Huge quake strikes off coast of California

Discussion started by Theo Huxtable - Jun 14, 2005

Yo, they just said like 10 minutes ago that a large quake just hit off the coast of northern California and that the waves are supposed to hit the coastline sometime after 9pm. It's about 8:50pm as I say this now. They say the tsuanami warning was given to everyone from Vancouver Island, BC all the way down to the California-Mexico border.

*Damn, just this past Sunday I was in Santa Monica and felt a quake at about 8:40 in the morning, which was centered near Palms Springs. I think the Big One is approaching soon...

I can't help to wonder if the "Big One" is going to hit soon. Lately there have been a bunch of quakes, and we haven't had a big rumbler for quite some time..

^I think the official Big One is the one that comes from the San Andreas fault line, and near L.A. it runs out in the Mojave Desert. A lot of people were trying to say the one in '94 was the big one, but that came from a small fault line. Not a major fault line from a tectonic plate, like the San Andreas. But I think the real Big One from San Andreas should hit within the next 5-10 years.

There's been alot of quakes there lately. Something going on?
Here's a chart of all recent earthquakes:
    http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/

wow that's alot of earthquakes... I'm seeing about 50 in the last day or so... It says there are 866. looks like 3 are a category 5 or higher. One is of magnitude 7 off the coast... that must be where the tsunami warning originated.
Alot of them look to be following a fault line... is that the San Andreas fault?

Here's a list of recent big quakes in the region:
    http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/quakes.big.html

    Crescent City you say?
    MAP 7.2 2005/06/14 19:50:54 41.328N 125.868W 10.0 147 km (91 mi) WSW of Crescent City, CA

    7.2
    That's that big one.

^none of the last few quakes came from the san andreas fault. if it did, they'd be huge and do lots of damage. they were from smaller subsidiary fault lines created by the san andreas.
