he climbed out of his second story window and into the moist suburban twilight; down through the bushes and grass that sprayed his bare feet with dew and into the silvery wet street of the moonlight. flickering stars, upper middle-class homes with the light on at their front doors (always), and trees full and robust of the summer arching over his head as he walked slowly in his pajamas, body tingling with life, looking up and around at every step so as not to miss anything on this street he had traversed every day of his life. i could swear i saw his eyes flicker with the stars. about six houses down he saw the light in the window. arms crossed and huddled downward, he reached the soggy front yard strikingly reminiscent of his, scanned the ground for pebbles. in a gesture as memorable for anyone as it is predictable, he tossed a couple of the stones at the window, making a light tick and summoning a black sillouette against the blind of the window. moments later, it opened and revealed a mane of black hair climbing down a ladder conveniently placed next to the window. her eyes really were twinkling stars; open wide and innocent, the white highlights of the moon on her pupils visible through the darkness. no words were said, and they resumed his route walking toward the other end of the street. side by side and close enough that their hips rubbed together every now and then they strolled about as slowly as possible past bushes and mailboxes, admiring the somber blue and black mixing sky frosted with shiny white dots; white worlds burning far away in a life that they would never see. every few moments one would look over and smile at the other, pure pleasure glowing in the eyes, but never at the same time, and neither of them realizing the behavior was mutual.

past where greenbriar ct. came to a dead end there was a huge open space of undeveloped land. onto a path and through a thin layer of trees one came to a long downward slope that wrapped around in a half mile semicircle rimmed at the top by the same thin layer of trees put there to block from view the pit of shattered dry sheets of mud curled upward which was his whole world, his sanctuary when he was still young enough to imagine. they came down through the aspiring forest and into the expanse. their feet were soaked with water and covered with mud as he walked in front, his body stepping sideways and his hand trailing behind him to hold hers, trying to help her down although she didn't need it. it was past midnight, but looking out across the field it all seemed perfectly light and visible against the trees and the sky. further out and past the the would-be forest's open mouth, the skyline was intruded from the left side by the rocky mountains with a huge coal power plant occupying the space between the towering jagged rocks and absolute nothing. the view of its dirty brick smoke stacks outlined against the stars was breathtaking. every hour or so a freight train would roll in or out of the plant's barbed-wire confines, and just as the two reached the ditch running throughh the center of the field a train sounded its horn. a distant chugging could be heard as they climbed down into the ditch and the back up into top of the field's lone tree. between three large branches were nailed a few rickety wooden planks roofed by a canopy of leaves. he built the fort when he was eight years old and only came back on perfect nights like these. for a while they sat up and gazed out at the moon until she lay on her back and after a moment he lay back and rested his head on her stomach. she ran her fingers softly through his black hair and they closed their eyes.

he awoke at that sublime moment when it is still dark out but the edge of the sun is just around the corner, its rays peeking out ever so slightly. he opened his eyes, closed them again and smiled. after a moment he slid over with his arms and kissed her neck and rubbed his cheek against hers.
