mental invalid
Mekka Electronic Music Festival nabs Spitkicker acts by Christina Fuoco LiveDaily Contributing Writer The De La Soul-led Spitkicker tour is joining forces with the fledgling Mekka electronic music outing for a tour of major urban markets in the United States and Canada. The Crystal Method, BT, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Carl Craig, Josh Wink, Roni Size and Mixmaster Mike are among the Mekkans slated to share venues with hip-hop acts De La Soul, Biz Markie and Common on the 10-city, multiple-stage jaunt. The tour, dubbed the Mekka Electronic Music Festival, kicks off on Aug. 4 at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit, Mich., and wraps up on Sept. 2 at an as-of-yet unnamed venue in San Francisco. Toronto-based electronic music promoter Mekka assembled the tour. According to the festival spokeswoman, there will be several on-stage collaborations between Spitkicker acts: De La Soul and Common on "The Bizness," Talib Kweli and Common on "Respiration," Pharoahe Monch, Common and Kweli on "The Truth," and Kweli and De La Soul on "Soul Rebels." On the Mekka side, the roster includes a variety of acts across the electronic music spectrum, specifically house, techno, hip-hop, drum and bass, and trance. Besides those listed above, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, DJ Dan, Uberzone, DJ Rap and LTJ Buken are scheduled to appear on several dates. Between 15,000 and 30,000 people are expected to attend each stop of the tour, according to its spokeswoman. The tour, sponsored by Napster and Xbox video game system, will offer a festival-style layout with tented areas and multiple stages. Two CD compilations, mixed by Junior Sanchez and H-Foundation, will be released in conjunction with Mekka. Complete lineups and venues will soon be added to the festival's official website.
