There are different Escolas de Samba (Samba Schools), which are really just crews that assemble all the floats, costumes, fireworks, women, musicians, and they all march down that one strip, it's in one of the pictures, with the bleachers full of people watching and partying. It's part competition between all the different schools and part just all out partying and showing off all the beautiful women and floats and music. It's not just in Rio though, it's all over the country, but in Rio and parts of the north east like Recife, Bahia and Salvador is where the big stuff goes down.
