RumPuncher
.... but does anyone actually take martial arts? I'm really thinking about signing up to do some martial arts to tone up my mind, body and spirit. I was thinking of akido, but then I found a place right next to where I work that has late night classes. (well... kind of late) that teaches GoJu-Ryu. (a karate style). And now I've got an introductory class this saturday. So anyone else do martial arts? And remember being a kid and thinking about just how cool it would be to have a black belt? Well that's wasted on kids. Adults actualy have the time a focus to get it done. I'm not really about all the fighting, as I'm about the art itself, but it would be damn interesting to get into. nomadawhat
yeah, you don't want to fuck with the green belt tae-kwon-do master here. i took it about 4 years ago (my master taught bruce lee the art of breaking....things), i really enjoyed it but at the time i had school and little money. i have thought about joining a form of martial arts again, but that damn money factor keeps coming up. there is a krav-maga place right across from where i work. thats what i would like to do. talk about some ass-whooping, even though you weren't. oh and the one thing i hated about it was there were always so many little kids in the class. try to find adult only classes. i hated kicking those kids in the head. I cant kick very high yet so the kids will have to do for the moment. My whole thing is I'm getting a little older (12oz grandpas represent) and I dont really have many of the constructive hobbies I used to have. You know shit like riding the skateboard for 8 hours a day or going biking on some mud trail in the rain. There's nothing that really makes me focus as like that these days. so anyone want to explain the belt system to me?
nomadawhat
this was in tae-kwon-do, not sure how it applies to other forms... White Signifies innocence, as that of a beginning student who has no previous knowledge of Taekwon-Do. Yellow Signifies the Earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root as Taekwon-Do foundation is being laid. Green Signifies the growth as the Taekwon-Do skills begins to develop like the green of a young plant. Blue Signifies the Heaven, towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Taekwon-Do progresses. Red Signifies danger, cautioning the student to excersise control and warning the opponent to stay away. Black Opposite of white, therefore, signifying the maturity and proficiency in Taekwon-Do. It also indicates the wearer's imperviousness to darkness and fear.
Gunm
my gf took Cho lay Fut kung fu when she was younger and she knows how to fight...i mean really fight. That girl can hit fucking hard when she wants to. I called her a bitch once and only once because when i did she ran across the room and sank her fist into my chest. i had a goddamn apple sized bruise the next day. There was actually an underground fight tape with her in it beating some girls ass to the ground with kung fu back in the day. it circulated around fremont for a few years and then dissapeared. Spike
I've taken Karate, Judo and Aikido at various points and had to stop cuz of other non-related injuries... And the verdict is that Karate is wack. If they're teaching a full form of Aikido, including strikes, locks and the usual stuff, you will get more practical functions and much more satisfaction. I can tell you, one of the most satisfying moments in my life was grabbing hold of the arm of a dude who was twice as heavy as me, stepping two steps forward, and having the guy have to do a full flip in the air to avoid having his arm broken. Now that's ninja. I know a place in my area that does ninjitsu classes, but it's invite only... so I'm trying to befriend the guy that runs it. Running up walls is on the list for 2004! nomadawhat
with tae-kwon-do it was very traditional. there were belt testing ceremonies every 4 months, and the whole school would come and watch you test, so it took a while to gain your belts. if you failed or missed you'd have to wait until the next test. you seem like the type of person who could really get into it, the traditions, the respect, the learning. i say go for it. Guest
whoa... it's like you know me. yeah spikers... I agree that most karate is a little dry and wrapped up in boring routine and tradition but this school seems a little different. The fact that it's brand new and there's only one teacher makes me think that he'll be a little more open to doing what his students want. He was telling me that there's some old guys in the class who are just doing it for the workout, but there's also some people who are all about the sparring and such. I'm really just feeding a curiosity at this point. a friend of mine is doing an invite only weapons training class taught by a guy who was taught by one of Bruce Lee's early students. I guess that's like grandpa-sensi? He says it's just nuts!! For knife training they will use markers and actually make contact. I'm thinking..... 'you really want me to hit you with this mop?' 26SidedCube
I took Aikido for something like 4 years. Dad's a 2nd degree blackbelt, teaches courses with Kashida Sensei (one of the last remaining founders to bring it to America... the Aristocricy of Aikido if you will). Aikido's hardcore effective, but peaceful as hell. You will never learn how to attack, only how to use other's attack momentum to your advantage. There are no strikes in traditional Aikido, these techniques were incorporated by Americans and Japanese police and now the styles are just taught under general 'Aikido' you might take at a YMCA. If you're looking to brutally beat ass I'm suggesting Kempo, Mui Tai, or Pen Jot Silot (sic?). Pen Jot Silot is derived from Eastern (Mandrin?) knife fighting and there is something like 200 styles of it (many of which un-taught formally) in existance... I was told this is the single most brutal marshall art there is... next to the shit they train Navy Seals, but those guys are insane and live in California. gfreshsushi
there's this anarchist dojo kinda near my house, they offer a couple different classes, and one of them is some knife-fighting thing, which sounded pretty interesting. it's great because if you can't afford to pay for it, you can do maintenance work around the place in exchange. i just don't have the time to dedicate to something like that...yet. I had class with a few bigger guys that had trouble with it, but they still managed. A little extra weight won't complicate things at all for you, though... but if you're 50-100 pounds overweight you might wanna try jogging before self defense.
