Whats up with this?!?!

Ive been trying to get follow ups on the news, nadda!

It seems like they are trying to keep it under cover.

I checked CNN.com, and this is the ninth person

to die at the hands of police in Cincy.

Doesnt matter if youre black, white, purple or green,

getting beat like that is not cool. Especially at the

hands of the law. They say he was all loaded,

but thats no excuse. They could have just backed off

and maced him. Or waited till more back up came.

There are and where other ways this could have

been handled.

Did any of you hear abou that

Vietnamese lady that got shot for wielding a

potatoe peeler!! Fuckin cops are getting away

with murder, while the news keeps talking about

bitch ass Arnold, and Scott Peterson.

Another Black Man Dies At Hands of Cincinnati Police

By Emmanuel Jackson, BET.com Staff Writer

Posted December 1, 2003 -- Cincinnati Black leaders, outraged over yet another death of a Black man at the hands of local police, are calling for a citywide boycott and the firing of officers involved in the most recent incident.

Nathaniel Jones died Sunday after being bludgeoned by officers with metal nightsticks. The Mayor is backing the officers, who say the force was necessary to subdue the 400-pound, 41-year-old Jones.

"We are outraged and appalled that a Black man, arrested for disorderly conduct, wound up dead," said an angry Amanda Mayes, co-chair of the Coalition for a Just Cincinnati, an organization founded in 2001 following the death of Timothy Thomas, a Black man shot dead by police.

Jones's death marks the ninth "Black man murdered by Cincinnati Police," in two years, Mayes told BET.com.

The most recent death occurred early Sunday morning after an employee of the White Castle restaurant called 911 to report that a man - later identified as Jones - had passed out on the grass outside of the restaurant. Emergency workers arrived shortly thereafter, but then called police, saying that Jones became a "nuisance" after he was awakened. Jones reportedly suffered from a sleeping disorder.

Two police officers immediately arrived on the scene. The disturbing moments that followed were recorded by video camera mounted on the police cruiser. The officers apparently tried to grab the unarmed Jones, who appeared to take a swing at the officers.

Officers Baron Osterman and James Pike wrestled Jones to the ground. Then they pulled their nightsticks and struck him repeatedly. Jones appeared to relent early, but the officers continued to swing and jab him with their clubs, hitting him across his arms, back and head. As the encounter continued six more officers showed up and joined in the beating. Police then handcuffed Jones and called for emergency medical staff. He arrived at University Hospital a few moments later, where he was pronounced dead.

The officers at the scene - five White and one Black - have been placed on administrative leave.

In May of 2001 Attorney General John Ashcroft authorized an investigation into the "pattern and practices" of the Cincinnati Police Department. Tiana Rollinson, managing editor of the Cincinnati Herald , a Black-owned newspaper, attended Monday's City Council meeting. Aside from the press, Rollinson said, only family and public officials were issued the tickets required to enter. In a police-lined hallway leading to the council chamber, a few protesters stirred.

"There was a moment of silence during the meeting, but there wasn't much opposition or outrage there," Rollinson said.

But, given past riots that sparked after the "suspicious" death of other Black men in police custody, Black community leaders, police officials and observers from all over America will be watching what happens in Cincinnati in coming days.

Here is the story about that

lady that got shot down for

brandishing a potatoe peeler.

ba_tran_t.gif

San Jose police checking out a report of a child walking in traffic ended up killing the child's mother after she allegedly advanced on officers with what police said appeared to be a cleaver but what the woman's brother said was a dull vegetable peeler.

Deputy Police Chief Rob Davis said an officer had shot Cau Thi Tran, 25, in her home Sunday night after she failed to respond to orders to drop the kitchen tool -- which he described as "threatening" -- and lifted it as if to throw it.

But family members said Tran had been gesturing angrily with the utensil, which they said was a vegetable peeler, before officers even arrived. They criticized the police decision to open fire, killing Tran in front of her two children, ages 4 and 3.

