ETHREADZNY
( I REALIZE THAT THERE ALREADY IS A THREAD ABOUT PHASE2 IN THIRD RAIL< BUT THIS MAN WAS A PIONEER OF THE LETTERS PEOPLE ARE USING ON WALLS TODAY) from 149st PHASE 2 - Pioneer Aliases: PAIN Started: # Primary affiliations: INDs Local origin: Bronx, NY Main lines: IRTS Often referred to as a father of style PHASE 2 is considered by many to be one of the most significant painters of the aerosol art movement. In the early 1 970s PHASE 2 was a key figure, helping to pioneer the creation and reinterpretation of new letter forms. Many present day aerosol paintings across the globe are clearly derivative of integrations and embellishments created by PHASE. He was president of the prestigious INDs crew as well as the Bronx chapter of the Ex-Vandals. He was a major force in creating a visual look for Hip Hop. He was one of Hip Hop's first major underground graphic designers. He designed promotional flyers and posters for early hip hop's top acts such as Kool Herc and Grand Master Flash. He is the founder IGT TIMES, the first magazine dedicated to Aerosol art. He is also the author of Style from the Underground a perspective on the evolution aerosol art's development. SCOTCH WHISKEO
This guy, along with TRACY, BILLY, PEL, BOT, KING2, P-NUT2, RIFF170 and others of that era, invented the entire arsenal of weapons(arrows, connections, loops, drips, platform serifs, chips, etc...) that we still use in what we now call "wild style". The amazing thing is that all these progressive innovations came about in a matter of months, from simple outlined tags and bubble letters to what would stand up against any technical"wild style" you can show me today. By 1977 it had all been done. And for the record, while PHASE2 did use aliases (most notably "CAD") "PAIN" was not one of them. That "PAIN" panel piece above was done by Phase with Skeme during Phase's brief 1982 comeback (when Skeme brought him out and they pulled off the "TUFF CITY" top to bottom whole car. Phase did that piece for "PAIN" who was a white kid that went to Music and Art H.S. with Skeme and would rack all the paint for Skeme, but had no piecing skills. If you refer to "Subway Art" you can find a whack piece that Pain actually did himself on the 1 line with the inscription "HI COONEY!"(Cooney was our Dean at Music and Art H.S. at that time). Most people with pictures from his era aren't posting them on the web. I'm guessing they're either holding out for something more lucrative or they just want to keep the gems to themselves. Also, the sad truth is- a lot of stuff was never photographed. In the grand scheme of things, the writer/photographer/ document- everything hybrid that we have today is a new[er] phenomenon. Removed
AWSOME POST:) Its a pity there is not more photo's available.. I once saw a photo in an old hype mag (an ozzie publication) of Phase 2's wild styles and it flipped my lid,i think did he not only pioneer alot of graffiti style but he was very well versed on fine art history, tell me if im wrong here but almost see some of picasso's influence shinning through his wild styles.. Phase 2 is the true master of graffiti. His influence is obvious all over the world in early graffiti, in australia i think Merda (a master in his own right) is a good example of this. I have never seen his book but i think i will have to get a copy. Does any one know if he is still producing art of any kind (ie graffic art, canvas's or graffiti) because it would be nice to know that this king is still shining at his chosen vocation. Amazing!!!! A very interesting character and a true pioneer of writing. A question - how old is this cat, and how old would he have been in the mid to late seventies when he and his contemporaries were coming up with all this innovative stuff. One of the most beautiful things about 'graffiti' to me is that it's an art form totally invented by people who would be considered children by most of society.
