I thought "American Me" was just about the most realistic movie about gangbanging gangstas I ever saw. Especially the prison scenes, although they were way over-dramatized. A second would be "Colors" but it was pretty sentimental, and not too realistic. A few years ago, I had a job in a small city-within-a-city here in Houston, a place called Bellaire. It was a very white, suburban area when I was a kid. Now it has two sections--south of Bellaire Blvd., the rich folks are buying up two or three houses in a row, tearing them down, and building "mini-mansions" with lots of security, automatic gates, automatic roll-up steel garage doors, and designed to be burglary resistant--very few windows on the ground floor, etc. North of Bellaire Blvd., towards the "Gulfton Street Ghetto" is largely newly arrived Mexican and Central American immigrants, some blacks, and lots and lots of gangs: Southwest Cholos, La Vida Loca, Rollin 60's Crips, Hoover Crips and so on. (They all seem to be in the same area, mixed in together, Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings--I don't get that. ) Anyway, I was on my way to work, and up ahead, the traffic slowed down at Renwick. When I got to the light, there's a dead Mexican kid laying in the street. He had come out of the Quik Mart at Renwick and Bellaire, and somebody killed him, at 6:30 in the morning. He was laying half on, half off the esplanade. The cars were driving around the body. Nobody stopped. They should make a movie about that. That's real gang life--somebody kills your ass with a 9mm MAC at six o'clock in the morning when you're on your way to get a Slurpee before school. And nobody except your Mom gives a shit, because you were stupid enough to put on some dumb motherfucking gangster colors. "Scarface" was pure romance.