"I'm just very angry," said Bao Tran, the dead woman's brother. "It's not reasonable for the police to shoot her."

Police and family members agreed on most of the events immediately preceding Cau Tran's death.

Neighbors said Tran, who was living with her boyfriend in a duplex on East Taylor Street in downtown San Jose, had a history of erratic and sometimes angry behavior that had prompted police to visit her home several times, including last week.

One neighbor, who declined to give her name, said she had seen Tran earlier Sunday wandering confusedly in the neighborhood.

"I said, 'Go take care of your children. They need you. Go take care of your little babies,' " the neighbor said. "She just stood there like she didn't know what she was going to do."

The neighbor said Tran's boyfriend, Quang Bui, had taken her into their home and closed the blinds. Neighbors said they could hear screaming and banging coming from the home where the couple lived with Tran's two children, 4-year-old Tony Bui and 3-year-old Tommy Bui.

Bao Tran said his sister had not been taking her medication, which he said was for anxiety, and was angry Sunday because she had locked her keys in her room. She walked outside and tried to climb in a window to retrieve them and was unsuccessful, he said.

Tran said at least one of his sister's sons had apparently followed the mother outside. Residents said that the boy had wandered into busy East Taylor Street and that a neighbor had pulled him out of the street and carried him home.

Another neighbor called 911 to report the incident at about 9 p.m., police said. Officers Chad Marshall, a four-year veteran, and Tom Mun, who has been with the force two years, responded.

By the time police arrived, the boy was inside. The officers knocked on the door, and Bui told them to come in.

"The boyfriend said, 'She's crazy,' " said Bao Tran, who was not present for the shooting but said he had spoken with Bui afterward.

Bui took the two boys toward the small home's hallway as police entered, Tran said. He said his sister was in the kitchen, yelling and waving the utensil. As soon as police stepped inside and saw her, he said, they shot her.

"Just one second," Tran said. "They didn't talk with her or anything."

Tran said his sister's two children had seen their mother die. They are staying with friends.

Davis, who visited the home shortly after the shooting, said that he sympathized with the family, but that forensic evidence supported officers' version of events.

Police said that the officers had walked into the duplex at Bui's invitation and that Cau Tran had screamed at them to get out. Moving between Tran and her family, the officers tried to calm the woman down, Davis said, but she pulled what looked like a cleaver out of a drawer and brandished it at them.

Davis said the officers had warned Tran to drop the utensil, but she instead raised it over her head as if to throw it. Marshall fired one round at her, hitting her in the chest.

Davis said the case would be reviewed by his office, the district attorney, the grand jury and the city Office of the Independent Police Auditor. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.

Ok, and here is a news story about the latter.

The police tried to apologise for their harsh reactions.

Police air condolences over Vietnamese radio

By John Woolfolk and Truong Phuoc Khánh

Mercury News

San Jose police have begun airing Vietnamese radio spots expressing sympathy and regret for last week's fatal shooting of a young mother by an officer in an effort to repair relations with a community outraged by the tragedy.

``We would like to express our condolences to the family of Cau Thi Bich Tran and the Vietnamese community in San Jose,'' a San Jose police officer says in Vietnamese in the public service announcements running hourly over the weekend on Vietnamese-language KZSJ-AM (1120).

``We regret this incident has happened -- one no one could have foreseen,'' the officer continued. ``We are very concerned and are paying close attention to this matter. We have also begun a very careful investigation.''

The officer concludes by inviting members of the community to call (408) 279-3438 and ``share your ideas.''

Police Sgt. Steve Dixon confirmed the radio campaign over the weekend but said details would not be available until today.

The radio announcement made little impression on some who heard it Sunday.

``To me, it's not good enough,'' said Tom Hoang, 44, as he visited a Vietnamese pharmacy at King Plaza. ``Anyone can send condolences. I'd like to have a fair investigation into this matter.''

