ok, so I've finally decided to make the leap to DSL from my shitty 56k(more like 48k) dialup, and I've got a question that I figure someone here will be able to answer.

I'm using a dedicated phone line for my dialup right now, which I will be getting rid of cause I can just get DSL on top of the other line in the house, but now I need a new jack for that line. I know how to install a new jack from an existing jack, and will be trying to get that done this weekend, but before I do, I'd like to know if this will have any impact on the speed. I know that you need to be within 6ft of the jack or the speed will be horrible, but I'm worried that once I put that new jack in and get hooked up I'll find out that my speeds lick ass cause the signal strength (for lack of a more accurate term) will be worse.

thanks, and any posts telling me to get cable will be ignored, that decision has already been made.

Its just gotten to the point where its almost MORE expensive to stay with dialup instead of DSL. I'm still holding it down for the 56k folks on my site though...filesizes will stay reasonable.

I caught one of your mini-pieces here in Houston yesterday. I was driving 75 though, so I didn't get the car .. but I think the piece was yellow and red.

ADSL uses frequency ranges for transmission higher than those used for voice transmission. This allows the technology to piggyback on top of the existing phone line.

and no i dont believe you have to install the jack within 6 feet of the computer... but try to keep it under ten or else the signal will degrade along the way, maybe thats what your talkin about

your gonna just put the cat 5 wire next a previously installed regular phone line? Take the phone line out first. You cant run them so close to eachother like that, theyll get all fucked up..
