habits that harm

Like many others, you probably have a bunch of disgusting habits. While the following unattractive behaviours probably won’t kill you, they can be harmful and some can cause long-term damage so take your nails out of your mouth and read on.

    Nail and finger biting
Calgary dermatologist Dr. Thomas Enta says biting nails and surrounding skin exposes the area to bacteria from the mouth.
Risks: If you do this for a long time you can actually distort your fingernails and ruin your career as a potential hand model. Even worse, you can wind up with infected fingers. For serious infections, Enta says, needles of cortisone are injected into the nail fold. Ouch!
Quit it: For incentive to keep from making your hands a main course, you can try the bitter-tasting nail stuff or apply a pretty nail polish. — You wouldn’t want to ruin a nice manicure, would you?

    Pimple-popping
In your attempts to make those zits disappear you can actually make them bigger. If you don’t squeeze all of the oil out, they can grow larger and look worse.
Risks: Pimples that leave scars are usually the big ones. So if you squeeze a small one, it can get larger and if you try to excavate a biggie, the damage can be permanent.
Quit it: Ask a dermatologist or an esthetician to extract your pimples. And if you miss the inexplicable thrill of pimple-popping, become an esthetician.

    Heel-peeling
Tough, leathery skin builds up, one little peel leads to another and soon the skin on your feet is broken and sore.
Risks: If you have a break in the skin, you’re more likely to develop an infection, says Dr. Martie Gidon, a Toronto-based dermatologist. "The infection can spread up your leg, become cellulitis and you will need intravenous antibiotics to treat it."
Quit it: Ask a dermatologist if the dry, flaky skin is caused by psoriasis, dermatitis or eczema and, if it is, have it treated. However, if it is a simple case of dryness, draw a foot bath and add a some oil to the water, use exfoliating creams, apply petroleum jelly and wrap your feet in plastic cling-wrap overnight.

    Nose-picking
This bad habit brings bacteria into your nose. And your fingernails — the ones you’ve stopped biting — can break the skin, creating a habitat for infections.
Risks: In the skin around the nostril, infection can set in. You can get nosebleeds and, in more serious cases, a perforated nasal septum (the cartilage that divides your nose into two halves). Fixing that requires surgery.
Quit it: Remember Billy, in your fifth-grade class, and how disgusting he looked picking his nose.

    Ear-probing
People reach for keys, pens, cotton-tip swabs and, of course, their fingers when their ears are itchy or feel plugged. But these instruments can push what’s in there further in.
Risks: Dr. Andrea Garland, a Saint John N.B, ear, nose and throat specialist says wax is there for a reason. If you manage to get it out, the skin in your ear can become dry and crack, leaving it open to infection. If you push a cotton-tip swab too far into your ear you can perforate your ear drum or damage little bones, causing permanent hearing loss.
Quit it: Think of how gross that wax feels on your fingers. Or worse, taste it.
