Although it was hot spot in Japan, an earthquake, expected every 5 to 10 years struck Japan, causing a tsunami breaking through the entire pacific coast.

Japan was struck by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, unleashing a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami.

Re: 8.9 Earthquakeuake in Japan

I'm on the 24th floor in Beijing and it sent me running out of my apartment.

I was the only one, though. I was telling people that there was an EQ and they told me I was crazy. Fuck them, I'm obviously a finely tuned geological early warning mother fucker, mother fucker!!

I went back up to the apartment about 10 mins after the initial sway and shit was still swaying up to 15 mins after.

*in first with the godzilla reference!!

Re: 8.9 Earthquakeuake in Japan

I don't watch TV or listen to the radio and ended up learning about this from the internetz.

I had a ton of idiots on my facebook referring to this as "the beginning of the end of the world".

I'm hoping my friends in Japan are all OK.

Re: 8.9 Earthquakeuake in Japan

hmm, the 2005 earthquake also caused people to flip out.

i always find that end of the world shit ridiculous. my dad once said that the world will never be lucky enough to go out in one fell swoop, it'll be a long hard slog to the end of humanity. (and even then i think the world will go on...)

however, i DO wonder if there is some crazy geo-thermal shit on the horizon. the chile earthquake a few years back, and this one, are two of the most powerful ever, plus then if you count 05, it's like 3 of the top five were in the past few years. then the seismic activity in the midwest.. just seems, the earth's crust is about to set it off.

i'd laugh but then i remember i've got people in japan, hawaii, australia, fuckin hell. hopefully everyone is ok indeed.

Well people say we are due for things like this in the near to far away future, it's just a matter of time.

With that being said, this is terrible, the Tsunami footage is unreal, I live in NYC in an area that would be devastated if a Tsunami ever hit. Makes you think.

Expanded to 20ks but they are saying that the reactor vessel wasn't ruptured and radiation is subsiding.

Probably true but could possibly be BS and the govt is trying to contain the resulting chaos and coordinate things as best they can.

Re: 8.9 Earthquakeuake in Japan

*Edit, in response to the claim that only the core can explode.

That's not completely accurate. There is a lot of steam and hydrogen involved with the cooling system in reactors that can build up great pressure due to overheating of the core. The core doesn't really explode, it melts because of extreme heat. Very simplistic and I'm no physicist, not by a long fucking shot, but that is what I'm aware to be true.

The problem is that this blast has breached the containment vessel and from what I am hearing the presence of iodine and selenium 137 in the area indicates severe core damage. A specialist that we are talking to says that on a scale of 1-10, this is most definitely a 10....., as if that wasn't already obvious.

Looking further down the track from a geopolitical perspective this stands a pretty good chance of greatly improving Japan's economy and strengthening the military. However it has probably put back the agenda of some 'hawkish' elements (such as the mayor of Tokyo) who wish to see Japan as a nuclear armed country.

Re: 8.9 Earthquakeuake in Japan

This just went from a disaster to a potential catastrophe.

This.

I hope nothing worse happens, but It seems like this is just a few hours away from another Chernobyl or worse.

I was thinking about moving to Japan too,I guess I wont now.

Re: 8.9 Earthquakeuake in Japan

yeah^ i'd actually been in the middle of planning a trip to tokyo, for april of this year.

ain't happenin now.

it does feel like the world is a pressure cooker right now, just SO much happening SO many places.

the photos of the disaster are fucking unreal.i also remember looking at photos of katrina, then seeing it in person, and how the devastation is never fully captured in photography or footage.

i feel for them.

i did just finish reading about how the reactors are not facing an imminent meltdown (though clearly not out of the proverbial woods yet)
