b-boying could be too.

And forget that 'underground exclusive' shit. It wont make a difference in 30 years when b-boys wear gold medals in the Olympics.

word witty... I'm in a debate mood.

I totally know where you're coming from with

the 'purity of the sport talk' but dont you think that applies

to every kind of sport. Pro athelets are so few in number

compared to the people out doing it for fun every day.

Like baseball.... playing a game of softball with the boys

then having some burgers and beers... does it matter who won?

The points dont really mean shit if you're enjoying yourself.

Bboying was founded on battling and competitiveness. Sure it's evolved into a more expressive dance that can be done purely for the fun and self-fullfillment that plain dancing can bring, but it's roots still lie on a very competitive, and thus "sportslike" level.

There's been many many serious talks of bringing bboying into the X Games. There's been a couple of battles already televised on ESPN2.

I swear mamerro has built some '12oz metafilter thingy' that sends an email to his wrist watch when ever someone post anything to do with the word 'bboy'.

admit it!

mos def.

i just know people who play for fun, still get upset to lose.

and plenty of people get pissed off as fuck skating no matter how much of a pro they arent.

i however, am not one of those people. i always have a good time, no matter how badly i skate. and in 15 years of skating i have broken ONE board in anger, and that was last week, and was totally girlfriend related. it just got taken out on the board.

im never a sore loser when it comes to skating.

thats why my favorite skater is louie barletta. dude has fun when he skates, he has video parts where he seriously doesnt even land half of his tricks, but hes still pro, the shit he does land is absolutely ridiculous and hes obviously having the time of his life.

i even have issue with big name skaters who treat the shit like it is football and they are MVP. but thats another argument.

if you ask me... which no one did but that hasnt stopped me so far.....

I think Muska ruined the image of pro skater.

No one really went bling before him. Well maybe Kareem, but he's allowed.

I just rememeber when I was skating how all the kids

tried to mold themselves to the Muska Image.

Mike Carrol had followers, but not like this.

I guess there was a little too much rockstar

when I always thought that was unecessary.

just my opinion.
