......this thread is one of the best posts i ever read on this thing. i felt almost like writing my own looooong list of similiar things...but then i figured itd be better to just leave it as it is....i think everyone has that kind of list, but what i like about graffiti writers is that we all live a sort of dual life....a very criminal "out of bounds" lifelstyle at times, but yet, its all a very creative and artisitc lifestyle, very selflessly dedicating our time and sefety to create imagery and ideas...so the dichotomy is STRIKING...here you have all these lost souls bouncing around the US, sort of living the same life.....real normal, mundane lives spliced with drama and high adventure.... reading the list reminded me of that contrast in my own life, and of that in all my graffiti friends' lives. and also, how i dont really see it other people, in non-writers. maybe its elevating our own experience, i dont know....

instead of a list, this relaity comes to me in the form of contrasts, deep, dark, contrasts of color and form.... i like stories.

i remember driving to go swimming with writers at 3 am, pool hopping in suburban philadelphia. the warm summer nights and the conversations in crowded compact cars....the fence hopping, the frolicking.....all sort of like a peaceful romp, but still very risky and criminal in a way. and i always felt like, man, theres really just this whole generation of kids, like skater, bike-kids, hiphop people, emo kids, writers, poets, film students, graffiti kids, etc, etc...thats exists just outside the fringe of morality/reality and yet, like clark kent/superman, we all have moms and little sisters and regular jobs with with regular people. watch the same episodes of saved by the bell or the wedding story on TLC. and yet, we all ahve these wierd little rituals that bring us together...creeping through crack houses at 4 am or squeezing between freight railroad couplings at daybreak. racking film and paint, then eating next to some jocks at taco bell....and having them look at you, trying to PLACE you all, figure out what your DEAL is....why does one kid look like a punk rocker but hes eating with some white kid who tlaks mad hiphop and the other kid just looks like a borke ass bum...but they all vibe so well...watching suburban moms or ghetto kids look quizzically at writers in taco bells around the country trying to figure out what gives....its amazingly refreshing to know that we have that little niche carved out for ourselves.....i remember playing wall ball on college campuses with ONOROK and just laughing and being silly and meeting cute little hardcore girls and not even talking about graffiti but talking about politics or tim robbins movies (good choice, mocha) ...or working in pizza shops and coffe shops and leaning on the counter talking to your 29-year old manager about her car payments and how her boyfriend likes to go camping...or talking to kids playing on the train tracks about snakes and how to pick them up.....its all kind of like a list i guess, but i see it as though graffiti writers have this highly perceptive way of seeing ourselves in the midst of something bigger, like were party to a bigger secret, unlike my struggling manager at the pizza shop, whi is good, but sees life without peripheral vision....everything is between the lines and full steam ahead. when you see your writer friend whos stolen more merchandise than anyone and done tags on peoples catwalks buy a kid an ice cream cone and talk about pokemon in a strip mall parking lot - it makes you see things in a different light, and appreciate both the fantastic and the mundane. the beauty of a list like this, is, for me, that you get a glimpse into another writer's heart, and, well, its not far from looking in the mirror....instead of looking out over denver, maybe its pittsburgh, or philly, or even that night in montreal, or rome....but its all the same...i think writers share a zest for life and the appreciation of people, pure and simple. i love this life, and to the day i die, ill never forget every vision of insanity and serenity that graffiti helped me understand. only after youve travled into the heart of darkness can you appreciate the light......by testing the boundries of morality, we define our own reality, and like colonel kurzt in f.f.coppola's masterpiece, we declare our motto: apocalypse now.

peace to everyone doing their thing both inside and outside the lines....heres my advice to anyone that seeks to embrace this dichotomy: find the fantastic in the mundane, and the mundane in the fantasitc... for instance, next time you have to talk to that boring dead-head or jock kid at school or work, try to really discern whats unique about him/her...poke and prod a little and try to establish something that makes them a story worth telling, and not just a cliche....and , conversely, next time, you're on a rooftop or on a yard or pushing the limits of your own relaity, stop and look at how the roof is designed, what IS the buliding your on, how old, is it cinderblock or brick? who lives there or works there? what kind of rocks line the tracks? what kind of junk is laying on the trackside? what kind of dings and dents are in the train? how did they get there? so on forth.......i think this dualistic appreciation is the beauty of living outside the lines and its the first thing that struck me when i read the list....thanks for makin my day, bro.

I just dunno...I hear all these stories of kids doing graffiti all day then doing cocaine and heroin all night and beating people near death for their paint and it just makes me happy to think that i can still be on their level without lowering myself to their level. i dunno. i just like to let things out sometime. and reading your reply just made me smile. now im gonna go buy some pizza. thanks man.

Nise that post was soooo good. That reminds me so much of my best friends. You're right in so many ways. People like you and Aeon give off such an enlightened vibe.. I love people who stop fighting the push and pull of the pendulem and just learn to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Here's my list, I won't be offended if no one reads it, but I just felt like I should write one too.

-complex conversations with complete strangers.

-Taking the bus around, watching the city fly by behind glass windows.

