This could easily become a long talked about subject, hell, I could write 4 pages on this subject. Not because I hop myself, atleast not yet, but because I surround myself with true hobo's from time to time, and have gained valuable knowledge on the activity. Someone mentioned Kabar's thread, this is some serious, dedicated, and accurate knowledge, read it, memorize it, and live by it. Also, alot of ''Real hobo's'' give discredit to him, but Duffy Littlejohns book called, ''Hopping freight trains in America'', has alot of good info in it, accurate, and reliable..I forget the reason behind the hatred, and disrespect for him, but the majority of things learned come with trial and error, and any true rail rider will tell you that. Common sense is key, and being alert at all times, will save your life..Those are 2 rules you should always live by, no matter which shape or form you are part of, while around trains....Be safe..and enjoy the ride.

It's different now because everyones freaked out about terrorists on trains after that bomb in spain. Just don't get caught in the yard you paint or you can say bye bye to painting in that yard.

yeh. cos it would be a great idea to blow up a freight train with no passengers on it, in the middle orf nowhere.

dickhead.

A freight train with no passengers maybe.. but plenty of dangerous chemicals or watse of somekind.

Who's the dickhead now? jeez.

As far as hopping advice... Be sober on the train pleeeease.

Anything Kabar says is gold though. Read up. I chilled with him for a day and probably learned 100x what I already knew. The guy is an encyclopedia.

Stay safe.

Email me if you want and I'll get more specific.

Tjere should never be a reason to hop a moving train..Doing so is a totally stupid idea, not to mention an extreme risk of bodily injury..There are plenty of opportunities to catch a ride while a car isnt moving...

you know your shit and i respect you opinion but i have one dilema....theres this one catch out spot, its a crew change and often times ive seen trucks drive up and down a service road paralel to the line...its always a hopper line so youre complelely visible if the truck drives by. i usually chill out in the woods until right when i hear them air up the brakes and then i get on, the train is usually moving then but very slow....what doy ou think? do you have any advice/know of similar situations?

^^^^^^^ Yeah, that doesn't seem like a problem. You obviously have some knowledge, knowing the fact of airing up the brakes/brake test/ pressure reading. It's a standard practice/rule..I believe it's knowing one's limits. Obviously if a train is on the fly, unless you're the 6 milion dollar man, you aren't gonna hop that thing, but remember, as that thing picks up speed, the risk increases..It's a hit or miss thing , you know. You got a bunch of gear, you gotta factor that in, every situation is different, and calls for different measures. Sometimes you get in a situation, you gotta make a choice, But what I'm saying is, if you have the experience, and know your shit, there should never really be a reason to try and hop a train while it is rolling. But as you said, right before, or as they are doing a brake test, or airing up, is a safe bet. Usually beofre that, they have doubled up, or back, and are finally ready to pull..At my spot, I have already seen trains accomplish that, pull up at the signal, and a worker has hopped off, and walked several cars back, for whatever reason, he was obviously checking something. So waiting for the last possible minute, gives you the upper hand in not being spotted, if a similar situation confronts you. There are so many scenarios, possibilities, etc..But I'm out of time, off to work, time to slave for the man. Ride safe, and may every journey be your first.

yo rimshot take a friend with you if anything happens you will be glad they are there one of my good boys had his frame pack strap break hopping a moving car two of us were already on but the weight of his pack twisted his knee when it was lodged in a ladder we ended up draggin him onto the train and sitting with him screaming for 6 hours while this thing went slow as shit then carried him out of the yard to a hospital he had ripped all the ligaments in his knee and had to get reconsturctive surgery done i dont even want to think about what would have happened if we hadnt been there.
