Man, talk about embarrassing. "It was the Sixties." That's all I can say. Things seemed a lot more confrontational back then. I guess because they WERE more confrontational. An acquaintance of mine, Bartee Hale, who was a white member of a Marxist-Leninist organization in Houston called the John Brown Revolutionary League (JBRL) was one of the biggest shit-talking bad ass revolutionaries in Houston. I was an anarchist, and I was quite the shit talking revolutionary myself, but not as loud or as bitter as Bartee.

During the Dowling Street Shoot-out, he was shooting at the cops with a M-1 carbine, and was hit in the arm by a police sniper with a .30-'06 rifle (he nearly lost his arm.) 1970, I think. Maybe '71. It was a long time ago. He was laying out in the street, screaming and writhing all around while the cops rained gunfire all around him. By some miracle, he wasn't hit twice.

There was no Black Panther Party in Houston, so far as I am aware. The organization here was called People's Party II. (People's Party One being the Panthers.) The leader of PPII, Carl Hampton, was hit in the stomach trying to save Bartee Hale. In the fusillade of police fire and return fire from JBRL and PPII, some crazy ass hippies drove up in the middle of Dowling Street in a Volkswagen bug and evacuated Hampton to Ben Taub General Hospital. The cops shot all the windows out of the bug, and flattened all the tires, but they drove off weaving on flat tires. Carl bled to death in the VW. I heard his rescuers pulled the plates and abandoned it on the way to the hospital, then called it in, so Carl's body would not be discovered by some poor passer-by.

Bartee managed to crawl between two parked cars riddled with bullet holes and was rescued by several terrified white JBRL members, and black PPII guys. They managed to get a tourniquet on his arm and get him to Ben Taub GH. On the way there, they stopped and picked up a Socialist Party lawyer I knew, a guy named Ben Levy, and took him along to deal with the police. Bartee was completely hysterical and absolutely sure that the cops would kill him in the hospital.

PPII was done for--they had talked a ton of shit about "killing pigs," but when push came to shove, the black community turned their backs on them at Dowling Street, and let the cops shoot them to pieces. There was no riot, no uprising in the black neighborhoods. The police arrested everybody they could lay their hands on. A bunch of people were wounded, but only a few seriously, except for Carl Hampton and Bartee Hale.

JBRL disbanded and scattered (everybody was extremely paranoid back then--Houston was crawling with the KKK, the Nazis and Army Intelligence) and a bunch of them joined the Weatherman faction of SDS.

(sigh) Fuck. What a fucked up situation.

    Fuck that coloring book.

If it was in reverse (i.e. a righteous white coloring book), it wouldn't be so funny anymore huh?

The last page should show Bobby Seale getting killed in a crack deal gone bad in Oakland. Maybe the next-to-the-last-page would be Eldridge Cleaver marketing his fashion designs with a great big padded crotch to simulate a big dick. No lie, this is truth. Makes me want to cry. Shit, I even VOTED for Eldridge Cleaver, no shit. For President. And he wound up trying to sell "codpieces." Fucking SAD, man.