-Talking to little 12 year old skater boys and making them look cool in front of their friends.

-Climbing up fire escapes in dark ally's.

-Sitting on rooftops talking until the sun comes up.

-Doing legal walls and getting at least 3 offers from people who want you to come paint their garage for money. (I never take them up on it, but it's nice to know the art's appreciated by more than just graff headz).

-Getting all dressed up for Halloween, and pretending to be someone like Cleopatra all night.

- First kisses.

-Those rare phone conversations that last 8 hours, all through the night.

-Feeling like no matter what happens, you'll always have your best friend by your side.

-Every now and then when my Mom talks to me and gets teary eyed just to tell me she's "proud" of me.

-The fact that my dad still gives me hugs and kisses on the forehead sometimes before I go to sleep.

-The first ciggarette of the day.

-Finding a $20 bill in your pocket that you didn't know you lost.

-being tickled until you have to pee.

-tickling someone until they have to pee.

i reached out and handed him that quarter i was gonna leave behind----the smile on that mans face , (he had never handled a new quarter) , brought a world of things into perspective---love, chance, happiness, meaning, and the unknown.....

hmmm...some add-ons....

i liked the vince vaughn reference to swingers. i just saw MADE last night with my best friend. hes like my movie buddy, and one of the reasons i love him is becasue hes one of the few people who share my appreciation for Owen Wilson. ("i might not know karate, but i know ka-razy!!!"). Anyone who enjoys movies like swingers, bottle rocket, shanghai noon, should see Zoolander, coming out soon, and Made, out now (also Ghost WOrld...really dope). anyways...one of the scenes from Swingers that i love, which fits in great with this post, is the scene when theyre playing ice hockey on sega, and dude goes to the door or the bathorrom or something (havent seen it in a month or 2!!) and the other cat unpauses it, keeps fighting, and then repauses it. the other dude comes back like, "what the fuck?!!" that shit is funny real life shit that cracks me up. and it reminded me of a great "list" story from college. me and my nerdy roomates would go to lots of house parties in college, which were almost always nothing more than unsanctioned frat parties. needless to say, girls in black butt-pants and tanktops never talk to us. so, most of our party going time involved plotting on how to steal as much shit outta houses as we could. our best come up was probably the time everyone passed out and we pulled a car up to the house and stole an entire stereo and entertainment system...but thats not as funny a sotry. the story im reminded of is this one party where we were drinking out of plastic cups in a ratty ass kitchen, and its that time of the night where everyones drunk and total strangers are packed into the kitchen, talking about "life"...yikes!! and me and my boys would have fun just pretending to talk to these kind of cats and would take turns making up stories about our lives, and we'd see who could keep a straight face for the longest, without letting on that we were totally lying. (this is mad fun. college girls will believe anything if you keep a straight face.) anywho, this party was particularly funny cause this one college chick's dad had just gotten divorced, and so she BROUGHT him to a keg party. so were in the kitchen with some lacrosse type dudes, an abercrombie chick and her 50yr old dad, some phish types, and some magic-card type dudes. and were taking turns going upstairs and stealing as many CDs as we can, and just generally getting hammered. then, the girl with the dad puts her schoolbag down on the table...and my boy just peeks in it, all bored and sees that theres a nintendo 64 with cables and controllers and all in the bag...so hes like, "yo! lets get this!!!" but its a small ass kitchen and everyone sfacing each other and the keg is in the conrer, so like no one is leaving the room...in fact, more people keep coming in to refill.

so, my boys like, you get the bag, ill distract these cats. so he starts rapping to the dad dude, and finally is like, yo, you ever do a keg stand? and the dude was all like no, no, i couldnt...blahblah...and then he gets all these like stoner jocks and college kids into it, like "do it!do it!" and, shit, we all know how frat types love their keg stands....so, ill be damned the whole crowd surrounds him and lifts him up....so i take the bag and dump everything into another bag...i walk out back to the back yard, and see that you could hop the fence and get to the next street between two rowhomes....so i throw the bag over the fence. while im walking back, i notice footprints in the snow to a bunch of junk in the back yard...and i go peep it. and , under a pile of shit is an entire 30 pack of pabst blue ribbon. im guessing it was the "after the kegs kicked" house stash. (you all know how nothings safe in a fridge at a party.) so i throw that over the fence into the same snowbank.

i cut bank in, and the girl and the dad are like, huggin each other, like all drunk, in some sort of warped kodak moment...and were all like crackin up, like lets, roll!!! and my friends are like, yo lets at least keep drinking till we bounce, and im like, naw, i got you, i got it!!!

so we dip out, roll around the block, cut up this alley, and scoop the case and the nintendo. we walk all the way back to our crib, pounding beers while runnin through the snow, throwin snowballs and so on. by the time we got home, we were all still wasted, with half a case of pabst left, and we opened up the bag. not only was it a n64, but the james bond game as well. we hooked it up, invited over my boy with 2 other controllers (at 3:45 am) and played drunk 4-player bond until the sun came up.

we woke up at noon and went to the indian buffet, our hangover spot. then prepared to do it all again saturday night. nothing like being young.
