Now HERE'S a bright note "A Better Life, But Not in the U.S."

Jennifer Beauprez of The Denver Post reports:

"Many foreign nationals no longer consider America as the land of opportunity. Economists, businesspeople and other experts say growing number of immigrants are moving back to their home countries of Pakistan, India, China, Singapore and Vietnam--countries with job and economic growth sometimes double or triple that of the United States."

(And I thought they came here because they wanted to be loyal Americans and enjoy our way of life. Seems like what they really wanted was a high-paying job and lots of money. Darn. We're really going to miss them.)

"I go to China and see people's eyes sparkling," Zhang said. "It's full of life and vitality there. In contrast to the U.S., where we're reaching a plateau, perhaps going down."

"Economists say the exodus could hurt the U.S. economy because America is losing some of the world's smartest and most entrepreneurial people."

"Yet there is a trade-off. said Zhang, the Chinese consultant. The people who spent time in America suffer from what she calls "re-entry shock" when returning home. In China, houses typically are cramped, and houses are bureaucratic, offering little room for advancement or personal initiative, Zhang said. And in India, simple things such as getting phone service, banking or receiving health care can take weeks.

"I think it's a loss for the long run," said Wobbekind, the economist. "Over the centuries, that's what made our country great, having a melting pot of different cultures and talents. We're accidentally exporting some smart people who could easily compete with us."

How can this be a bad thing? We bring these people here so they can learn and develop, and RETURN HOME so they can help improve things THERE. I think we have quite enough Pakistani Ph.D's running convenience stores and Chinese dentists and computer programmers driving taxi's here in the U.S. This idea that it is some kind of shame for them to live THERE and us to live HERE, and for the wretched Third World to bring their living standards up to "civilized" is erroneous. There is powerful economic growth in Asia? Wonderful. India is becoming a technological wellspring? Super. Now when we go there on vacation, we'll at least be able to drink the water in their restaurants.

lately i've been thinking the real promise lands are canada and australia. in canada, i could smoke pot without getting harassed, i would have health insurance, and i would not live in a country that was run by george bush. yea there's sars over there but who fucking cares? sars shmars. australia---beautiful weather. killer surfing--you can still do pieces on clean trains, all these crazy outdoor cement skateparks, i love girls with the accent to. australia is also not run by george bush. i think america is going to shit. if dubyah gets re-elected i'm seriously going to consider leaving the country. or i guess if i stay here i'll go back to hawaii, which i don't really count as part of america. this place is headed down the tubes.

well mr vega, i am a citizen of both australia and canada. and while i cannot speak about canada because i have never lived there, australia is not all that it is cracked up to be. australia is not run by bush, but it is run by the prime minister, john howard. a lying bastard completely void of charisma.

The only thing I'm getting out of your post is you coming off as particularly RACIST! I'm rather confused as to the reason of this thread, other than for you to rant against whoever wrote the article and also to display and beat your patriotical wang on the internet.

And just to let you know, in Singapore (I lived there for two years, and its one of the mentioned 'Land of Opportunities' in the article) the tap water is much cleaner than any US city (because in my experience, most people dont drink tap water in any US city, they stick to either some sort of cleansing system like Brita, or bottled water, while tap water in Singapore is widely drunk, and it is considered safe)... Tokyo and Singapore in my experience run a lot smoother and faster than American systems (in terms of public transport, electronic service, ie, computers, phone, etc...) not to mention Singapore is MUCH cheaper lifestyle wise for apartments/housing/food/whatever. They also have a cheap government sponsored low cost housing system(akin to 'the projects' of the United States) called HDB's, except they are well maintained and continue in a low crime rate of living unlike the projects of America like in parts of NYC and Philly, where crime is rampant and governmental money aid (thanks BUSH!) has been ousted. They also have a very good public school system, and Singaporean students are on the top of the list score-wise...

