    i'm just curious if anyone on here, especially from
    canada, knows the legal ins and outs of job references....
    specifically, is it illegal to give a bad reference?
    can that be considered defamation?

    you mean if youre former boss gives your current one a bad report about you , no . its not illegal and you cant do anything but feel like a jackass bc you gave them the references .

    no,this person is talking about lieing about a reference and them calling and checking if its good.....well i would say yes it is illegal but who is goin to press charges on a lie ...i would just not hire you....your dumb for not putting people you know even if its family at least if they call they will get someone who will back you up,they know you need a job!

    i think if you lie on your app and they find out they jus throw your app away. i mean unless they catch you on some real illegal green card type shit i guess.