Police have been struggling to explain why an officer fatally shot Tran, 25, in her kitchen less than a minute after entering her duplex on an abandoned-child call. Police said the officer thought she was about to attack him with a cleaver.

Police took the unusual step of showing reporters the kitchen tool Tran had in her hand, a 10-inch vegetable peeler. But the move outraged many in the Vietnamese community who felt police incorrectly described the device.

Police have stopped calling it a cleaver, but said the sharp-edged tool still qualified as a deadly weapon and that an officer a short distance away and fearing for his safety would have little time to use less-lethal force.

Meeting a throng of Vietnamese protesters Wednesday, police Chief Bill Lansdowne said he was ``truly sorry'' for the shooting, which he called a tragedy for the Tran's family and the police department.

But apologies and explanations last week failed to satisfy many in the community of 80,000.

``They came to the house and not even a minute later they shoot the woman,'' said cell phone salesman Danny Bui, 25, on Sunday. ``Why not use pepper spray? The woman is not even 100 pounds.''

Fellow salesman Thuan Pham, 22, agreed and said police were ``just trying to calm the people down'' with the radio announcements.

``I don't think it makes a lot of difference,'' Pham said.

The district attorney's office last week called for open grand jury hearings into the shooting, a step not taken since 1996.

Many Vietnamese residents interviewed Sunday said they do not want to judge the police but want officers to be more careful.

``We are a law-abiding, peaceful people and have no problem cooperating and working with police,'' said Ky Ngo, adviser for the Vietnamese-American Community of Northern California. ``We will all be friends. But we condemn and are very angry with anyone who uses excess force to attack innocent people.''

After hearing the police radio announcements, Ky said he wished the statement ``had been said a long time ago.''

``But better late than never.''

i seen some shit about how these two kids got shot in nyc..it was a documentary and this specialist showed from the autopsy that they were shot seventeen times or so each in the head arms and chest face down on the floor because one had a gun and when the dt's came in he dropped it according to witness's. so his mom gets this autopsy information and calls up that bastard devil rudy guliani on the radio and asks if he would like to review the information and he sidesteps that and pretty much yells at her for raising her son the wrong way, compeltely cuts her off and she is just like...my son was murdered and we would like you to review the autopsy results that indicate he was shot in the back 17 times face down on the floor. this was shortly before the Ahmud Diallo(sp) was shot like 41 times for pulling his wallet out by nine cops in the Bronx.

good thread Webster... cops these last few years are shooting over nothing and its on the news and they are getting away with it....i think its cause most police departments these days are mad crooked and the bastards in power like guliani let that shit go cause murder must be a campaign value or someshit.

bump,

I tried renaming the post to :POLICE BRUTALITY:

but it stayed the same, because this is about police

taking advantage of their position in society.

Maybe some of you can share your thoughts

on this subject, or any stories of similar acts.

I saw the video of this...

It's downright inhumane what they did to that guy. He was completely peaceful until the police provoked him and now they're trying to use his having PCP and Coke (I think?) in his system as their defense...

Odd, he wasn't attacking civilians so he couldn't have been that out of hand... who the hell lets pedistrians walk blindly by then attacks police for no reason?

Tease-I know what youre trying to get at.

But, cops are supposed to hang up all

stereotypes, and racial profiles at the door.

Not all dark skinned folks act like that.

Nor are all light skinned folks 'sheltered crackers'.

PCP or not, they could have just backed the fuck up.

He didnt have a weapon. He was just a big black guy.

That probably scared them into thinking they had

to club him to subdue him. WRONG!

Thats why they give cops mace. To make prevent

killing someone in an attempt to make an arrest.

You should only draw a weapon if the suspect

has one too. Shit is fucked up no matter what angle.

Like I said, he was a man, that got beat down by

cops for acting a fool! Where is the justice in that.

They could have just maced him.

They didnt have to kill him. Or that lady.

Put it this way.

You like to sport a jersey, with a cap, and

some Jordans...right?

Thats the profile for a thug in a cops book.