I'm just adding contrast to your second-rate opinion of certain countries that you really don't know much about, considering you live in the USA. I didn't really see the point of the article, but I think that there are many other countries with more opportunity than the USA (especially since USA is in the worse economic debt in history, and has more prisoners and handgun owners than any other country in the world) including Singapore, Canada, and Australia.

lets face it canada is awsome, we're about to legalize pot, we got mountains for snowboarding, a lot of trains even ones from california run thru my home town, plus onstead of gunshops on every corner where people about to go psycho and murder their boss we have Tim Hortons on every corner, where they can plot to kill their boss and get away with it :scowl:

Since we live in a good old free country

...more or less, anybody who doesn't like it here is 100% able to leave any time they want to do so. So far as I know, no country on earth has legalized marijuana. Narcotics in general are treated like a much more serious crime in much of the world than it is here in the U.S. In Singapore you're looking at ten years for pot, and much more for "hard drugs" like heroin or cocaine. In many Southeast Asian countries one can receive a life sentence for smuggling heroin, and several Australian dumbasses were executed by hanging there for smuggling heroin. It's like "What? You didn't know smuggling heroin was illegal?"

Even in Holland posession of marijuana is technically illegal, but the penalty is so low they just use the law to hassle troublemakers. Some guy who is getting rowdy in a bar and has hashish in his pocket that he just finished buying a half hour before in the same bar can get charged with possession and given a ticket, or could be arrested and hauled off to jail for a few hours. The cops use the pot laws in Amsterdam the same way that American cops use loitering laws. "Move on, or you are getting arrested."

Canadian cops are no different than cops anywhere else. They enforce the laws that have been passed by the legislatures in Canada. I got jacked around by the RCMP and also the city cops in Vancouver, B.C. and also by the Canadian Customs people going into and coming out of Canada, but it was almost forty years ago, back when the Canadian authorities were hassling every American longhair who came across the border, because they thought we were all draft dodgers. Yes, Canada let American war resisters live there during the Vietnam War. NO, they did not like it, and American draft resisters got fucked with plenty by both authorities and civilians who disagreed. They considered the American immigrants to just be a potential problem. What the RCMP told me was "The U.S. let you communist bastards out, and now we have to put up with your nonsense. If you so much as spit on the street and I see you, I'll have you deported." Canada is a beautiful country, but it has plenty of laws and regulations that I consider extremely repressive. I could never live in either Canada or Australia, because they both have disarmed their populations. Crime skyrocketed in Australia when they forced the civilians to disarm. Strong-arm robberies of elderly people, women and disabled people went up FORTY PER CENT in one year, and has continued to rise slowly. Home invasions went up, armed robberies of businesses where the robber used a knife went up, an forcible rape has increased dramatically. Any time a government disarms the people, genocide and dictatorship follows. Australia is virtually empty, especially the interior. But Malaysia is not empty, it is vastly overpopulated, and has the second largest army in that part of the world (Vietnam has the largest.) The civilian population of Australia is disarmed and helpless. What does this situation tell you? The real question, in my mind, is why in the hell would the government of Australia do something so profoundly STUPID? It's like they did not learn a thing from WWII.

As far as immigration and the U.S. goes, I have absolutely no problem with immigration from wherever, so long as the immigrant has gone through the proper procedures, is AUTHORIZED to be here and has a visa or resident alien card, supports himself or herself without being on welfare, and obeys the laws of the U.S. Anybody who lives here should be loyal to, and patriotic towards the United States. If they do not like the U.S., what are they doing HERE? Let them go some place that they prefer more, Germany or UK or Sweden or Botswana, wherever. Since the U.S. is so unpleasant, let them pack up their shit and move on. I am not particularly sympathetic towards people who move here from another country just for a high-paying job. The guy is taking a job that could have been filled by an American to start with (the company that hired him from India or Taiwan or wherever did so to save money) and I will not shed any tears when he takes his me-first ass on down the road. I noted in the paper the other day that hundreds of foreign-born members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in Iraq are getting the fast track to U.S. citizenship. Yay! Those are the guys we want, people who are LOYAL to the U.S., regardless of where they came from. Let these gold-digging weiners who haul ass because the U.S. is allegedly no longer the best place to get rich go do it somewhere else. They don't deserve to live here in the first place, and we should never have let them in to start with.

