GLIK$
Well I'm sitting in class checking my gmail. When this dude I know goes, "You use gmail?" So I respond with a pleasant, why yes I do. "You shouldn't use it too much." So I'm thinking to myself, why the fuck not. I ask, he answers. "You haven't read their disclaimers and policies have you?" Nope. Well apparently this dude had worked with a computer marketing corporation and at one time had a meeting with reps from google. Asks them, hey think I can get a gmail account? The google reps told him that basically, gmail is a scheme to gather marketing information. Not to mention, ANY file you send through gmail, is saved and logged. Just thought I'd drop this info on the 12oz nation since the whole gmail fever hit. Any one got information on this? And now thinking about it, it makes sense. They allow you to use programs in which turn your gmail account into 1gb FTP storage.
SteveAustin
I wouldn't be surprised if all the major free email providers were doing this. I do find the ads that are targeted to me due to the content of my emails pretty fucking funny. sooooo off target. grocery stores have the same thing going on with those cards that they have. GLIK$
This is another reason I never EVER give my phone number or email address to the fuckhead working the counter at Best Buy. Im waiting to get an email forwarded to me with the specific points on the gmail exploits.
SteveAustin
It drives me nuts that retailers even ask for that kind of info. There are a few places around my way that ask for your zipcode. I always make one up. I have one old email address that I use for shit that absolutely requires one. Amazingly....that address gets probably 20 spam emails to every personal one. I guess I really don't care all that much about the grocery store knowing what kind of groceries I buy. I'm not really their target market. Post those details up when you get them...I'm at least curious as to the specific points.

Herbivore
yeah, that doesn't surprise me..... sneaky bitches.... i have an email address that i use for any signing up for anything. it's only purpose is to sign up for shit and collect spam, because i don't use it for personal use. and every time i check it there's like 75 new messages........ all garbage. fuck spam. Pinup
Damn, i have gmail since yesterday. Thanks for spoiling it. On the other hand, i'm pretty sure MSN or Yahoo has means of keeping track of anything that has gone in and out of your mailbox. However, i did find it quite annoying how difficult it is to delete stuff in gmail. I mean, sure, i don't mind keeping most of it but can't just delete what i fucking want ? Guest
yeah... and the FBI is tapping into every single phonecall too! There's no doubt that anything 'free' on the internet is offered with strings attached, but the same rules of privacy should apply. If I have something REALLY important to tell someone, I'll do it in person. Maybe reading the Da Vinci Code got me a bit spooked about snoopes... but really.... 98% of email is boring, redundant and pointless conversation. Guest imported_El Mamerro
I thought this was common knowledge... Google was pretty upfront when describing how their e-mail system works a loooong time ago, which is why I thought it surprising when so many people on this site, who tend to defend their privacy more vehemently than others, were so down for it. The system does crawl through your mail, and catalogues certain keywords to provide better targeted advertising, and of course SPAM detection. No personal information is archived and no human being EVER reads the e-mail. This is probably of little comfort to some, but it's fine for me. I never look at the damn ads anyways. fermentor666
Whoever is looking through my mail and advertising specifically to me is getting it all wrong. All I get is e-mails about penis enlargement and getting help satisfying my lover. I mean, I don't need any of that stuff........really I don't.....