They might have been told that thugs

could possibly be carrying a weapons.

Youre driving down the strip in your G-ride,

and you get pulled over. You get pulled out

by gun point because you look suspect,

and the cops are merely

pulling guns for their own protection.

You have a zippo lighter in your hands,

cop mistakes it for a .22 and BANG!

Your dead.

is that cool?

alright, im going to try and disagree with you.

i hope this doesnt come off as an attack and hopefully, this thread can prove to be an intelligent discussion or debate. nad not some "FUCK THE POLICE YO" type of shit...

dude, i agree with police are supposed to check all that shit at the door, BUT, come the fuck on. this is the real world. people are human, and people get conditioned. i have a hard time believe 98% of the people on this board, or anywhere, would be able to do that job, day in and day out, and not develop preconcieved thoughts and beliefs. its almost impossible. you strive for that, but realize its not attainable 100% of the time.

and in this case, i was ready to get my hate on. you think im a huge fan of cops. uhm, no. so when my girl told me to check it out, i was ready to get my hate on. but you know what? i couldnt. i thought the police acted appropriately. i didnt see anything alarming or worthy of the backlash. is it hard to watch? sure. do i like seeing cops with batons thumping on dude? nope. do i think it was warranted and done without excess? yup. dude was 350+. hopped up on wet and yayo. started swinging at the cops. cops repeatedly told him to chill. all the baton blows were body blows, none to the head. it took 6 cops to get him in cuffs. one of those six was a black officer. are they supposed to wait until he had the upperhand? clearly homie was fucked up and beligerent. again.

sad? yes.

excessive? no.

there are far more ways to subdue someone without a six on one clubbing. so its overall the departments fault for not researching more effective less lethal ways to restrain a person, such as grappling, because if 6 well trained grapplers were trying to lock someones limbs up belive they probably could. And then theres the fact that some officers think it is completely the right thing to do to use excessive force because they are the law enforcement agency. bottom line though, most big city police departments have a long history of racism and corruption. come on now, the civil rights movement was only 40 years ago and cops are just as corrupt now.

cmon!!!

first, they used nonlethal ways to restrain him! those bodyblows werent lethal. a 350+ pound man at fuckin whitecastle before 6am hoppedd up on coke and angel dust is fuckin lethal!

i agree homie on the police corruption. its sick, sad, disgusting and intolerable. im just saying i dont believe that this is one of those cases.

oh and dusty... they dont mace him til after he is on the ground and looks subdued (as far as i can tell)... i agree that they def. had to hit him.. but it was 6 on 1.. and being police, they should be trained as to when their means are lethal (they could have just shot him in the leg).

As much as we all disagree on the details here... at least cops all heve the video cameras on their dash for evidence.... Rodney King was lucky to have someone in the bushes taping back then.

Sad and frustrating.

I hate this shit ... but I maybe ignore more of it cuz i'm a white boy and don’t face the attitude you get from authority that comes with being minority in these situations. I can’t imagine what it would be like so I don’t try to empathize, as I feel it would only come off as insulting.

well, i can only speak for myself..

i have witnessed police brutality a few times

one of the worst was seeing a girl punched full on in the face while she was laying on her back on the ground..yes, she had been thrashing, but the welt on her eye was unbelievable.

once when i was caught painting, my friend who was with me had his mouth in overdrive, but was mainly just talking to the cops about letting me go since i had a future to think about.

eventually the cop got sick of listening to it and ended up putting his gun point blank in my freind's face and saying "do you think it would matter if i killed you right here? no one would know. no one would care. i'm just going to shoot you and leave you here [in the ghetto] "

(i reacted by doing the only thing i could to alarm the cop: i cried....it worked and the cop eventually let us go, after a lot more threats)

the cops in my city are straight evil.

when i tried to report my assault, the cop refused because he didn't believe me

frankly.. i can't complain... because if they were "fair" it jsut means they'd be that tough on everyone.

