when i got back from college in 1993, things had definitely chnaged. graffiti had seen it's hayday. at its height, it seemed that taggers would never be discouraged by the tactics that the city used to 'buff' them. but in the long run, the city had more stamina. as people grew older, they didn't have the time or energy to keep it up. it was a downhill battle. one by one, all the great lots got fenced up and all the buses got covered with anti-graffiti paint. sure, there's still the artist's who prefer to work with cans of spray paint, but it's more confined, and often 'legal.' then there's the kids who write on postal stickers at home and stick them to buses later. somehow, that just feels like a copout. but, i'll never forget the most insane example of determination as the ORFN tag in the duboce tunnel: for almost a half mile of train track, the tag ORFN is repeatedly connected over and over no taller than half an inch

SEEING "ORFN 9T3" WRITTEN ON A DUMPSTER ALMOST A DECADE AGO IS STILL ETCHED IN MY MIND. I KNOW THIS IS AN ORFN THREAD BUT IT WOULD ROCK TO SEE ANY OTHER "US" OR "IBC" PICS OUT THERE ON THIS THREAD.

i cant remember the year but i was still in junior high. years before i ever started trying to draw those cool "graffiti letters" i started seeing in all the skate magazines, i noticed orfn. visiting family in sf walking through some park i saw it sideways on a pole, then on the corner of the curb, on the bustop, on the payphone, and i could read it even though it was spelled WRONG! my head was spinning "what if he is an orphan?" "i wonder if he is really short to paint those curbs?" "why is it spelled that way?" "how many people write it?" "is it a gang?" "what is that thing after the 'n' " i even pointed it out to my mom who had no idea what trouble it would cause in the years to come. i even stopped gawking at the big city and all its non-white people as i played a little game of "find the orfn tag" in my head. that shit was everywhere even civilians like myself noticed it. a writer was born. awesome...............
