Joseph Darby, 49, of Louisville, underwent surgery after the incident Friday, University of Louisville Hospital spokeswoman Shelly Hazle said. Darby's burst eyeball could not be repaired. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is reviewing its policies. A deputy checked on Darby while he was waiting to be brought before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Steve Mershon on a motion to revoke his probation for robbery and assault. Deputy Jerri Adams saw Darby facing the back wall of the holding cell, tearing at his eyes with both hands. By the time more deputies arrived to help subdue Darby, he had torn one eye out of its socket and was trying to get the other eye, Adams said. Darby was released from the hospital Sunday. He is being held on the medical floor in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $35,000 cash bond. Darby had checked himself into Central State Hospital as recently as December, telling doctors he had suicidal thoughts and was hearing things, according to court records. But Adams and other deputies said Darby was not seen as a threat when he was placed in the holding cell Friday morning. "He was fine when we brought him in," Adams said. "He was very docile." Darby was indicted in July on a charge of second-degree robbery in the assault and robbery of a taxi driver, according to court records. He was sentenced to five years but received probation. A requirement of his probation was to attend Seven Counties Services five days a week and stay on medication. He was arrested last week after authorities said he failed to appear for a probation hearing and provided false information to a probation officer. A new court date has been set for April 8.