and as for the video... the entire time, i was just thinking "just mace the fucker"

i've been through my share of brutality.. being a big guy, some cope that is smaller than me jumps at the chance to get a few licks in on a cat that he knows would take him out if it was just us and he wasn't a cop... recently i had a lil footchase. realizing i wasn't going to get away, i thought "fuck it," and stopped, immediatly putting my hands in the air (i dont wanna give em an excuse to shoot). i go through procedures and shit, he's on top of me cuffing me.. whatever.. but being a big guy, i have wide shoulders; hence, my arms don't go together as easily in back of me as most people... i was seriously trying to force them together not giving them an excuse.. then dude's partner comes along and starts fucking using me as a trampoline, punching me in the ribs and the back of the head as im yelling out "im trying to help you," and i seriously was.... once in the squad car i heard them complaining about how there were witnesses around so they couldn't really have fun.

Yeah I think they went a little too far and I do believe most cops are corrupt assholes, or atleast abuse their authority. I'm white and I get harassed by white cops everytime I walk down the street. If they see you walking up the street with more than one other person with you they will decide to fuck with you. They try to pull you over and if you keep walking because you didn't do anything they will come at you with their night stick. If you do decide to stop they will throw you on the car and search you. If they find nothing of interest they will either tell you your high or drunk and proceed to give you a breath-a-lizer. And half the shit they do is illegal just based upon the fact that I'm a minor. And this is especially bad towards the end of the month because they are trying to up their arrests to meet the quota. Fuckers

this is in no way a "fuck the police, yo!"

type thread. I was hoping to start a discussion

and see how people felt about this. Because

you know...brothas aint trying to see or hear

this type of shit! You remember Rodney King!

I feel, they used too much force.

Plus, people need to be aware that

cops can and will use their power.

Like I said, they could have maced him.

The mace is right there next to their baton.

They could have maced him, and took

a few swings at his legs! I saw a few blows go to

his head. That shit hurts! One of my friends

took a blow to his thigh...it left a fat ass welt

on his thigh, and also bent the keys in his pocket.

Watch the video again...how many hits did he take.

You could say his body weight and the drug factor

contributed to his death, but damn dude...they

didnt have to BEAT THE LIFE OUT OF HIM!

I understand they "did what they had to do"

but cmon...they have mace.

And after being on the force long enough, you

would think they would know how to handle such a situation

without having a casualty. The cop that shot that lady was a rookie.

I think they saw a hopped up big black man,

and got pissy skurred, Yanked out their batons and went to town.

They could have just backed up waited for back up, and get like 10 cops to tackle his ass.

Thats what they do on COPS....right?

I didnt take your post as an attack either.

You have your pinion, I have mine.

:)

I sold a watch to a cop once. i think he was CHP...his wife was a cop to and they had a little boy maybe 7 or 8 now. Anyway, this restraunt gets robbed and hotages taken maybe like two months later, and Officer Monego walked up to the restraunt with out a bullet proof and was shot and killed in early 99. I seen it on tv and recognized the name cause he was a pretty funny guy and i spent maybe 30 minutes helping him select a watch and we even talked about writers getting hemmed and jail senteneces and he was allright, anyway....i found it funny cause i was fresh out so after i sold him a 180 dollar watch i was like yeah, i just got out of jail and it kinna took his wife and himself by suprise, but anyway, I felt bad for his wife and son because he died over nothing, just being careless and thinking its ok to walk up to a armed robbery hostage situation with no bullet proof on and all of a sudden your dead. So he got a freeway named after him.

so i advocate more training for police officers. i think the common guideline now is right to use lethal force with very few alternatives. and the cops that partrol the "ghettos" are really in warzones and war is a fucked up thing and innocent people get killed and the news portrays it that the cops are always right which allows corruption to happen and we pay for it all. Prisons and jails are fucked up places and waste billions of tax payer money because the rehabillitation is so uneffective and further assists in the decay of generations of family structure.
