APPRECIATE The coolest fucking bike ever- The Raleigh Chopper!
Anyone ever owned one of these babies?
I am thinking of getting one to cruise around on, giving hot chicks rides on the back.
Probably get a busted up one and then polish it up and make it great.

Do you know why the brakes are reversed in America though?

    no. do tell, im interested.

when i went to scotland, i was staying with my cousins, and we went for a ride to this castle (they live about 3 miles from one) and of course, being me i rode as fast as i could, and slamed on the brakes, not knowing they were differant there. needless to say i got a mouth full of gravel

You use your left hand to signal to other traffic which direction you'll be turning. This in turn leaves only your right hand on the bars. Since you only have one hand controlling the bike...the powers that be decided that the right hand should control the rear brake...thus allowing you to signal and slow down (without going over the bars) at the same time.

    History in a nutshell.

I may be missing something here, but why does that thing have a shifter when it doesn't have any gears?

It has 3 strumney Archer gears.
They were made in the 60s and 70s, you prolly weren't born. (I know I wasn't)

sturmey archer hubs are the bomb. they're known for being nearly bomb proof. you can even alter on into a 2 gear fixed setup. I have one sitting in my basement waiting to be altered.

    the history of sturmey archer

    edit:
oh yeah...those three gears are internal so it keeps the looks of the bike nice and clean.
