Its a tape, but still...

CIA believes terror tape voice is bin Laden's

Tape warns Americans of impending attacks, offers truce

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/19/binladen.tape/index.html

CNN) -- CIA officials believe an audiotaped message threatening the United States is from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who warns that plans for terror attacks are under way -- and also offers a "long-term truce."

"The war against America and its allies will not be confined to Iraq," the voice on the tape said, adding that "Iraq has become a magnet for attracting and training talented fighters."

"It's only a matter of time," the voice said, referring to attacks. "They are in the planning stages, and you will see them in the heart of your land as soon as the planning is complete." (Watch report on purported bin Laden tape -- 3:26)

CIA intelligence officials who analyzed the recording, which was aired Thursday on Arabic-language network Al-Jazeera, said they believe the voice on the poor-quality audiotape is that of bin Laden.

CNN's senior editor for Arab affairs, Octavia Nasr, also said it sounded like the al Qaeda leader, and added that its tone sounded calm and composed, not like a man who is desperate or sick.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the tape suggested bin Laden was "under pressure." He also dismissed the idea of a truce, saying, "We must confront threats before it is too late ... before the attacks reach our shores."

The voice on the taped message also opened the door to a "solution."

"In response to the substance of the polls in the U.S., which indicate that Americans do not want to fight Muslims on Muslim land, nor do they want Muslims to fight them on their land, we do not mind offering a long-term truce based on just conditions that we will stick to.

"We are a nation that God banned from lying and stabbing others in the back. Hence, both parties of the truce will enjoy stability and security to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan, which were destroyed by war.

"There is no problem in this solution, but it will prevent hundreds of billions from going to influential people and warlords in America -- those who supported Bush's electoral campaign. And from this, we can understand Bush and his gang's insistence on continuing the war," the voice said.

On the tape, the speaker said, "Our mujahedeen were able to overcome all the security measures in European countries, and you saw their operation in major European capitals" -- apparent references to July's transit bombings in London and the 2004 train attacks in Madrid, Spain.

FBI, counterterrorism and intelligence officials say there's been no increase in "chatter," or monitored communications, and no intelligence suggests any terrorist plan is operational or ready to be put in place in the United States.

No plans exist to raise the nation's threat level from "yellow" -- or elevated -- to "orange" -- or high, according to a Homeland Security official.

The official said the threat level has never been raised in reaction to an al Qaeda tape. The threat level has been raised seven times since the color warning system was created after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

It's not known exactly when the tape was recorded, but U.S. counterterrorism officials believe it may have been made sometime in December.

The reference to attacks in European cities would indicate it was recorded after the July bombings in London. The morning rush-hour attacks on three subways and a double-decker bus killed at least 52 people.

Another clue includes a reference to a secret British government memo, first reported in a British newspaper, The Mirror, on November 22.

"Recently documents appeared that the freedom butcher of the world was planning to bomb the headquarters of the satellite television Al-Jazeera in Qatar," the voice said, according to a transcript on Al-Jazeera's Web site.

In the memo, President Bush allegedly discussed such a plan, which the White House dismissed as "outlandish." (Full story)

Broadcast portions of the tape did not, however, mention the CIA strike on a home in Damadola, Pakistan, last Friday. The CIA had targeted senior al Qaeda members, who were expected to attend a dinner, and it is not clear if any were among the 18 people who were killed.

If the CIA voice analysis proves correct, it would be the first message from bin Laden since he released two audiotaped messages in December 2004.

The first of those messages mentioned the attack on the U.S. Consul offices in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, earlier that month that left five people dead. In the second message, bin Laden anointed terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as his deputy in Iraq.

The last videotaped message from bin Laden was seen just before the U.S. presidential election in 2004.

Reference to U.S. opinion polls

In the audiotape released released Thursday, the speaker cited U.S. opinion polls, saying that most Americans want U.S. troops pulled out of Iraq.

"Your President Bush has been misleading you. He has lied when he said that the people are behind him. Opinion polls have indicated that the overwhelming majority of you want him to pull the troops out of our land.

"We have the answer to [this] misleading information. The situation in Iraq is getting worse for you, and the dead and the injured among you is on the rise," the voice on the tape said.

It's not clear exactly which polls he's referring to, but CNN/USA Today/Gallup polls released January 11 showed that 53 percent of those questioned felt things were going badly for the United States in Iraq, and 46 percent thought things were going well.

What exactly is so biased about this? Osama released a tape, in which he outlined how he is planning on attacking the United States, in a threatening manner. El Mammero wrote an excellent post about seeing the media as biased depending on your viewpoint in the Fallujah thread that is worth reading.

