GRE

I'm scheduled for August 26th and am very nervous.

I was going to take a Kaplan course but they are about $1,000 and I think that is just crazy.

So I bought a book to study techniques from instead.

Have any of you guys taken this test?

How did you do? (Good, bad, average)

Have any tips you would like to share?

I've read only half a million people take this test worldwide a year so I'm not expecting too many responses.

i didn't really study anything except vocab

(but i took calculus II in college so math didn't faze me)

english is not easy

it is weird as you are taking the test and you know you are getting shit right because the questions are getting harder

then you know you got one wrong, (or two)

because then they get really easy and its fucking freaky

my advice would be to not let yourself get psyched out by that.

i did just fine with very little preparation

(english 620,

math 600,

and analytical 660)

analytical was insane, and insanely hard

they had you figure shit like "george and john work together on tuesday, john doesn't work on wednesday, jill won't work with george, jenn won't work on thursday or with john on monday, george works with jenn on friday....now make a weekly schedule that fits them all)

??!!!!

but they took this shit off the GRE, so as far as i can tell, you got off easy haha

(i think they took it off, am i wrong?

if it is still on the test, buy a kaplan or princeton review BOOK and practice)

you'll do fine woman, just beef up on that vocab

(a good way is to do the new york times crossword every day with a dictionary)

..also, yeah, get a GRE PREP BOOK and take a couple practice tests

it's a pain, but you should

My older brother is curently getting ready for the test, I'm not sure if he's has

enrolled for the test yet but I know he bought the book as well and has been

going at it for about 2 months now. He'll be going to get in a masters program

at University of Chicago.

Study hard and don't slack, it'll pay off.

that clip was great.

I'm really just scared of the math section.

I'm beefing up on my vocab but math....I hate.

And I do have one of those Kaplan books.

Symbols, its awesome you did so well. I just can't wait till this shit is over.

The greatest part of all is that my test is at 12:30.

I'm so glad I don't have to wake up early considering I'm usually brain dead at that time.

Another pain is trying to figure out where to go to grad school.

New York, California or Texas. Now, I obviously would choose one of the first two. Unfortunately, the greatest opportunity to work with someone in my field is in Texas. She'd be willing to go to Indonesia with me and set up a field site and everything. Since no one really wants to study in Texas I'd be her sole grad student and would get all her attention. Whereas the one's in NY and Cali I would have to compete for their attention and time with other students.

I just really don't want to go to Texas!

Thanks for the responses, everyone.

When I take the test I might share my results if they aren't too embarrasing.

Now I have to go study!

ugh...its in the middle of nowhere though.

Seriously.

Basically a college town where 90% of the students are Bush lovers.

The school was voted in the most conservative in the country.

My teacher tried to make it sound better by saying 2 of the years (out of who knows how many) would be in Indonesia.

pick the grad program that will make you the most successful student

(the one where you get attention instead of politics)

grad school won't last forever, but the benefits you reap from it very well might

you will also get to go away from all that

(would you have the same oppurtunities in the cool states?)

and your prof clearly understands..

she'll be the one you see the most anyway

(successful grad students here are expected to spend at least 60 hours a week in lab)

listen to symbols.

There are countless stories of successful people who sacrificed a bit of fun for the cause (for lack of a better term). you're in school for a reason, right?

I'll be in that dilemma (sort of) in a few months. A relatively short time in a place where you will be focused on what you love to do will be the best choice you can make.

Think big picture.

I know, I know. You guys are right. I'm just being stubborn.

My Texan prof also told me to consider the universities that offer me the most $$$. It will most likely be the Texan one as well. Even if, say, the TExas univ and NY univ offer me the same amount, that amount will no doubt go farther in TExas than NY!

I still have to get my Chicago prof's opinion on all of this.

I was even considering Duke since they have a great nocturnal primate research center. However, they also only admit about one student a year.

I have a feeling a post in the Saturn's Return thread will be due soon.
