Guest
It might sound a bit corny, but I picked up Seabiscuit on a long train ride and really enjoyed it. It's a slice of a different time in American history were Men were gamblers and women had dinner ready. Well not so much.... but it's a great tale of 4 people (well 3 people and a horse) who came from behimd to win it all. A good read if you like historical non-fiction. DETO
Thanks for the response Kilo, I surprisingly enjoyed the movie, I'm sure the book would be better as almost every book is better than the movie. I might just give the book a go.

slave_one
when i was younger and still in high school, i used to read a lot... but now that i'm older, i'm in front of the computer all the time, so i'm pretty much braindead. all the vampire books by anne rice, and the witching hour and all the books that follow it. very good fiction, and erotic. Weapon X
What Book Are You Reading? Pt. 7 I just started a book called “Seduced By Hitler”. I borrowed it from a friend (he got it from the bargain bin at Chapters), and am not expecting anything groundbreaking. It is about the psyche of the German people when Hitler came into power. I think next I will finally pick up Anna Kerinina (whatever it’s called) by Tolstoy. That guy is really good. So…what book are you reading? Weapon X
Oh, I didn’t see Deto’s thread. Can Channel Zero handle two threads on books on the first page? We’ll see, we’ll see.

Weapon X
I’ve heard of that book, Tesseract. It’s essays, right? You have any idea what they’re on? One really good essay book my buddy’s dad lent me is “the selected essays of Sir Francis Bacon.” It’s sorta self help, you might say. Written in the 16th century, and pretty darn insightful. Ski Mask
I'm on a bit of a faulkner bender right now. I read "Light in August" two weeks ago, then just last week I read "As I lay dying" while waiting for my long-delayed plane to arrive at the terminal, and now I'm starting "The Sound and the Fury". After I'm done that, I want to read "To Kill A Mockingbird" since I've only ever seen the movie (which I love to death), but after that I'm gonna steer away from the books about the south. Maybe pick up another Kenziburo Oe novel.
ubejinxed
i'm reading 'invasion' a sci-fi book by robin cook, it's kinda cheesy i found it in a bin for free. "A gigantic spaceship arrives in the stratosphere to dump some black disks onto Earth. Touch these things at your own risk, however; unsuspecting souls who handle the disks receive a sting, soon followed by flulike symptoms and ending in a kind of zombie assimilation into the alien consciousness. And make no mistake: these aliens are up to no good--we know this because the victims of the UFO-flu are soon transformed into hideous reptilian creatures." HAAAH oh gawd that sounds bad. aahahaha

Weapon X
Delayed planes are key for reading. So is waiting forever in court. This may seem a bit low brow, but does anyone have any input regarding Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 novels? I used to read him a lot in my early teenage years, and really liked his stuff. I hear that the Rainbow 6 books have good action, and I wanna get away from all this Russian stuff I’ve been reading lately.

Dude is supposed to be one the most brilliant art critics of his age, that worked alot in europe and america and helped modernism a lot. I'm expecting possitive sharp views by a critic...not an easy one to find. I'll let you know when i'm done though.

My friend has been strongly urging me to read Tortilla Flats. He says that it’s great if you’re a drinker, too. How was East of Eden? *edit – you said you really liked it. Ski Mask
to this day I think I'm the only person in my high school english class who actually read all of East of Eden. I liked it, and Of Mice and Men, but beyond that steinbeck kinda bores me. But I dont think I dislike him nearly as much as chicken bone seems to. (he'll be in here later to elaborate I'm sure)

I gotta get on that sometime, too. I hear it’s really hard to understand, though. Lots of symbolism, to say the least. My well read buddy said that he needed an accompanying book to go with it must to understand things.
