The series began with Jimmy, a young English boy, playing near the edge of a river with his magical talking gold flute, Freddie (or Fweddie, as Jimmy so fondly referred to him), board a boat that beckons to them. As it drifts out to sea, the evil Witchiepoo, seeking Freddie to add to her collection of magical possessions, casts a spell over the boat. After escaping the boat and swimming to the shore of the enchanted Living Island, Jimmy is rescued by its mayor, H.R. Pufnstuf, who also happened to be an orange dragon dressed in cowboy duds. Pufnstuf befriends the young lad and takes him under his wing. The series revolves around the wacky adventures of Jimmy (played by Jack Wild of "Oliver!" fame) and Freddy the flute after becoming stranded on Living Island where everything was personified - books had faces, houses could sneeze and trees could talk, not to mention all the regular friendly denizens which more or less looked like an animal of some sort.