I'm getting awful tired of people screaming "racist" every time an opinion is stated that doesn't agree with the liberal left socialist agenda. Some of the biggest racists I know are black. Some of the most xenophobic people I know are Asian (have you ever tried dating an Asian girl? Sheesh. Wait till you get to meet her parents.) Some of the most race-hatred filled people I have ever met are Latinos from Mexico, and the poorer they are, the more likely to be intolerant. My wife, pregnant with our daughter, got harrassed by a pair of homosexual men on the streets of San Francisco, and taunted with the epithet "breeder." Shit happens, people are stupid.

It doesn't make me a racist because I want my country and my culture to remain the way I like it. Everybody else feels the same way, all over the world. I've been to Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Spain, Sicily, Turkey, Greece, Japan, Okinawa, South Korea, and the Phillipine Islands. I have friends from many other countries who are immigrants to the U.S., and co-workers from many different countries. I get along fine with 99% of them.

You guys that squawk "racist" at the drop of a hat have never met a genuine racist, probably. Believe me, there is a big difference, and hate is the essential element.

You may feel tired of being called a racist but you certainly do a lousy job trying to prove you're not. Among all people that carry an IQ in here you have used the single most cheap racial slurs ("Sweden is a third world shithole" "India is becoming a technological wellspring? Super. Now when we go there on vacation, we'll at least be able to drink the water in their restaurants"..to many to add) not to mention forming racial opinnions in all seriousness. For the 100th time, i aint calling you a racist out of pollitical corectness, or because i get shocked when you "call it like it is". I'm calling you a racist cause everysingle thing you say directs me there, trying to exclude your self from that category by saying that there are bigger racists than you doesnt work...Instead of realising human nature and that we all fall under the same, you keep on listing the black/asian/mexican/gay racists you have encountered. People fall under categories as a whole and in this case: Racists and Non racists..you trully belong in the first group.

And just for the record, your country has very brief history and its culture is based solely on the fact that people from all around formed it in the first place. Its called multiculture as in 'melting pot'. As an american you should have more respect for immigrants AND people who are just oportunistic than anyone else in the world.

You need to shut your fucking mouth clown. The only reason why all that "good stuff" happens is because the government is much stricter and in control of their people there. I know damn well in any of those countries, especially china, that you have no rights as a person there. Don't you ever hear on the news, where the miliatary there just runs people over with tanks? Isn't singapore the place where they executed a mentally retarted person for graffiti? Exactly, You can talk about all the "great" stuff they have such as low crime, and a good school system, but please realize that those things don't make that country more desirable to live in.

The United States is the best country.. We feed the hungry, Give oppurtunity to the lower class, Nuture senior citizens, and allow a free life. Please don't say Canada is a better place to live, because I know someone who lives there, and they like America more. In Canada, your free healthcare is an HMO, meaning the doctors are much less likely to give you exceptional treatment.

Regarding the topic at hand, I wouldn't mind if they all move back home. Asian woman don't know how to drive, Indian people smell SO BAD, and every type of immigrant steals work from the American John Doe. They take jobs for lower pay and don't join unions, so they are basically a companies slave. I've seen it with my own 2 eyes. Plus companies want to "diversify" because having an all American work place is "racist" these days, so they hire foreigners with green cards. Such fucking bullshit.

Ps. I can prove my point much further if you'd like. I'll post pictures, tell you the names of laws and when they were put into effect, names of policies put forth by our government, and explain bullshit social standards.

Oh yeah I'm talking about REAL foreigners, the one's who hang out in industrial areas in the monrings looking for under the table work, the ones that don't know english, and don't care to know. The foreigners who recieve MY tax dollars for assistance, and don't pay their own. The one's who call me "whitey", and "cracker", and will yell "HATE CRIME" if I say "Mexican" or "Chong" back to them. The ones who'd steal my car in a heartbeat, and the ones that live 10 deep in a 2 bedroom house. The ones who fuck this country up.

Point still stands - and It's the truth.

Look at things from an outsider's view, don't "stand in the other guys shoes", stand above the whole situation with an unbiased point of view, gather as much information, then come to the conclusion. It's the only way to experience reality.

Oh yeah and to whoever is trying to hate on our President, you can blame the American citizens who exercize their right to vote for putting that man into office. And if you didn't vote, and you were capable of doing so, you have no grounds to talk politics, because you had a change to change it, and you chose not to.