As far as a "truce" offer, its an obvious sign of weakness. Which means the recent air strike in Pakistan might have been too close to comfort and the realization the Pakistani govt will role over. Or bin Laden detects the weakening public support in America and is moving in for the kill, which Zawahiri alluded too with his last smash hit music video "livin la vida carbomb".

Huh.  That's interesting.  If we pull out of Iraq, Al Quada leaves the US alone?

I'm sure Dubya will jump on that opportunity.

al qaeda isnt gonna leave anyone alone

its just propaganda

Yeah... I wasn't serious. I really don't see this happening.

Simultaneous bombs kill 22

Iraqi insurgents killed at least 22 people in two simultaneous bomb blasts in central Baghdad yesterday, challenging a security clampdown on the capital ahead of the release of the results of last month's elections today.

International monitors, asked to review complaints from minority Sunni Arabs about election fraud, delivered a report concluding that the vote was broadly fair but adding that a new government should be inclusive of all Iraq's communities.

Fearing a surge in attacks by Sunni Arab rebels, the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government sealed off several Iraqi cities and sent more troops and police onto Baghdad's streets yesterday at the start of a two-day security operation.

But hours after police had set up extra checkpoints throughout the city, a police patrol was hit by a blast in central Baghdad.

"At the same time a suicide bomber went inside the coffee shop and blew himself up," a policeman at the scene said, adding that 22 people, mostly civilians, had been killed in the two blasts.

What I dont understand is this truce. Al Qaeda's biggest weapon is the Wahhibi propaganda supporting militant Jihad. ANY kind of truce with the west seems to be against everything Osama stands for. There's some serious theological hypocrisy going on over there, I think Osama has a better chance of losing his place as the Al Qaeda representative, than he has of this truce happening.

Maybe after 78 years, Al Qaeda's losing steam. lol.

(01/19/06 -- DURHAM) - A Duke professor says he is doubtful about Thursday's audiotape from Osama bin Laden.

Bruce Lawrence has just published Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama Bin Laden, a book translating bin Laden's writing. He is skeptical of Thursday's message.

It was like a voice from the grave, Lawrence said.

He thinks bin Laden is dead and has doubts about the tape. Lawrence recently analyzed more than 20 complete speeches and interviews of the al Qaida leader for his book. He says the new message is missing several key elements.

There's nothing in this from the Koran. He's, by his own standards, a faithful Muslim, Lawrence said. He quotes scripture in defense of his actions. There's no quotation from the Koran in the excerpts we got, no reference to specific events, no reference to past atrocities.?

While the CIA confirms the voice on the tape is bin Laden's, Lawrence questions when it was recorded. He says the timing of its release could be to divert attention from last week?s U.S. air strike in Pakistan. The strike targeted bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, and killed four leading al Qaeda figures along with civilians.

Lawrence believes faulty Pakistani intelligence led to the strike and the civilian deaths, and the tape was leaked by Pakistani authorities to divert attention from their mistake.

It led to a failed military operation where America got blamed, but they people who are really to blame are the ones who provided the intelligence, Lawrence said. I think this is an effort to say were not going look at this terrible incident that happened.

Another element that Lawrence takes issue with in bin Laden's latest message is its length - - only 10 minutes. Previously, the shortest was 18 minutes.

I'd almost say its gotten to the point that we pretty much expect al quaida to plan attacks all the time. For some reason this tape just doesn't have any teeth. It almost seemed like the idle threat of a dying organization.

nothing to support this thought other than a weird feeling.

interesting post buckethead.

I saw an analysis of the tape on "the news hour" last night that was very interesting, and got into some of the things in the article Buckethead posted. There were no references to the Koran at all. It also appeared to be geared more towards South Asia than the ME, because it seemed like it was written in english then translated to arabic (or urdu or farsi or whatever the fuck he speaks). And another thing to mull over, the only other time bin Laden offered a "truce" was in the video where he threatened Europe, and the London bombings occurred shortly afterwards. But I'm not worried, I'm sure this tape was made by Cheney in the whitehouse basement to scare us poor, ignorant, God fearin' Amerikkkans into submission.

Maybe they like the idea that they are still being percieved by the world as a serious threat, and dont feel like disproving statements that perpetuate that idea.

Why wouldnt Osama use the video cameras that he has used in the past? All of a sudden he's releasing poor quality audio tapes. What next? Hastily written messages on bar napkins that he wrote after having a few too many?
