They come back, mainly because Wolverine is the most popular X-Men character and they would never kill him for good, Jean Grey had to harness her Pheonix power to stop Magneto from destroying the polar axis of the earth, but that wound up killing her (or she got shot, I don't really remember). Cyclops hooked up with Emma Frost and Wolverine probably just spanks it, although in the Wolverine book he got some hairy beast thing pregnant. So the farthest they ever got was first base.
