Guest Posted January 12, 2004 Share Posted January 12, 2004 It might sound a bit corny, but I picked up Seabiscuit on a long train ride and really enjoyed it. It's a slice of a different time in American history were Men were gamblers and women had dinner ready. Well not so much.... but it's a great tale of 4 people (well 3 people and a horse) who came from behimd to win it all. A good read if you like historical non-fiction. I borrowed it from a friend (he got it from the bargain bin at Chapters), and am not expecting anything groundbreaking. It is about the psyche of the German people when Hitler came into power. I think next I will finally pick up Anna Kerinina (whatever it’s called) by Tolstoy. That guy is really good. So…what book are you reading? One really good essay book my buddy’s dad lent me is “the selected essays of Sir Francis Bacon.” It’s sorta self help, you might say. Written in the 16th century, and pretty darn insightful. I read "Light in August" two weeks ago, then just last week I read "As I lay dying" while waiting for my long-delayed plane to arrive at the terminal, and now I'm starting "The Sound and the Fury". After I'm done that, I want to read "To Kill A Mockingbird" since I've only ever seen the movie (which I love to death), but after that I'm gonna steer away from the books about the south. "A gigantic spaceship arrives in the stratosphere to dump some black disks onto Earth. Touch these things at your own risk, however; unsuspecting souls who handle the disks receive a sting, soon followed by flulike symptoms and ending in a kind of zombie assimilation into the alien consciousness. And make no mistake: these aliens are up to no good--we know this because the victims of the UFO-flu are soon transformed into hideous reptilian creatures." This may seem a bit low brow, but does anyone have any input regarding Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 novels? I used to read him a lot in my early teenage years, and really liked his stuff. Dude is supposed to be one the most brilliant art critics of his age, that worked alot in europe and america and helped modernism a lot. I liked it, and Of Mice and Men, but beyond that steinbeck kinda bores me. But I dont think I dislike him nearly as much as chicken bone seems to.
